"Pinocchio" is every bit as terrible as you've heard -- and we wouldn't lie about that sort of thing, because you'd know immediately. Alonso and Christy review the latest live-action remake of a beloved, animated Disney classic. It's playing exclusively on Disney+. Directed by Robert Zemeckis, written by Zemeckis and Chris Weitz. Starring Tom Hanks, Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Cynthia Erivo, Keegan-Michael Key and Luke Evans.

Despite the declining quality of his output in recent years, Robert Zemekis still made two of my favorite movies of all time, Back to the Future and Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and for that I will always be grateful to him

I fear Hanks might be entering his hacky years, relying on disguises and accents. As for Zemeckis, Quinten Tarantino makes a really good argument for stopping at ten films due to directors' output falling off in quality late into their filmographies.

I’ve read that the original idea for Pinocchio, back in the 40s, was to try and make him sort of a smart ass. Walt didn’t like that idea but now why not. Hell, at least it’d be something different

Pinocchio is my favorite animated Disney film of all time and it's a shame that this one seems to have fumbled and I also find it interesting that we're getting 3 Pinocchio films this year. The first was this one with Pauly Shore voicing the titular character with some weird computer animation.

I agree with Alonso. The whole idea is that Pinocchio has to develop a conscience is swept away by the gimmicky story. This movie plays more as an adventure than a heartwarming story of innocence and kid's fairytale movie. There is no sweetness in this movie. Everything is amplified, like the multiple clocks in Toymaker's house. Though the animation is good the characters are not properly developed. And crucially the set up is very rushed. Hanks looks the most authentic and his appearance as the poor and humble toy maker is the best. But his charcter neither gets the screen time or the importance to contribute to the movie. But the idea of a cricket as his conscience is very poorly handled and that character as well as the rest of animal characters who can talk actually seem to run contrary to film's idea that Pinocchio has to be good to turn into a real boy. The makers forgot that in animation, anything goes as boundaries of logic are loose. But in a live action movie your logic has be better. I mean we have cats talking and Muppets talking then doesn't the whole story, the magic behind a wooden toy coming to life loses its impact instantly. There is whole scene where Pinocchio's nose suddenly starts to grow and that comes out of nowhere. Too much of of exposition at the cost of some sweetness and charm this movie sorely lacks, And the story is just not interesting. Only the pleasure island part seems to be of some interest as there themes of right and wrong are referred to. But the rest of story is just not engaging enough to be leave any impact. This modern retelling of Pinocchio strips the original of its very essence and leaves us with a story whose ambition exceeds its grasp. I give this a 5. One of the big disappointments of the year after Jurassic Park.

It’s really sad to see Zemeckis and Hanks resort to such lazy filmmaking in the past few years after creating riveting films for the better part of the first 20 years of their respective careers. Makes me wonder what happened to the both of them?

Zemeckis did those terrible animated movies in the 2000's for some reason and kind of blew his career up. He hasn't recovered from those, and at this point I doubt he ever will (he has tried but I think most of his films have been poorly received by both audiences and critics alike -I mean... Has anyone seen the movie "Allied"? Or that other movie with the dolls?). And about Hanks... I don't think his career has gone anywhere tbh. Sure he's done some weird and sort of unremarkable movies lately, but he's also been giving good performances here and there. I don't love "A beautiful day in the neighborhood" but I think his performance there was good. Same with "The Post", "Saving Mr.Banks" and a bunch of others. Not my favourite movies of his, but I thought he was good in them. And all things considered, that's more than other actors who, like him, may be passed his prime do. Look at people like De Niro for example. Hanks could be doing so much worse than he is.

I believe I left a comment on Dan Murrell's channel to the effect "It wasn't that bad." I think that very very very young children will probably enjoy this movie and never drink root beer again. That poor child actor who voiced Pinocchio, he had to be directed to speak that way. Although I like Tom Hanks, his appearance kept taking me out of the movie. His face looked too young, his makeup/wig well let's just say individuals responsible probably will not be receiving Oscars and he moved like a younger person imitating an older person. Why was the time inside the sea creature so short? Why go to the trouble of what looked like an interesting design and keep that scene so short? I could have used less time with kids breaking things on Pleasure Island. The "collection creatures" on Pleasure Island were interesting, I would love to know their backstory. So why did Disney do it? My guess, while the story is public domain, perhaps some of the imagery (Blue Fairy, Pleasure Island and Figaro) had to be used for trademark/copyright issues? Who knows, probably the reason was to sell more merch (think Occam's razor).

Man, ya know a movie got bad reviews when I'm not interested in watching it without even having to move an inch out of my big comfy chair at home in order to do so! That's how disinterested I am in this at this point. I have to admit, it started with hearing Tom Hanks do whatever that accent is in the trailer while saying the Star Light, Start Bright poem. Just his delivery in those two lines made me roll my eyes. Come ON, Disney!!!! Hopefully Del Toro will get it better! Although I wish he wasn't even doing it, to be honest.

I must confess, I hung out with a character designer on this 6 years ago.... and it was ROUGH TO WORK ON. Just grueling he said, a very uninspired mess of micromanagement. He basically said "it was uninspired and needed time off from it." the GDT stop motion one was announced in 2009 having a script by Nick Cave.... so that's nuts to begin with, even though Pinocchio seems to be a production that all film directors just have difficulty with.
