The Wall is a progressive rock album where it tells a story. Each song acts like a chapter in a broader story. For folks who are not use to Pink Floyd I would recommend Dark Side of the Moon. I think it’s much more accessible for the average person trying to get into them.

A friend of my dad's gave me the "is there anybody out there?" live recording of The Wall and I got hooked on immediately as a teen, so I guess it depends on people. That said I was 15 and had started English classes the previous year so I didn't catch the meaning until later.

This song is one of many that showcases their more straight forward, bluesy, groovy stuff. I am a MASSIVE Pink Floyd fan and have been for ~40yrs, and I have always loved this song. Might be simple, but it is groovy as hell and really fits in much better within the album itself. EDIT: I am sure it has already been mentioned before, but the phonecall at the end is the protagonist of The Wall, Pink, calling from tour in the US back home to his wife in the UK, but a man at the residence keeps hanging up on the operator.

I've never heard of any Pink Floyd fans hating on this song... I'm one of them, and I think it's a banger! Many others have already commented about how The Wall is a concept album, and this song plays a specific role in the progression of its story. There's a few other bangers on this album- Run Like Hell, Another Brick In The Wall Pt. 2, Comfortably Numb, to name a few.

This song is basically a bridge between two songs on the album (which is why it’s probably not been asked for & why it’s start is kinda abrupt.) Fantastic song on one of the best albums ever made in my opinion. Please do much more from THE Wall. And once you have heard most of it, in your own time, a full play through of the whole album give an amazing story! The film is awesome as well 👍

Okay so, the original idea behind the song, and the context within the overall story of "The Wall" are two very different things. In the timeline of the story that takes place on the album, the main character is on tour, and has been building that psychological / emotional wall. The phone call in the song, is him making a call to Britain, to find out that his woman has another guy in the house with her. As a last ditch effort to find some sort of Human connection, he goes out to find a groupie. Needless to say, it doesn't really do any good. We still end up in the song "Comfortably Numb" where he has basically checked out completely.

Young Lust is a great track, good call whoever suggested it. Pink Floyd is obviously known for their mind-bending songs and their introspective lyrics, but their secret sauce is that they are a great rock band and can flat out play - and play funky - when they want to.

The phone call was the rock star (Pink) calling his estranged wife while on tour. She was in bed with another man, the man picks up the phone and hears the operator saying you have a call from the US and he knowing who it is hangs up the phone. Its a difficult album to pick a song at random and work out WTF is going on.

I saw Young Lust pop up a lot in the comments section, I think I put it up there once as well, just because it's a pretty big curve ball for the Pink Floyd sound. I was just a kid in the 80s, so I didn't really know this song, but later I found this album, and when this song came up I was like "wait, wasn't that on the radio back in the day?" I love it. It also does a great job of shifting gears on the album, going from some more real moody stuff in Mother, and Empty Spaces, then banging in with a ridiculously great rock tune.

It’s hard to separate the song from the album because it’s a concept album that is best experienced in its entirety. Especially if it’s your first listen. You’ll understand the meaning at a deeper level, it’s so nuanced.

"The Wall" is a concept album that tells a complete story and the songs need to be listened to in context of the whole album in order to get the full appreciation of them. One song runs into the next (as many Floyd albums do) hence the odd beginning. So the hard rock simplicity of this song is a purposeful contrast to the more conceptual track on this album .. gotta listen to the whole album - or at least read the Wiki about the album to get the context of the story. In the story the phone call at the end is the lead character "Pink" calling home and finding out that his wife is having an affair .. the operator says "a man keeps answering and hanging up"

You have to be careful listening to individual tracks off "The Wall" as many (possibly all) songs transition from one song to the next without a clear break. The Wall is a personal story from Roger Waters' perspective after his father was killed in WWII. Taking individual tracks may or may not make much sense, that's why it's recommended to listen to this in its entirety. Maybe a 2-3 block of songs per review?
@sydhamelin1265
@sydhamelin1265 Год назад
Yeah, or maybe even an album side review, so like In The Flesh? to Mother, or Goodbye Blue Sky to Goodbye Cruel World, just to get that chunk of the story. Hearing "Not sure what that phone call was about" is like....ouch, it's such a painful moment in the album, but out of context you wouldn't get it. "There's a man answering...."

You really need to watch the movie “The Wall” to put these songs into context. It’s a concept album that tells a story of the character Pink. So no song stands in isolation to the rest. I personally hate hearing just a single track from this album. You either listen to the whole album or don’t listen to it at all.

Tracks taken out of the context of an entire album when it comes to Pink Floyd can sound abrupt or not make sense because they are concept albums, e.g., The Wall, Dark Side of the Moon. The whole album is a continuous story. Anyone who truly wants to appreciate Floyd needs to listen to their whole album in one sitting.

I don't think this song is too simple. Since The Wall is a rock opera that deals with a rock artist's depression that leads him to isolate himself from the world, "Young Lust" describes the moment when he has an encounter with a groupie at a party after his concert. The reason why he takes that girl to his hotel room is because he discovered his wife's infidelity (this is what the phone call heard at the end of the song refers to). The next song ("One of my turns") is when the main character of the story loses his temper and destroys the hotel room.

Is it too simple? Maybe, but - along with "In The Flesh" - it's more a pastiche or an homage to 70's rock and roll and the rock and roll lifestyle. It's all part of the concept that is The Wall. That record is a lot of things to a lot of people. And it gives Gilmour an opportunity to just kick ass on the guitar.

The song starts abruptly because The Wall is a Concept album so there is song after song that bleeds into each other. As to the phone call, if you listen close enough, and to the album as an entirety, the story begins with Daddy's flown across the ocean, leaving just a Memory. Listen to the phone call. The operator says, " Mr Floyd for Mrs Floyd," but it's the son who answers and then hangs up. On the second try, the operator says, " This is the United States calling, are we reaching" before the young man hangs up again. I think it's safe to say the Daddy who flew off across the ocean at the beginning is reaching out, but the kid either doesn't understand who it is or more likely is resentful and doesn't want to talk to him. At least this is my take. But I've only listened to the album about an hundred times. Listen to the album as a whole and form your own opinion.

Well, it's part of a concept album. If you watched the movie "The Wall," it would make a lot more sense. This is a character Pink, who's a musician on the road in the US, calling home to England and some guy answers instead of his wife. So, the song itself had the beginnings it had, but it was reworked and woven into this story. One of my favorites by them.

To keep it simple, this is proof they can straight jam when they want to jam. Four on the floor straight to the point. Catchy af.

this album tells a story. If you take the individual songs out of the whole, they often don't make any sense. You should always enjoy this masterpiece completely. Switch on, sit back and listen, from the first to the last minute. Once I saw the movie and the whole thing made sense to me, I haven't been able to listen to the album since then without shedding a tear.
