It's amazing how many different flavors and uses there can be from just tobacco, Snuff, chewing tobacco, cigarettes, dipping tobacco all with their own differences and sub differences within themselves. Yeah you should have left the mouth end less cut and more of its conical shape, that will help the end hold together while smoking it.
Personally I much prefer smoking Cigars over Pipes. If you like very strong english blends maybe try some "My Father" cigars they are usually Medium/Fullbody or just Full-bodied. But if you're just starting out, maybe start with some Connecticut wrapper cigars from Aj Fernandez. Aj Fernandez have very high quality on their cigars and they're pretty cheap.
