Pipe-organ give-away to good home!
(See, also, • Pipe-Organ give-away 2... )
This organ is in a small chapel, now closed, on the Isle of Man (of TT Motorcycle fame) off the west coast of the UK.
It was built in the 1880s by H.W. Hewitt, who always used second-hand parts, so it must be well over 130 years old.
The stops are: Open Diapason, Clarabella, Gamba, Flute 4', Principal 4' (from middle C) Octave Coupler, Pedal Coupler, Pedal Bourdon (12 pipes, only).
It plays perfectly well, and a suitable person or organisation is welcome to take it down as it stands. It is still in good order, and was regularly maintained and tuned until the chapel closed in 2014.
.
No other church on the Isle of Man seems to want this little instrument, which is why it is being offered, here. (One Church did seem to be interested, but in the end some unenlightened members of the congregation persuaded the others that their entertainment electronic organ, with its offset keyboards and 13 stick pedals, was a better bet, despite the two organists of the church being very much in favour of a change!)
.
This recording was made after the organ had stood in an unheated, unused building for over two years.
.
Whilst the instrument is working just as it always did, with no mechanical faults and could be removed and set up, just as it stands, now, the organ-builder recommends that it is overhauled when taken down. This would cover a general cleaning, new tuning slides and any minor pipe repairs and (most significantly) an overhaul of the soundboard. The cost of this, including dismantling and re-assembly (but not including travelling and transportation costs off the Isle of Man) is likely to be around £4,000.00.
.
Leave a comment, if you would like more information on the availability of this instrument, but act quickly, as the chapel has been sold and the organ must be removed.

In an unexpected turn of events, the organ has been given to a church in the area of Seville, in Spain, where it is to be renovated and set up by a group who are seeking to re-introduce the sung liturgy into the Catholic services, there. (Presumably, they have become sick of the 'guitar and bongo-drum' approach!) It seems that quite a number of churches there have 'lost' their pipe-organs over the years, and this group is working to reverse that trend.

The clearable flute would be excellent for accompanying Gregorian Chant. The Diapason chorus is a good tone for the accompaniment of congregational hymn-singing. The casework is rather attractive, and I imagine that being a single-manual instrument, it would not be too imposing to someone venturing into organ music for the first time as long as they have good keyboard skills. Only a shame that I am not in a position to get such an instrument imported to Australia!

Very true. Can you believe that a church would refuse this as a gift, preferring to keep their pub-electronic?

Those small pipe organs like this one have soul. I would prefer to have 8-stop real pipe organ than 40-stop digital Johannus in my parish.
@Offshoreorganbuilder
@Offshoreorganbuilder 7 лет назад
I agree. The difference between the digital and the real thing is that the digital *reminds* you (sometimes very forcibly) of the pipe-organ, but no more. They all sound like a large organ, heard at a distance. There is no immediacy, no life. The sound can be loud enough, but it is a *dead* sound.

A friend of mine once referred to a digital/electronic organ as an "Appliance." Like a refrigerator or washing machine... :-)

Yes, absolutely, and i would prefer really good live acoustics. Some churches have ruined their magnificent pipe organ with carpet, padded pews, and acoustical tiles. I think i would prefer the imitation organ with live acoustics over a pipe organ in dead acoustics.

There is something really quite nice about these small 1800's organs. They're just so English. My local church has a small two manual organ built by J.E. Dodd in the 1890's. It's a really nice instrument, and wonderful example of an English parish church organ (even if it is in Australia...).
@Offshoreorganbuilder

Yes, I agree. They do have a real role in service accompaniment. And the point is ... they LAST (down the decades) unlike some 'substitute' instruments we could think of.

It's a shame that it could not have found a place in a church there. Oh dear... So sad. It sounds beautiful! I do understand the logistics of island living. I lived on a barrier island here with no bridges, stores, mail, etc. so, it is cost plus on everything and added work. I do hope it finds a good home. I'm sure you will do everything that you can in order to ensure this. I always enjoy your videos.

@Offshoreorganbuilder
@Offshoreorganbuilder 8 лет назад
+bellowphone Thanks for your comment on the playing. Alas, I cannot play (and certainly not improvise) like this. The very talented organist here is not credited, as he wished to remain anonymous. He did tell me, though, that it was this instrument, to which he was introduced as a boy, which sparked his love of the organ. So he has a personal connection with it. You are correct, of course, about the action noise. You don't get *that* with an electronic!

