The tone arm here is adjusted too high. The needle is supposed to be only 8mm from the record's surface in the UP position. Not very far at all. You can see that your tone arm base is pushed far down against the rails by the white line calibration lines on the right hand side of the base. The long (middle) one should be close to ... the middle. And line up with the turntable housing. From the front.
I have just acquired a PL L1000A, apparently it's the later version with a few upgrades, I'll take a vid and place it here on yt in the next few days.....weight is 25 lbs, lovely piece of vintage audio....
