I didn't actually know that 'slang' referred to a person's accent in Filipino-English, because when I go back to the Philippines every couple of years, my titas say that I talk with too much slang, but I didn't know they were talking about my Australian accent 😂

Great video! How about "duster" (for house dress) and "ref" (for refrigerator) for Pinoy English words.

joyce lea cañares lol. maybe I was just used to know the meaning and difference of "slang" and "accent" (learning it from an English class). So, by knowing their true meanings and differences, I found myself ending to be irritated when people used the word "slang" to mean "accent". That's also a reason why I said so. hehe :)

Agree. Filipinos in the Philippines actually connotes "diction" when "slang" is mentioned.

i think rather than accent, thwang is a more appropriate word.

Davlorito hahaha in bisaya we say "Patya ang suga" - "patya" means "to kill" from the national root word "patay" which means kill "suga" means "light". Literally it is translated as "Kill the lights" the heck with that!! Haha

We have two official languages, one is Filipino which is our national language and the other is English as a second or third language. Our English is totally based from American English because we were once under the U.S. and we use American English spellings, but it developed into our own cultural context, ending up with American English words having a different meaning in our English communication in the country. This is a result of language alongside cultural development in our country. Aside from Filipino (standardized version of Tagalog) and English (American English in Philippine context), we also have Spanish and Arabic as sub-official languages, then we have Chinese Mandarin, other Chinese languages, Japanese or Nihonggo, and Korean as minority foreign languages from foreign and mixed race nationals. We also have German, Malaysian, Indonesian, Italian, French, and Hindi from other foreign nationals, and over a 100 of different ethnic/regional/provincial/indigenous separated but linked languages from the different places in the country. :)

Lol my initials are C.R too and I don't get offended by it, so I don't think you should too. I used the term "C.R" appropriately as Mikey pointed it out that it meant "comfort room", which is synonymous for "toilet". If your initials are C.R and coincides with the meaning for toilet, deal with it. Don't make a big deal out of something as small as "my name's initials have the same initials as comfort room" to a complete stranger on the internet.

Same word for opening the door or window. It's like that in Polish too.

That's the difference when you grow up in the U.S you become curious of your countrymen's culture and you learn more beyond the average pinoy thinking. You think as an open-minded Filipinos because of the American influence you have.

"Pa more" is redundant. Because "pa" in Tagalog already means "more" Kain pa = eat more Tulog pa = sleep more "Pa" also give sarcastic tone to a sentence if you pronounce it paaah (long 'a' sound) Kain pa = eat more (that's why you're getting fat) Tulog pa = sleep more (that's why you're lazy; that's why you're always late!) If you add "more" after "pa" it will give more emphasis on its sarcasm.

"based" is also sometimes a Philippine English word which means "workplace", "study place" or "birthplace".

+RingSight91 I mean the English word "base" in our Philippine cultural context means also "workplace", "study place" or "birth place" when we're using them in conversations...... and yeah we know what "base" mean and that it is a noun, not a verb...but it's just because it's similar sounding word in Filipino is a verb that we ended up mistranslating the word and creating a new context or meaning....the noun became a verb...... but then we use it in our own culture...it developed into what we call Philippine English word with its own meaning, so it's not erroneously used but just adapted into a culture to mean another meaning......we don't even said Americans use it as a verb or not, it's just we do.....it became not American, not British, not Australian in meaning........ Because the Filipino word for "assigned" or "posted" or "base of operation" is also "base" (read as bah-seh) or the "to be" form ""binase" (read as bee-nah-seh) and is derived from a Spanish word like in the Spanish phrase "Base Militar" (read as Bah-seh Mee-lee-tar) which we still use in calling former US military bases and our country's own military bases...... So again from an English noun, it became a verb in our culture due to a Flipino word which is a verb.....we Filipinos had this language thing that's not part of English which is making a noun into a verb. :) Base (n. English) = Base (read as bah-seh) (n. Filipino) = Base/Binase (v. Filipino) Shopping (n.English) = Mag-shopping (to go and do shopping) (v. Filipino) Ramp (n. English) = Rampa/Rumampa (to walk on ramp or do the runway walk/catwalk) (v. Filipino) Hospital (n. English) = Ospital (n. Filipino) = Na-ospital (hospitalized/confined) (v. Filipino) Hover board (n. English) = Hover board (n. Filipino borrowed word) = Humover board (to ride on or use a hover board) (v. Filipino) Swimming (n. English) = Sumwimming (to swim in Taglish pidgin) (v. Filipino) We also use the noun "swimming" and its Filipinized verb "sumwimming" even though we have a word for 'swim' which is "langoy", 'to swim' which is "lumangoy", and 'swimming' which is "paglangoy" ....................................................................... We use every English or Spanish-derived nouns then turn them into a verb....'cause that's what we do with Filipino nouns too..... So what we used to do with Filipino words in noun to verb construction, we also do with English and Spanish-derived words or loanwords. I guess you should learn to speak Filipino in our own context including our slangs, contextual languages, and pidgins or mixed-languages, and also to understand well our language and how we form or use nouns and verbs, then right there you'll know what I mean. Sorry, my ideas are all over the place. Hopefully, you'll still be able to understand my point. hehe :) Good day.

I'm kinda late but I think it has to do with him trying to reach out for the wider Filipino viewers and let the non-Filipino viewers hear what typical Filipino sounds like. That switch in f and p is very common to us. It sounds weird to be honest cause most of the people that have this tendency to switch sounds aren't as fluent as he is. Another thing I can think of is how some Filipino hate it when a kabayan is trying to adopt a foreign accent (slang). They think it's maarte and pasosyal.

It sounds unnatural... Talk in your accent.

Mel Bornales Personally, I speak Filipino fluently and start to just get used to the accent and I mean I can speak the English accent properly but getting used to the accent drew me away from it