Up close, it looks like a small one manual reed organ, but from further away, you can see that it is a real pipe organ, just a small, positive one manual one. Anyhow, it sounds really good, and that church that has a spinet organ would be missing out by not accepting this organ!

+Reagan Reese You put it where it can be used! I have had a pipe-organ in my home for over 30 years, and it is played most days. This instrument should, for preference, be in a small church, where it can be useful, and failing that, in someone's large room. But you are correct, it *is* awesome!

Interesting, and thanks for the information. My friend, the late Bob Kitchener, ran the Johannesburg branch for a number of years, and had some amusing/alarming tales to tell about life under apartheid. (The policeman speaking: "Do you have a gun, Mr. Kitchener?" "No, I don't have a gun." "You should get a gun. You see someone outside, you shoot him, and we'll throw him in for you" (!). This was at a time when it was legal to shoot an intruder, but only if he was inside your house.)

What a beautiful instrument. Shame I didn't come across this video earlier, I might have tried to convince my school to get it (alongside the electronic one we've got, it's not a bad piece of kit). What's the first tune played?
@Offshoreorganbuilder
@Offshoreorganbuilder 8 лет назад
The music you hear is all improvisation, so once heard, it's gone! The difference in sound between this organ and an electronic is that the electronic sound is 'dead,' that's the only way I can describe it.
@szymongorczynski7621
@szymongorczynski7621 8 лет назад
Aw what a shame, I'll try making a score based off what I see in this video cause I'm in love with this tune! You are indeed right in saying that the sound is, well, dead but it's better than nothing! It also gives you the advantage of having a rather unorthodox volume control which stops me getting scolded by an angry Frenchman for disturbing his French lessons. It's not a bad machine for practice (2 manual + solo organ) but it's not really a concert beast. Are you Peter Jones by any chance?

@Jorge_Organero1684
@Jorge_Organero1684 8 лет назад
Super! A really nice intruments. Two questions only: a) The other nothes from the 16' pedal come from the manual stopped bass? b) The gamba and clarabella share the stopped bass on the first twelve notes or it really has a separate stopknob?
@Offshoreorganbuilder
@Offshoreorganbuilder 8 лет назад
Jorge Luis Martinez Solis The 16' pedal stop has 12 pipes only. After that, you have to rely on the pedal/manual coupler. The Gamba and Clarabella share the Stopped Bass which is controlled by a separate stop knob. This is quite common in organs of this age.
@Jorge_Organero1684
@Jorge_Organero1684 8 лет назад
Wow :O
@Offshoreorganbuilder
@Offshoreorganbuilder 8 лет назад
Jorge Luis Martinez Solis You might be interested to see this video, of an even older organ. This has a similar specification, this time with 18 pedal pipes. The Stopt Bass does not have a separate stop-head. It is permanently ON. (Why would anyone want to put it OFF in ordinary service playing?) The organ was rebuilt from a totally unplayable wreck, then offered, free of charge, to small local churches. The first two refused it (without seeing it!) They both have electronics. Can you believe it? The third church came to the workshop, saw and heard it and said, "Thanks very much!" Of course. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4DTjm009gFU.html

Offshoreorganbuilder I'm thinking of building a small (maybe 3 octave) 1 rank positive pipe organ. Where can I get used Clarabellas cheap?
@Offshoreorganbuilder
@Offshoreorganbuilder 7 лет назад
No. 85 Merlin Firstly, your best stop for this is a good Stopt Diapason or Gedact, because you will be able to play it for hours without listening fatigue, which does not apply to the usual Clarabella. Secondly, the best source for pipes is either a redundant organ, or any organ-builder, most of whom have boxes of second-hand pipes.

Offshoreorganbuilder Listening fatigue?
@Offshoreorganbuilder
@Offshoreorganbuilder 7 лет назад
No. 85 Merlin Imagine playing an Open Diapason, and nothing else. After 15 mins. you would have listening fatigue. (Can't stand it any longer! Look it up on the internet.) The same happens with an electronic organ. The brain tires of the sound. The simple harmonic structure of a set of stopped pipes means that you can listen to them for long periods and still find the sound attractive. The pipes must be of good quality, however.
