Are you surprised? We live in a time when the gallon sunflower oil is priced higher than a gallone of gas, which already sits on an all time high...its also the days that let you sell a kidney or your new born for a pound of flour... Could be very soon, that 800$ entry level mixers are our least pressing matters to deal with. In history books they call it interesting times...lets you think of boring times with nostalgia^^
@@ChesterPerry187 It was indeed, been using DVS for like 15 years, so vinyl prices are so far back in my life that is not in the equation anymore.... TBF my first serato SL3 DVS box was indeed about 700$+ bucks and my old mixer another 800$, so yeah the price is kind of fair I guess.
@@Presbiter some chips are not being produced anymore so company are having to buy up B grade batches of chips for even more than the older better chips. i can't see this being a thing forever but i bet company's will be happy to keep the prices high forever, even when chips are being produced again.
Cross fader Cue ??? all this are killing the DJ Industry..you make people get lazy day by day just like the Sync button. Now evwryone wants to jump into Djing because there is a Sync button.
The way people dj nowadays, I’m curious when autonomous dj’s will take over. Same, due to mumble rap, there’ll be algorithm-created rap tracks…maybe vocal tracks could be made using machine learning. My point is that these Bella and whistles may take the soul out of the music and make it full of effects.
i'm not sure if USB-C is the right way going forward because USB-B is a much larger connector that's won't break as easily and can't be pulled out as easily on average. i love USB-C for everything that isn't DJ hardware but for exactly that there will have to be some sort of locking mechanism. there's no way we'll have CDJs in the future connected with USB-C cables that are out there now.
@@Lenfant_soleil that would be for pro-dj link, but for HID you always need some sort of USB connection. i don't think HID works via Ethernet alone, but i think from the 2000NXS2 onwards you only need to connect one device (CDJ or mixer) of a Pro DJ Link network via USB to get HID.
I don't get it. It's an €800 mixer with cut-off curve on the cross-fader but nothing on the upfaders? We're talking 1990's options. Something so simple for creative DJs missed. I'm looking for something to superceed my Z2 mixer at a reasonable price. I guess this aint it 😞
You serato DJ's are missing the one important thing that Numark doesn't allow you to do, and that's using the effects when spinning Vinyl. That's huge if you're a Vinyl DJ that occasionally uses serato. And, the faders on the Numark don't stand a chance for those that like to cut. And sorry to say, Numark isn't what they used to be in the 90's. Pioneer is keeping up with DJ's, and listening to what they want. So if your only complaint is the price, you're looking for cheap, not quality.
Can we get a 'software' effect for the "Backspin" and "Vinyl Brake"?? As an old school dj from the late 80s and early 90s, that was our favorite way to transition from one song to the next. Not always available in all cases and they do sound good when parameters are set correctly.
Thanks for this! The fact that you can use the Serato FX while playing vinyl is what really grabs me. There’s just no 2-channel mixer currently on the market with onboard FX for playing vinyl, except the really pricey ones, so this may well be an acceptable compromise.
I'm not an effects dj but a few years ago I added a pair reloop neon to my sets (2 × Numark ndx500's + Akai AMX & my dvs setup as well) . I started using Serato fx's because that was all I had, and I really liked them, the echo out in particular. Maybe I use it too much but I can't seem to stop 😆. Almost every transition I'm using echo out. Anyway I've upgraded to a Denon X1850 + SC5000m set I really miss my post fader serato fx's 😔 Even in controller mode using a ddj-xp2 the serato fx's aren't post fader. Now I know for all you serious fx's djs I've heard it all, "get a rmx 1000, denon fx are garbage, Serato fx's are trash, pioneer fx's are the greatest thing since sliced bread" Yada, Yada, yada!!!!!! like I said I'm not a big fx's dj, serato fx's give me all I need.
