MATERIALS: mug, normal sharpie, oil based paint sharpie
OPTIONAL: stickers/stencils
*I got the oil based sharpie at a local craft store (local to Houston -it's not a chain) so I don't know what stores it is available in. Couldn't find it at Walmart or Target or Michael's (but that might just be because my Michael's is confusing). BASICALLY - best chance of finding one is ordering online!
**Also -- for reference, the Target mug is by the brand THRESHOLD. The dollar store mug did not have a brand.
________________________________
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Clean the surface of your mug
2. Draw on any design.
3. Place mugs in oven BEFORE turning it on. Set oven to 425 Fahrenheit for 30 minutes
4. Turn off oven & let it cool completely before removing the mugs.
5. Test by hand washing or running through the machine.
Enjoy!
JUST FYI: It really stinks while you're baking the mugs. Maybe this is just something that I experienced, but none of the articles I read about this project mentioned the smell. It's not too bad, but is noticeable.
________________________________
AFTER FILMING: I went back a third time with more soap and water. The P & E Mugs (Normal sharpie) continued to fade further. The J & C mugs (special sharpie) are still in great condition. I'll keep providing updates on the J & C mugs over time for anyone who is interested in long-term durability.
THE VERDICT: The idea that you can just use items that you probably already own (normal sharpie + plain mug) to create this is kind of false. If you're willing to search for the oil based paint sharpie, this can work. That said, I'm sure there are a ton of different sharpie/mug combinations (different mugs have different quality glazes) so I'm sure there are other ways to make this work. Let me know if you've tried this/what has or hasn't worked for you down below!

Nice video. I'm making these right now as bridesmaids gifts so of course I want to make sure they're legit and last forever. I got my white mugs at Walmart. Walmart didn't have the oil-based sharpies so I went to Michael's and I asked one of the girls there about this project and she said the oil-based sharpie doesn't work as well as an actual ceramic oil-based paint marker and she said lots of people have come in saying even the oil-based sharpie didn't hold up in the long run. So I got the ceramic oil-based paint markers instead. The brand is "DecoArt" and on the package it says they're meant for glass, tile, and glazed ceramics (aka mugs). Another thing I just thought of tonight is if there's a way to protect the mug even more by spraying a clear glossy acrylic sealant over it and sure enough I did find an article on Google about this. Hope this helps someone! I think these steps will ensure success.

Hi Carla! may you please tell me what ''clear glossy acrylic sealant'' did you use? I see your comment is from 4 yrs ago but you made that for bridesmaids gifts so it was special moment and maybe you still remember haha. I'm starting a little project and I wanna make sure my art lasts! I would appreciate it! :)

Just a few weeks ago I started designing my own mugs and in my research the oil based sharpies were used the most, were most successful in lasting longer, able to be put in the dishwasher and microwave. This was a great tutorial. It's a blast!

I'm actually glad i watched this before i started making my own because i was about to make the DIY sharpie mug as a christmas gift and now that i see the normal sharpie failed i need to get the oil based one. Thanks for doing this video it helped me a lot :)

Thank you for changing the most important variables of this experiment (the mugs and the sharpies) because most people just try it once, with one mug type and one sharpie type, then either give it a pass or fail. You, my friend, have stuck to the scientific method and did the world much good. You also gave it a full test (doing both dishwasher washing and handwash). My only question now is how long do the oil-based sharpie mugs hold after MULTIPLE washes. Guess that's something I'll have to find out :)

I really like this video and the whole idea behind the Pinterest Truth or Fail! One thing I thought I'd mention though is even the oil-based sharpies don't hold up in the long run. Mine, too, held up for the first couple rounds through the dishwasher, but by the fifth or sixth time, the ink was starting to fade. Not entirely sure about handwashing, but still, I wouldn't recommend this project as a gift to anyone else.

I was skeptical about this project too. My mom wanted to do this project as Christmas gifts for all her siblings (she has 10 of them) and now I know that she'll need the oil based Sharpie instead of the regular Sharpies. Thank you so much for this video!

Thanks for sharing this! This was EXACTLY what I wanted to know. I did some regular Sharpie decorated mugs last year but realized they weren't holding up well so I didn't give them out as gifts. I now have the oil based Sharpies so I can give it another go this year. I also like that you tried out different mugs because I was wondering about that, too. Thanks again.

@ying520
@ying520 8 лет назад
Don't worry, just avoid car/jet washes and use a cloth or something soft instead because in the dishwasher I suppose everything's submerged in water (idk because I don't have one) and probably put under extreme pressure like a jet wash. Or you could search for some type of sealer that could seal in your design. I'm not sure if there's such thing though :)

guys.. they are more permanent then regular sharpies, so they will be stored, usually the same way spray paint is. behind the counter or locked up. Walmart has them open in store and theyre off brand back by the craft/paint/sewing items. joanns has them up front only. Michaels can have them locked up with the copic/instax cams.

You have no idea how much I appreciate this video... I am just about to start crafting for real (to sell painted mugs) and I had just seen another video on this topic which she had used:: Deco Color Foil Marker and (same brand) glass paint for ceramics... The oil based pens were better... I always bake my cups at 350* for 30 min. Thank YOU so much for sharing this video/tutorial... great job.

The only DIY article I’ve read, before I found this video, was from popsugar.com. In addition to recommending the oil-based marker (though I agree-Why not get the DecorArt ones designed for such a purpose?), she also lists in her instruction steps letting the ink dry for several hours before putting the mugs in the oven. Does this step matter? Who knows? But just wanted to add that.

Since I didn't test the difference b/w 1 and 2 layers, I'm not exactly sure. I'd imagine that it would still work BUT I always like making sure that something will be durable and since it didn't take longer than a minute or two to go over the original design, I just did it to be sure.

I can't guarantee that because I haven't tried a ton of different mugs, but yes - that seems to be the case. (After doing a lot of research on this, it seems that cheaper mugs are the best to use because they have less of a glaze on them so it's easier for the design to penetrate the surface. That might be getting too technical but basically the point is -- get a cheap mug!)
