Pioneer SX- 1000TD I fully serviced this 50+ old receiver.

I was 2 weeks with this 1971 Pioneer receiver....change most caps, I will show you how every cap values where off by double digits, I had issues with trim pot..
FM signal strength meter was not working, installed light/lamp kit . reset the Bias...etc

Joe has been kind enough to let me use this receiver, while working on my SX-780. I have to say a great sounding unit, especially given that it was made in 1971. I would not trade it for my 780, but a nice piece of gear in it's own right.

I worked on some of these which had a nuvistor in the FM front end and others had an FET front end. Also ran across a number marketed under the Allied brand from Allied Radio in Chicago.

Excellant video. I have two SX1000TWs, #1 bought by my Brother, Steve while on R&R from Viet Nam, #2 bought off ebay a year ago, (it might need serviceing, has a bit of noise/hum when Vol turned up) my Brother's has had the power output transistors short a couple times, I've replaced them. But it could use a full service. Also the filter switches are broken, not toggling. THANKS!

I acquired an sx 1000tw from an estate. Sad story. Ladies husband, a volunteer fire chief, died in an mva returning from a call around 1990. I believe it was his and his age makes me believe he bought it while he was in the service. Just a guess though.

6:37 High capacitance should not be a problem as long as ESR is low. I guess capacitors are good.

I have the -TW version of this, I'm guessing W is for wood since it's in a wood case. Passed along to me from the original owner, it's never been opened and still works. Also it has strange speaker connectors that need adapters.

Those pots are a source of trouble even on slightly later models. Some were ceramic and looked indestructible but would be flaky or worse, go completely open and send the outputs into runaway. Those are nice receivers and I think you will be happy with it.

Agree. I've repaired two 1000TW's, a 770, two 990's, four 1500TD's, and a 2500. FOUR of nine of them had one shorted bias pot that had blown out the outputs. Replacing them is SOP in this style of Pioneers

The tolerance range on electrolytic caps back then was +80% and -20% Still not wrong to replace though.

He didn't say much when testing them and I was wondering. Shouldn't tolerence be on the cap?

@@thewayidoit8895 On American caps, tolerance was sometimes printed on the cap. Don't think I've seen capacitance tolerance printed on Japanese caps, just capacitance, often temperature.

Higher capacitance won't be a bad thing as long as ESR is low. I think that capacitors may have replaced with lower quality ones.

I'm having the same trouble right now with my father's 50yo xonex quadraphonic , it has 4 of those 2 legged trimmers for dc offset and they just aren't adjustable anymore. All it says on them is 50k so I'm not sure what to replace them with, and there's not a single two legged type made anymore that I can see

Hi....if you look closer to your trimmer pots, you'll notice they have 3legs...maybe the middle leg is connected to one on the other 2,legs.... Check that out buddy
