After refinishing my HPM-100's it was finally time to bring them in the house to see how they look and sound. They did not disappoint. I have $220 invested in the speakers and about $30 in refinishing supplies. It was well worth the effort to bring these cabinets back to life. I have not done a recap on these speakers as I wanted to hear how they sounded as-is. Overall, I am very pleased with the sound of them with my SX-780. I worked on these for about 10 days total with about 2-3 hours in sanding and about 30-45 minutes each day applying the linseed oil. Please comment below and let me know what you think. I will post some links to my other videos below of the process. Thanks

I remember hearing the hpm 100 speakers in the audio stores back in the day. Great sounding and those hpm tweeters sounded crisp and had great dispersion because of the shape. That line of Pioneer SX receivers were the best looking ever made. Wish i bought a few of the Pioneer SX 1980 receivers back then. Those are now being sold for a fortune.

Congrats, your speakers turned out very nice, both cosmetically, and sound-wise ! Over the years, I built an entire system of 1970s-era silver-faced Pioneer equipment, including an SX-1250 receiver, SG-9500 EQ, RT-1020L reel-to-reel, RT-707 R2R, CT-F1250 cassette deck, PL-71, PL-50A, PL-530 turntables, and HPM-100 speakers.

May 2020 I found a single one. I was offered a pair with midrange missing or broken or something at $450 and a single at $350. When i picked the single out of the e waste bin i found 4 grills. A scrapper took other 3 and tore the wooofers up and scrapped them for the baskets?? also found a minty sx 828 they had left behind. I believe some of the CS series speaker had a better build but idk. The two tone grills with the 10" fB cone sound great also imo. Harder to find JBL in Canada then the Pioneer imo.

I had a complete Pioneer stereo system I bought while stationed in Germany what I considered the signature pieces what is the hpm-100 full range equalizer in a dynamic range processor one day I came home from work and my little one had the grills off the speakers and was putting holes in the subwoofers. I gave my system away.

Of course, it does not do much good to hear these wonderful speakers on my Personal Computer or iPhone . I have these speakers in very good condition that have not been used since I moved into our home 35-years ago. Probably sell soon since we are downsizing. These speakers are about 60-pounds each! Thanks.

It's "The West Side" by Phil Collins, off of the album "Hello, I Must Be Going". I found the song by accident a couple of years ago, actually. I had owned this CD for years but never really listened to the whole thing in it's entirety. I decided to listen to all of the tracks and was surprised by how much I like this song, in particular. As I get older, I appreciate horns in music more than I did when I was younger.

Hallo. Please help me. I have Pioneer A9 vintige ump. I think 1981 but not sure. What do you think about this combination? A9 and HPM 100. I ask you because i want this speakers man!!
@TheKeymaster316
@TheKeymaster316 5 лет назад
Dusan, that would be a great combination. My SX-780 does great with the HPM's and the 780 is only rated at 45 watts per channel. Your A9 is listed at 110 watts per channel, so it would be a phenomenal combination.

Go to a vintage shop and listen to some real speakers. Much better kit available for less. Try Polk Audio SDA's OR something similar. Hpm s are tiresome to listen to for long. Better deal and 1000 times better sounding. No comparison. Warning: after listening to real speakers you'll never use your pioneers again. Ever.

Vintage audio is a great hobby. I got into it in the early 2000s. I have a bedroom full of vintage amps, receivers, speakers, well, you get the picture. Back then you could buy vintage gear real cheap. Bought most of it at our local flea market and the Goodwill store. I picked up a pair of nice HPM-100s and a 1080 receiver in perfect shape for forty dollars about twelve years ago. The old stuff is getting harder to find, but it's still out there. Bought a few off EBAY back then pretty cheap also. Bought a Sansui 9090 for 75 bucks and a QRX 5500 for fifty dollars. Hard to beat the vintage sound,clean, clear, tight and powerful. Good luck on your quest for the best stereo gear ever made.

El Sansui 9090 es un sintoamplificador espectacular, de lo mejor de la marca!!!! y me imagino el combo que debe hacer con los HPM-100!! Lo felicito!!!

If you love hpm's, then you've never heard good speakers. Mid-fi at best. Same with the receivers. If you think pioneer receiver's are great, you need to get out more. Mid-fi selling high due to nostalgia. For the same money you could buy killer gear.

I wouldn't argue with you on any of those accounts. But I don't like my Pioneer setup because I think it's top of the line or that it sounds superior. I like it because I grew up listening to my dad's SX-980 with his HPM-100's, which he still owns. For me, a lot of what I enjoy about my setup is that it takes me back to a much simpler time when the music was great and I didn't have a worry in the world. I got these 100's in pretty rough shape but was able to sand them down and recap the crossovers, as well as replace some blown drivers. In my little 12'x12' room, it sounds like heaven to me. 😉

@@TheKeymaster316 I have a pair of hpm’s btw. Like I said and you verified, nostalgia drives most sales rather than musicality. I still have them, not hooked up, but only to set a preamp on because there’s no room in the rack. I’ll be selling them soon when I get another rack. They just aren’t crisp and the bass is inferior. Btw, I Owned a Pioneer that I bought new back in 1977 so I understand the nostalgia aspect and I restore and sell vintage gear so I’m glad people pay too much for them. Currently I’m running a SAE dual monoblock from 1977. Built in the USA. Nostalgia, power and good sound quality.