S11 user, the build-in fx do their job but I mainly use twist echo, shutter & similar to that. All the rest are meh, maybe I need to spend more time tweaking with them but I do LOVE a simple effective fx without over complicating the setup. Also, I never used the scratch cutter tool, I get why its their but seems like a useless feature to me. Serato fx need a refresh PLEASE!
right this what we've come to... im slowly getting back to djing after about 10 years and I am looking forward buying actual records again. Looking for a mixer for a bit of scratching and also mixing. Could this mixer be the good one as im not really going to use nothing but vinyl records? or should i go straight to thriftshop looking for old ecler/vestax pmc mixer for my setup? help a guy out here... also shiiiet?! 800$ for a intermediate tyoe mixer nowdays?! I remember Vestax mixers pmc-05 being about 550$ and that was pushing it a bit
A little detail: this mixer works in external mix mode. Numark Scratch works in internal mix mode when the switch is set to "PC", and the crossfader cuts are so soft because Serato DJ can't do it better unfortunately (we AMX users know those kind of cuts...) That's important for anyone who wants sharp cuts with Serato
i like a bit of echo and it can get you out of trouble when you cant beat mix or chop out.I dont use lots of effects but that and cue points are the two features i use the most
My two cents would be for using Hip Hop, R&B, Reggae, Pop & sub genres: Echo & Reverb. House (Soulful, Deep, Nuyorican & Classics): Echo, Reverb, Flanger & Phaser. Do agree on Serato FX about getting new improved and saving configuration til this day still don't understand why they don't have the save setting so I prefer to use internal FX.
Since I play mostly House, Disco, and Techno, I don't use FX that often. For certain tracks, I would throw in an Echo. or delay using the wet pass filter. I also would use the loop while blending tracks.
Im a turntablist and i find the same i dont use most of them , i use echo , looper mostly and then i have reloop elite and combo filter with the fx fader can be used to scratch and then a couple of other effects i have used when recording the rest - fucking useless
Would it have killed Pioneer to give you the standard 8 pads versus just 4? I think if they added the additional 4 pads it would have been a home run which is standard equipment these days.
Very interesting review! As a Z2 user, all I can see is that when it comes to affordable DVS battle mixers, mine still has the best value for money 😁 (as well as the Numark Scratch mixer for Serato users).
As someone who launched the Numark Scratch (before covid), this mixer still does not capture the low end market for the money. With Numark Scratch for $500 you get all of this (DJ essentials) with Serato DJ Pro. The extra $300 with no onboard efx is a complete waste of design. No DJ ever wanted a USB C power, nobody asked for that. So as a former Numark employee, Pioneer DJ “hedge fund” engineers (yes men) please try again.
Well, I agree the price is so high, but about the waste of design... the advantages against the Numark Scratch are: - Magvel Fader Pro (it seems some Mini Innofader units had too much non-fixable dead space for crabs an other types of scratches, it should had included a Mini Innofader Pro at least) - no soft cuts when using Serato (Numark Scratch works in internal mix mode when the switch is set to PC in a channel, it's a problem Serato never fixed in its internal mix) - more pads functionality (access to 5-8, and other ones like scratch bank) - Post-crossfader FX even with analog sources (the Numark Scratch has post-crossfader FX from and for Serato and nothing FX for analog sources but the filter, I personally love to use echo sometimes when cutting) - portable option (because the USB power source, I'm sure portablists will use it in the streets) - Aux in (if you use two turntables with the Numark Scratch you can't plug in a smartphone with a looper without unpluging one turntable... really, Numark, really?) In my opinion, the Numark Scratch went too far to be low cost, and the S5 too high to be "hobbyst". It's a pity there isn't a half way option between them.
@@AprendeScratching I agree on the post fader efx on analog for Numark Scratch. But the point here for the entry level is to give them what they paid for. So essentially like learning how to ride a bike you just need to pedal and brake. For us more experienced guys/gals we want more so we upgrade to the next level. You are right about the market place as there is still opportunity for a mixer in the $500 - $800. With maybe onboard efx and Innofader pro.
Agreed. To add, its only $100-200 less than the s7, which has onboard effects, and 8 pads per channel. Not sure why anyone would choose this at a $900 price point.
