ANOTHER Pioneer! This started out as a video that I was not going to post because there wasn't much going on. Then, as I replaced the capacitors and made some modifications to the loudness circuit, this restore became more interesting. I think this amp will become the new amp for my main system. It sounds great! Hopefully, this will do it for Pioneer videos for a while! Enjoy the short video.

Who will get tired of watching videos of vintage equipment being restored ? Certainly not me . Keep them coming !

The big bonus to doing this, you get to cherry pick the good ones and keep them, learning more every video, this is a perfect example of a good amp that got better after the restore, well worth the watch, you are my go to guy when I'm bored and want to learn more about electronics.

Amazing how well made these receivers are, and how nicely they clean up.

+1. .. O man. .. The family stereo in the early to mid 1970's was none other than a Pioneer SA 8500 Integrated amplifier, a Dual 1229 turntable w/Shure V cartridge, a Tandberg tuner, driving Advent large loudspeakers. .. Wow ,,,, memory lane.

I bought mine used recently, serviced by an old Bang & Olufsen technician. As far as I can see, there are no leaking capacitors and it simply sounds amazing. Much better than many of the modern day, high end amps, like Naim, I have owned, which always made me wanting fore more. Not with this one. Amazing!

Nice unit, I'm rocking a Sansui AU-517 with the TU-S33 tuner paired with 200watt Quasar three way speakers. I found mine at the dump. it powered up first try and has been working since i got it in may.

Many years ago I got rid of a Pioneer SA8500 because of the sound. I opted for the Pioneer SA9100 instead. It's interesting that within the same company the different models would have different sounds. I've had the same experience with the receivers where I didn't like their sound also and always kept away from them also. My favorites are the Pioneer SA9100 and also paired with the tune, TX9100, though servicing them is difficult because of their layout, so I hear. It's interesting seeing you do the fix.

I've got one of these, been working since the day I bought it July 30, 1976. SN WA3904976M. That makes it 47.5 years old. I did have to replace a noisy output driver transistor about 25 years ago. Getting ready to do the caps. Only bad feature are the board interconnects, wire wrapped hard to work with, but solid.

Great video! Very useful. Found a set with the accompanying tuner for a reasonable price. Might just buy it. The manual says the depth of the amp is 34,5 cm. Is that from the front most dial/button to the back or just the chassis?

Well thx for the video but it made me sad, I had one of these, also the tuner that went with it. I sold them when I lost my job and needed money. I also had a Pioneer Super Tuner car radio, I think it was probably the best car radio ever made.

Few quick question: First: your created jumpers... how are they connected together? shorted (+/-) or ((+/+) and {-/-))? quick sketch of schematic? Second: restoring my new-old sa-8500 and the base 50hz switch shaft was bent sideways by shipper without compensation... do you have one you can part with or know where to get the switch or shaft, or do you know how to effectively repair the snapped off 1/2 of the prong? Finally: thank you for your video and insight into the loudness upgrade.

Got one of these on my bench. Think I'll try the loudness mod and replace the electrolytic caps. From what I seen, you did replace the main reservoir caps. Did you pull them and check the esr on them?

Wondering if you thought about the certain transistors that could be a problem at some point.. or if this unit is free of them ? I'm starting a Pioneer amp and concerned about if i should or should not go there..and then adjust bias of course.

@andreadalleaste525 3 года назад
Hi Tony, thanks for your video, just one question, after recap is necessary to adjust bias? thanks
@xraytonyb

I usually check bias and offset anytime I service one of these, just because I'm already in there and it's very easy to do.

Where do you get those crispy clear large schematics from ?? By the way I love all your videos. I'd like to learn how to use those diagnostic equipment some day and perhaps purchase my own. I love vintage audio gear.
@xraytonyb
@xraytonyb 7 лет назад
Thanks for the question and kind comments! For the schematics, I usually start by opening the schematic in an app such as Acrobat, Photoshop, etc. and I try to tough them up. I'm not a graphic artist, so I don't go too crazy. I then save them as a PDF. I have a printer at home that can print 11x17" pages. For the large "bedsheet" prints, I go to an office supply store, such as Staples and have them printed on large-format paper. The prints cost less than a dollar.

Do you clean your volume, balance controls with the Deoxit? I have heard the deoxit has lube in it that can ruin the carbon in the volume, balance and fader controls. Very nice video.
@xraytonyb
@xraytonyb 7 лет назад
Tom, There are several versions of DeOxIt out there. For example, the D5 contains only 5% of the chemical and the rest is cleaner that evaporates. The D100 has 100% of the chemical and no cleaner. It should be used very sparingly to avoid damage to the carbon. Faderlube is another DeOxIt product designed for faders/ sliders and pots. It also comes in 5% and 100% versions. The thing to avoid is contact cleaners such as the CRC electra-motiv and similar products. They are chemical contact cleaners and they will disolve the carbon right out of the pot! They sell this stuff in the same are as the safer cotrol cleaners, so it's easy to confuse the two. Be sure to read the label. Thanks for watching!
@jackjohnson9989
@jackjohnson9989 6 лет назад
This business of contact cleaners and lubes etc must be one of the most confusing in the audio/video hobby and repair business. The labels and the ads are for the most part, misleading. I've seen many of these switches and pots at a friend's shop when gear was brought in for service. Almost inveriably they had been treated with products that were supposed to be 'safe'. But the products appeared to make things worse. What should really be done with these controls to clean them internally if that is at all possible, and to lubricate them - which I gather is distinct from 'cleaning' ?

@lastweekslightning 4 года назад
Would you be willing to tell us what parts you used? I have one of these and would love to recap it and clean it up. I tested it tonight and she still works, but the pots are gritty and I feel like she could open up (sound wise) a great deal with new components.

I downloaded the service manual from HI-Fi Engine with all the schematics. Now I have I problem. When I turn on the tone, I loose the right channel. I searched the net and all they said is too replace all caps on the EQ broad. I can't see any bulged or leaky caps on the broad. I would hate to replace caps that don't need to be changed. So were do I look next? I did a mV test on A speakers and the left is 21.8mV which is proper, the right is 85.4mV which is way off. So were do I go from here? Thanks in advance.
@TheFRiNgEguitars
@TheFRiNgEguitars 6 лет назад
The tone defeat switch contacts need cleaning. I recommend contact cleaner, the stuff from Radio Shack would be fine. Do not use deoxit, as the contacts are probably not oxidized (never introduce any acidic cleaning product unless you have to) The switches are serviceable, as the contacts can be manually micro-polished, but must be de-soldered from the board to do so.

Hi! Do you only have to pull the knobs to remove them?
@ICanHasSmash
@ICanHasSmash 5 лет назад
Check around the knob, sometimes there's a little hole with a tiny screw in it, usually flathead or hex, undo it and pull. If there is no screw, they should just pull off. Most knobs, especially smaller ones have no screws.

Notice you replaced some capacitors with audio (gold) ones, but left the main power caps and seems lots of silver caps look original. You have any guidance on which should be gold, should you replace main caps and/or if 18k update to 15k/22k (audio or power type) since 18k are not available. Like to have more details on this and doing the alignment. I have a SA-9500.

My advice would be to watch other people on videos, read books, and buy some amps cheap at a flea market, etc. and try to repair it. If you fix it, great. If you don't, you got an education. Just don't spend too much at first! Nothing beats experience. Best of luck!!

Doesn't matter what he paid for it, what does matter is the quality of work that went into a restored amp, and what it is worth on the market. Stereo equipment from this era was very high quality. Time and material is not cheap, and experience is worth something!