@TheKeymaster316 2 года назад
@@keithb6717 yes sir, it's for sure 100% nostalgia for me. I've since added some 2nd gen HPM-60's to the setup. Now those are true sleepers and they impress me more than the 100's. You can feed these speakers the onions and they just keep going. I have been very impressed with them and I never listen to this setup now without all 4 of these speakers playing at the same time. Maybe I'll do a follow-up video soon to give everyone an update. But I understand your point and would never argue that this setup is superior or hi-fidelity. It's almost overkill for this little room I'm in. Anything bigger in here would really be a waste.

Go listen to some good speakers. I have some and compared to my Polk Audio SDA's the pioneers are tireing to listen to. About the same price used. Of course those Pioneer receivers aren't good enough to run sda's so you'd need a real amp too.

Cant believe you put heavy receiver on top of turntable
@TheKeymaster316
@TheKeymaster316 6 лет назад
The 780 isn't heavy at all, really. I wouldn't have put it there if it was too much for the turntable. As you can imagine, I can't use the turntable in this configuration due to the speakers being on the same cabinet. That's why the receiver is on top of the turntable, because It's not in use right now. Wondering if I can rig up a shelf on the wall for the turntable to keep the vibrations from affecting the sound.
@martyjewell5683
@martyjewell5683 6 лет назад
Looks like you pack a lotta stuff in that room. I also am a hifi buff. The SX-780 is a fine mid-powered receiver. I used a SX-650 from 1977 till 1979 before trading up. Do I see a PL-512 or 514 turntable under the 780?? I have a PL-518 purchased on 10-6-1979 and still in use. I'd like to know if the EQ is a SG-9500 and why you didn't use/show it in this "test". The Hpm-100's were great rock speakers in the tradition of Cerwin Vega's, JBL (Century) 100's and Altec's. But like those models they weren't accurate. Not really suited for classical music reproduction. HPM stands for High Polymer Molecular film. They were the best speakers made by Pioneer to date. I've heard them and the HPM-200's on many occasions and do like them. But better sound is available for the money from companies like; Ohm Acoustics, EPI, Polk, Genesis, Boston Acoustics and Infinity Systems. Nice video and a fine system.
@TheKeymaster316
@TheKeymaster316 6 лет назад
Yes sir, it's a PL-514. With the HPM-100's on the same cabinet, I haven't used it here recently. I just brought the 780 into this room recently to appease my wife and removed it from our master bedroom. I actually need to shuffle some stuff off of this cabinet so it all fits properly. The EQ is actually a Realistic from around the same era as the SG-9500. My dad had one when I was a kid and they're cheaper to come by than the Pioneer EQ's. I don't really feel the need to use the EQ with the HPM's, much like my dad felt later on with his SX-980 and HPM-100's. With the HPM's having high and mid controls on the speakers themselves, I just adjust them accordingly. They can be really bright unless you turn them down. I'd like to get my turntable in use again but need to figure out how to keep it separated from the speaker vibrations.
@TheKeymaster316
@TheKeymaster316 6 лет назад
I have an SX-737 as well, very sweet receiver and actually heavier than the 780 by what feels like 10 pounds. They really built them solid back in the day. Ironically, I have some Genesis speakers hooked to it and it sounds fantastic. The Genesis won't get as deep as the HPM's but they sound phenomenal for their size.
@TheKeymaster316

They are the Genesis Model 10's. Love the sound of these. Got them for about 20 bucks from a local gal. Bottoms of the cabinets were slightly water-damaged but not really bad and the woofers needed to be refoamed. Bought a set of surrounds and I've been using them every since. I didn't have high expectations of these speakers and then I heard them. Really nice sound out a small, 2-way speaker. Here's a little video I made of them right after I got the new surrounds installed. They sound much better in person. ;-) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QxFQje-dpU4.html

Marty Jewell I disagree with you regarding that a speaker that is more expensive than a expensive speaker has necessarily better sound. Im not trying to say that Pioneer is the best brand but im just saying that they aren't brad compared to more expensive brands such as Bowers and Wilkins. Audio snoobs tends to overestimating the sound quality of these brands just because they are very expensive while underestimating other brands that is less expensive.

I remember when Infinity first came out with those almost see-through polyproplene woofers. The store was playing a Richard Pryor comedy album which was strange but he sounded like he was right in the room. The EPI 100 8" 2 way speakers are classics. Boston speakers are good but i thought that the tall, wide, flat 4 or 5 inch deep speaker designed to be placed up against the wall they made was a fail. I wasn't impressed with the sound they produced. I know OHM speakers are great and saw their walsh design ones in stores but never heard them. They still make them today and are considered some of the best speakers available but cost a pretty penny.

I had a set of HPM 100's given to me by the original owner's wife (family friend) and I foolishly sold them about 8 years ago because they were so huge and cumbersome and didn't know any better that they were this good. What is crazy was that they were mostly MINT condition (sans a minor water stain on the top of one). After I sold the HPM's about 2 years later I got into the old SXxx50 line of receivers and regretted selling the perfectly matched HPM's.