@@OT83 That's true, I think this mixer can't fit the entry level. I guess it fits the _kind-of-wealthy_ hobbyst people 😂 But I think there is another option at the entry level. Although I've read bad comments about the Magvel Fader (the "little" brother), I own a DJM-250MK2 and... it does the job. Ok, it's true: has no pads, no FX controls (not even post-crossfader FX), but you can learn to cut with it, at least with my unit, with a pretty decent dead space (about 1 mm) and a nice cut. Rekordbox instead of Serato, but I feel its DVS works really nice (after re-callibrating it in the Rekordbox setup, before that it sucks a little bit with slow drags). Unless it happens to be that nowadays other Magvel Fader units go wrong or something, for 350$/€ I think it's a good mixer for entry level. Perhaps with a big lack of controls, that's right. Same for the S3, but with Serato and +100~140$/€ more 😁 And Mixars seems to be dead, so I think it's dangerous to get some of their remaining Duos from the shops.
@@bvee9202 Hope they'll push the price lower later if they don't sell them... but it's so close to the S7 (10 in-10 out audio interface, for example), I don't know how much they could do it...
I'm on Traktor and I use exclusively software FX. Tried the DJM ones and the RMX-1000 and they sound imho trash like the mixers themselves. Going back to what I use, I have per side a delay, delay t3 and beatmasher, in this order, on one FX rack, and on the second per side I use the Xone filter emulation with a custom mapping on my X1 to switch from insert to postfader, plus the mixer FX on the S4 MK3, namely Reverb, Barber Pole, Crush and I tend to switch between Noise and Time Gate. I'm interested to experiment with pedals but that would be a nightmare to get on recordings.
Traktor’s FX have always been superb. I love the Tape Delay, Dubfire-style. The way they do the racks and the routing options are awesome. Other developers could certainly learn from Native Instruments on FX!
@@Mojaxx I don't know if you are aware of the public beta of Traktor 3.6 but they want to include Izotope Ozone's maximizer compressor on the master limiter as an option, with dial-in properties like threshold and gain. I'm really curious what will they do now that they are in partnership with Izotope
Lovely looking mixer. I think for £800 a slightly better IO and 8 hot cues is a minimum. Send return would be nice also. Would make the serato effects less of a problem. Should unlock serato DVS at that price range as well.
Mo great presentation as always, me personally I don't use effect that much, unless I'm playing roots or dub, and the odd house tune' the reverse, Echo is quite good when you the right amount Milli seconds, so sorry to change the subject when will Pioneer bring out Mac daddy 4 track 19" inch rack with all the bells and whistles I do like the layout of DJ DJM-S11 and has a lot of great features and lot of engineering that went into that building it'and it's mixer that can't reckoned with I think they should bring the family, in other words the 10",19" give people chance to choose what is best for them, so would it be fair to say that big mixer are not for the upcoming DJ of today and if, someone could bring that back would nice to see. I know it would very pricey, and it's due an upgrade and is long overdue you have reviewed some excellent P. O. W. E. R. H. O. U. S. E mixer in past and present. I hope one day that will come and something to look forward to. Bless you 🙏🏾😇🎚️🎚️🎛️🎚️🎚️🎛️
Saving custom effects settings has been missing in Traktor, too. If you switch from single mode to 3 effects, the standard settings won't work for me - they sound terrible. On a side note: With Native Instruments' purchase of iZotope, how likely is it they will upgrade a competing product's (Serato's) effects?
I am using the Xone 96 with my SC6000Ms and desperately miss my Traktor effects. I am using the send and return to my old Korg Zero 4 which is in a cupboard underneath my decks. It works really well. I just select echo or delay and I can dial in the BPM and pretty much leave it if I am playing similar tempo stuff. Whoever is the first to make a rock solid effects unit that is well built and sounds incredible will be very popular. I have thought about the eventide H9 but its a big ticket item for a compromise
If you miss your Traktor effects, why don't you route them to the mixer? Something I like from Traktor is it allows to route its FX outside the software with any hardware. I don't know if the Xone:96 has send/return in its buit-in sound card, but you can use and external one and connect them via the jacks for send-return, right?
