This 1998 Pioneer XC-L7 Stereo CD Receiver won't work without one crucial system component which I did not find along with it. So let's take it apart and see how it works and what interesting parts can be salvaged!

That LM3886 was a surprise, maybe the best chip there is out there.
@DrCassette
@DrCassette 3 года назад
Indeed it's a very good chip. In this Pioneer system, the subwoofer had better sound quality than the main stereo speakers...

At the Arcade Museum Seligenstadt Germany there is a Namco Alpine Ski (huge machine with rear projection) that has a Quad amp using LM3886 one of which was shorted. AFAIK all Namco Rear projection games use this. Btw. the speakers had shorted coils, slowly killing the chips.

The recycling center here is just like Fort Knox, you can't take anything. But at least there are the e-waste collection bins in the shops, in some place you can check them out without being annoyed by the security dudes.
@Peter_Yachymczyk
@Peter_Yachymczyk 3 года назад
I don't get that myself the biggest form if recycling is REUSE if they really cared about anything other then money probably (scrap metal and precisous metals in electronic component's) they would let you take stuff. I had a friend at one many years ago he let me take stuff under the condition I would return the stuff I could not get to work and/or the rest of stuff I scavenged for parts, this was a nice "system" we had but unfortunately he passed some years ago and I don't get along with the new management. Fun while it lasted though got some good stuff.
@DrCassette
@DrCassette 3 года назад
In Germany, the definition of the word "recycling" actually is re-using the materials an item is made from, but not the item itself. But this may be different in the English language.
@BilisNegra
@BilisNegra 3 года назад
@@DrCassette Of course it's the same in the English language, Spanish, Italian, French, or whatever. It's only stupid rules that are stopping people that would gladly take home stuff that others dump.
@Peter_Yachymczyk
@Peter_Yachymczyk 3 года назад
@@DrCassette I get that as well but if it is a simple issue it can be fixed as well (less energy used then simply melting it down to recycle the various pieces). When I had my friend he got quite a bit of goodies from people who passed and the family just tossed all of their "useless junk" in a big dumpster I got a nice Pioneer SX-1250 like this, it was 100% working just a bit of cosmetic damaged when it got thrown (literally) in a big dumpster. This was over 20 years ago I don't have it anymore I gave it to another friends teenage son who was into real audio and not his discman!

I got one of these systems for free last year minus the cassette deck. Works perfect and just needs the cable to connect the subwoofer

I have this full system, I bought it second hand some years ago from a local carboot sale for very little money!, The CD player has just packed in working, It's been linked to my pc for listening to music online so can use the CD drive on my pc, I've always like it but i've worked in a foundry for over 40 years and the tinnitus is louder than the amplifier!!☺ Enjoyed watching this very interesting video though i'm not a techie or electronics engineer!, many thanks 👍😎

I had the exact one gifted to me from my grandma like 10 years ago, it had a really fancy external display and an external tape deck. The CD drive didnt work and the cassette desk only worked if you hit it a bit from the top. Never got to fixxing it i was way too young.

I recently got this cd player from my dad and it works rather well for 25 year old gear. Some of my CDs work perfectly fine but some, including neat ones, glitch very hard (glitches from the start to a random track or time, then gets to the end or the record). It probably has something to do with the lazer lense from the info i've gathered. I'm not really familiar with electronics, but already did things that needed me to partially disassemble and reassemble a guitar amp for example. Despite me being inexperienced with such devices, should I try disassembling the thing to clean the lense a bit and see if it works? Thanks for the video by the way, couldnt hope for a better one on such a specific piece.
@DrCassette
@DrCassette 3 месяца назад
Make sure you unplug the unit before removing any screws. Cleaning the lens of the laser is certainly worth a try.

I have one of these with the small control section and all 3 speakers. The sub-woofer sounds great. I came here hoping to find out how to fix the cd player. Everything else works really well. Perhaps the cd player has the same problem as the one on the video I was hoping the replacement of a cog or some such mechanical part would get things going. Although the video was enjoyable I am still searching for a solution to my problem. This is

Very late use of the old Pioneer logo, it was changed to the new one that same year 1998, presumably later in the year.

I was surprised to find the LM3886 powering the 8" bass driver's in my 3 way powered studio monitors from Fostex! The chip amplifiers used for the midrange and tweeter were shielded and I wasn't willing to disturb it so I didn't get to find out what they were but judging by the shape of them, they were something different.... There should be a lot of amplifier boards, possibly in kit form on eBay that you could use to make use of that IC if you chose to go that path. I'm sure that John audio tech has covered the LM3886 extensively on his channel and possibly even suggested some improvements over and above the eBay kit's... Might be worth investigating... I have salvaged plenty STK'S and other chip amplifiers like the lm3886 and TDA2030A's, they are very common but they also have a great sound to them. It would be interesting to see what you end up doing with this... I was wondering about the idea of using that power supply and amplifier in it's original case as just a power amplifier but replacing the front fascia with a piece of thicker aluminium with a power button and possibly even level meters? Apart from the face modification, all the hard work is already done by pioneer! The case is a good size and shape and actually looks pretty good! Saves you time from having to build one from scratch! And saves from sending stuff to the tip...
@DrCassette
@DrCassette 3 года назад
The case is mostly made from plastic, and it is badly scratched in some places. I have much better salvaged metal cases that I can use for DIY projects... But I have done projects like the one you suggested in the past, take an existing stereo system and only keep the power amplifier section. For example: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4ddupHJHYag.html

Why would you want to do that, if there is an amplifier built right into the unit?

Are you going to try cleaning that "House" CD-R using toothpaste with cotton balls? I tried that on a few of my CDs and it seems to work for me. That's something I've learned from the RU-vid videos.
@DrCassette
@DrCassette 3 года назад
I have not even tried playing that House CD-R yet, if there is any interesting music on it that I want, I will have to see what I can do if any scratches stop it from playing properly. Of course these days a song really only needs to play for long enough so that one of these apps can identify it, once you have the artist and name you can find almost anything in the internet...

@@Escylon Ok thanks I did not think US as the US market always get the "gimped" versions of the product EX: I bought an Onkyo TX-NR609 about 10 years ago (already failed what junk replaced with a Denon) anyway the manual says RDS except for the US market how rude! Also no silver versions have been released in the US for many years for most (but no all) consumer electronics
@DrCassette
@DrCassette 3 года назад
RDS is a standard developed in Europe. It has since been adapted in other places around the world, however in the US the standard has some different specifications and is called RBDS. So the reason why the US version had no RDS is because it simply wouldn't work there.
@Peter_Yachymczyk
@Peter_Yachymczyk 3 года назад
@@DrCassette Yes I do know the US standard is RBDS (Radio Broadcast Data System vs RDS Radio Data System) I thought they were almost the same, I guess not? Although most US market radios just say "RDS" the GM Class II databus radios (the early 2000's units the newer ones looked the same but no RDS logo) I don't know if you have a similar system to the US's HD Radio (IBOC) I like it (I have quite a few of them!) Although the company is evil Ibiquity they want to much money for royalties and whatnot so a lot of the good ones have long since been discontinued I love my Integra TUN-3.7 I got it with the HD Radio card!

This system sometimes sells for as low as 20 EURO? Too bad quite possibly they only pop up occasionally, I presume. Quite disappointing to you to find this is of negligible value, but I desperately want to grab one even at twice as much!
