This episode should be entitled..."Feeling Lucky ?" This entire series was a brilliant display of analysis, fabrication, patience and repair/re-work. A "must watch" for anyone even thinking about repair/restoration of classic audio equipment.

I'm not here for flashy camera work Tony, it's all just fine by me, the content is what matters! This is a great series, thank you!

This video should be entitled...."Felling Lucky ?" In all seriousness... This series was a brilliant display of analysis, fabrication, patience, troubleshooting and re-work/repair techniques.

Thanks for sharing Tony. I have done worse over the years as an Electrical Technician. I am retired I used to work for Pfizer here in UK. We all make mistakes I was lucky enough to work with some amazing engineers who all had been in the same boat at some time or other so we could all rely on each other. I did my apprenticeship here in UK coal mines which was regarded here as one of the best apprenticeships you could get at the time. I think the honesty and humour in your videos is why I and many others like your videos. We can a relate to you. All the best. Mike

On an industrial maintenance team, we always asked, “What changed?” Frequently what changed was the work we had done. In this case you changed nearly everything, so the question doesn’t have good application.

The cat probably interrupted your transistor assembly. Blame the cat!

@Tony I would very much like a series on your dream stereo circuit... To be clear, not your dream OEM stereo. This would be a drawing and discussion of the various sections of the stereo, using the methods that you think are best... Examples: Your favorite/best in-rush circuit, your favorite/best speaker protect circuit, your favorite/best bias circuit... You get the idea. You would not even have to necessarily draw the schematic... You might just say a current mirror goes here... A Pi filter goes here... Etc. You could just make it a flow chart style drawing, if a full schematic would be too much work. You could discuss what method you chose and why. This would be for a boutique stereo, not curtailed by the limits of production, or cost. I understand that, for any one given portion of the overall stereo, there might be great debate as to what is the best method. I am not interested in that debate. I am interested in what you (personally) would do and why. The creme de la creme, for me, would be you creating the actual schematics and you fully building it out. Maybe we could get a GoFundMe(?) going (though I don't know about such things) to pay for it, for you. I would not be surprised to learn that you intend to do such, but that it will have to wait until you retire from your company. I hope it is sooner, than later. Cheers.

Nice no-panic troubleshooting. I guess that speaker protect isn’t the greatest. Even though it sensed that high offset, it kept fluttering the relay from on to off. Probably would still damage a speaker. 😲

I noticed that as well. With the correct power supply voltages and no current limiting bulb, it seems to work properly, but I will have to test it further.

I can't even begin to guess how many of those beautiful old buggers have been across my benches over the years. Got a real soft spot for them. I wish you all good health folks.

Very nice Tony ! I did one receiver only so far but went right through it.. a sx 737. I plugged it in on dim bulb after every board ( and twice actually, once after transistors and once after caps) so i'd only have to suspect the last part I worked on. But then again..i'm a newbie :- ) So I was worried LoL ! Good outcome tho' !

LOL, I've done the same thing, getting those bases tied together instead of the emitters. Now I test each one I create before installing them, instead of trusting my work off hand. Love the white heat shrink idea. Keep up the great work!

One of these or a 1980 would be a dream find, but that's never going to happen for a poor guy like me.

Gonna be a beautiful peace of history. I'm looking forward to the bench test. And don't sweat the little things. knowone is perfect, and like you said, if that diff input pair was the only thing wrong, you did fantastic.

I had the same exact problem with the replacement dual packages on my first SX-1280. Very easy to get mixed up putting together those custom dual packages.

Great show. Would like to buy a sx-1280 or sx-1980. Hard to find. Would never give up my sx-880 bought new in 1979

14:00 Here you measure that there's more than 8 volts over the emitter- base junctions of the transistors, and that should be a big red warning flag. You can't have that much voltage across base-emitter of a transistor. It's should be 0.7 or less, so eighter their both open, or as you found out later, It's in backwords. Easy mistake to make.

Looks like you did not recap the tuner board. I am prepairing to rebuild a Kenwood KR 7600, should I not do the tuner board?

Was the relay chatter when it was in dc offset protect, due to the the current limit bulb?
@Duckariffic

...yea...the actual chatter of the relay bothered me (in a curious way)...