@@AprendeScratching yeas it has send and returns, two pairs to be more exact, one assignable for recording. It’s a great idea, plus the Denon’s from what I played with behave very similarly with Traktor
They need to expand the beatslicer on the pads if you use that right it turns your mixer into an mpc you can drum using it if you set para to 1/2 beat , make sure your bpm range is set double time then hit the slicer so its on blue mode and drum away it gives a much better soumd than regular drumming
As far as FX, for some reason I prefer DELAY over ECHO. I don’t even know the difference. Repeater forever. That built-in scratch thing on the S5 looks like a problem. How do you learn or practice if it does it for you? Thanks Jax. You dun rule👊🏿
The difference is what happens when you close the fader , with delay if you activate and close fader it cuts all sound with echo you still get the echo sounds , im the mix either is the same but for scratching you need to use echo
Great stuff, your reviews are on point. I have a S9 so no need to try to get this. The S9 is still a great go-to mixer. And I got mine used for 900 with a case. Depends on what you need. This mixer is great for people who wants to use this with a reloop portable turntable with phase A nice portable setup. This is WAY better then the Numark scratch. So the price jump is worth it.
I’m giving you the credit for Pioneer making the choice to add color back to their products. I would not be surprised if we start seeing the MUCH needed return of color and personality to do DJ gear going forward. My hope is they listen and make the switch to USB C across the board, as USB B is dated. At bare minimum they should ship USB B to USB C cables with their gear lol.
Trying to compare to numark scratch is hilarious, it's literally 30 dollars shy of being double the price of the scratch down under 1370 vs 700 dollars.... 8 pads and hardware efx would be better
At this point I'm almost Pioneer hardware effects only and thus a S9 or S7/11 mixer kinda guy or the SRT/Rev7 controllers. About 40% of the time 1/2 or 1/4 echo and 60% of the time the default 50% reverb. I actually thoroughly disliked the software effects from almost day one and last used the Serato effects with my SL1/TTM56 combo.
I don’t normally post negative comments but I have to say that in trying to be a bit different in the look of this one, Pioneer made some odd choices. The cross fader reverse and curve controls should be dedicated buttons/switches in the same way they are on the s3. They took up a load of redundant space on the front of the mixer with the tension adjust ‘inner workings’ when they could have put the CF reverse and curve controls there instead. The scratch cutter is a beginner feature but it’s a mid-range price point and with a high quality crossfader (Magvel pro not standard Magvel) like the S7/9/11, I’m not sure who it’s aimed at. If it’s potential Numark Scratch users, then you’re paying an extra £300. Yes, there are more features but I’m not convinced it’s worth the extra. The faceplate colour? Not a fan - it just cheapens the look imo. Black should at least be an option. I think the s3, s7 and s11 were all appropriately priced and obvious upgrades from each other but the s5 feels a weird mix of some upgrades but some odd choices that make it feel and look more budget than it should be. Nope, not for me this one.
Thanks for the in-depth review Mojaxx. Eh, one question. I wás looking into the Mixars Quattro, but this one is newer.. Do I need Serato compatible turntables to be able to control them via the S5 in Serato or can I just use Standon one's connected to the S5 in Serato ? I already have the Pro version for my current DJ controller.
Uhm… cute thing with the bus powered stuff… what if you have that venue setup with an S5 and you have to switch over?? You won’t notice how it’s powered but the mixer will power cycle… to me sounds stupid 😂😅

Has anyone else ever used the LFO on the Xone 92 filter? I'm a big fan, it makes it feel like you are playing a synth. Sadly it's not on the Xone 96 haha.
So did we forget about the S3?? that had serato... why did they discontinue that... was actually pioneers cheapest serato s series mixer to date am i wrong?
hot cue fader thing was called fader start up to this point and i dont know why they trying to rename it, and works on many other serato mixers( 72 for sure)
it seems Pioneer has become a follower and not a leader, not that is bad to follow market trends but seems strange after being a leader for so many years.
I didn’t start using FX until I was able to experience hardware FX. Now I’m hooked on using hardware FX. This mixer looks interesting but the lack of hardware FX and only 4 pads stood me from getting it.
Nice review. I play a lot of 60s garage on vinyl and really like using flanger and phaser over the tracks, echo is excellent, vinyl brake is also useful
