Samuel Gawith's "Best Brown Flake" is a medium-bodied straight Virginia made with flue-cured Zimbabwe pressed and cut into flakes.
From gawithhoggarth.co.uk: "The pressed and baked Virginias give this medium strength blend a sweet flavour."

FVF is BBF just more fermented. Try a wider bowl and cutting it into cubes helps a little bit, too. Some bowls I really enjoyed because of the very sweet hazlenut-flavours. Greets from Germany!

My last box came with verrrry wet flakes and I'm having a hard time drying them enough. Had more luck with tins in the past. As for the taste, you described very well. I prefer these bready virginias, but in BBF I can taste a bit of citrus too. A pleasant experience all the way -- if you can tame it successfully. Another great review Bradley, thank you. ✌🏻️

Thanks for the review. I agree that all the SG blends need to be dried to a point where they are dry to the touch no clumping. Any moisture in their blends make them temperamental.

Now that you've reviewed Best Brown Flake and Full Virginia Flake, I think you can continue the SG straight Virginias range with Golden Glow. As always, excellent review! :)

Always Funny and Wonderful. I found Best Brown to be very consistent and always rich in its flavour for me. You mentioned Full Virginia, but I found that I could not taste not a thing from it: it was just like sucking straight moist air for me, no flavour at all. In this, we seem to be opposite tastewise. But it goes to show that everyone, either by nature or nurture, experiences the world differently. And that is a wonderful thing.

Smoking a bowl now while watching and also know Full Virginia Flake well. I agree, you're review is spot on for me too. Also, you're right, both would burn your tongue to the point of a butcher's block if not careful.

Full Virginia is a nic bomb! It had me throwing up 🤢 but I liked the flavour. Best Brown (for which I have some on the way) sounds like a subdued version of FV, which to me sounds great! Ps I am a nic lightweight.

My favorite way of drying BBF is to rub it out and fill a pipe right away and then let a pipe sit on a shelf for a day or two. Somehow it yields best results to me.

I really like this stuff a lot. I've had good luck with packing it slightly more loose than normal. Good from start to finish! But seriously, don't taunt this stuff cause it'll bite! Hey, love your channel. Keep it up man!

Well, Bradley... another good review! Probably not for me though on this one. Yet, I would like to add my experience in some of my personal blending. I took your advice on trying, Dunhill Elizabethan Mixture, and I liked it but it was missing some umph ...here again I took some Mississippi River which to me was good, yet the Perique was a little over the line. I then decided to do a 50-50 blend of both with a pinch of Orlek Flake...O M G....What a perfect end result! A very cool, yet bolder smoke, with a creamy finish!!! I hope you try this because I think you will be p!eased!!! But, as you said, let the Mississippi River and rubbed out Orlek lay out for and hour! Then add the perfect Dunhill...I hope you enjoy this blend as much as I enjoy your Vid's!!! John

Hey Bradley, I recently discovered a method to smoke SG tobaccos with a super high moisture content. All we have to do is to draw smoke through the mouthpiece while tamping, and never attempt to tamp down the baccy without a continuous air flow. I could smoke a whole bowl of freshly opened St. James without any relight!!!!!

I did open it and left it in the box with strong paper cover inside and the lid closed for three months or 5 , to be honest I didn't have any storage jar for it. post this period , It turned out to be good to smoke after you rub it and it shines the most in smaller piper like castello 2k size , or peterson system pipe. Currently, smoking it with peterson spigot system bent apple and its magical. SG tend to be hit or miss to be honest

Good review Bradley. I too find I need to give this ample time to dry out. I seem to be getting a little more consistency then you have. I also get a little bit of a nutty taste as well, on top of the flavors you mentioned. Not a favorite yet but will keep it in the rotation.

Hi Brad! Have you ever checked out STUFF like Cherokee, Sparrow, Gambler, etc.? The bag's day " pipe tobacco." To me they're like cigarette. They have Cavendish. Maybe that's what they do to call it pipe? I will be checking out Samual Gowen's Black XX + black cherry rope. I'd like to try Newminster #17 English Luxus @ $35.95 Thomson Cigar Co. You might like what's in the non- aromatic. ✌😁

When you were talking about bready vs grassy VAs, I thought that it would be cool if you do a video, in which you go back to previously reviews tobbaccos to compare and contrast them or something like that. You've recently reviewed dunhill flake... I think it's going to be my favorite. The less bready for me, the better. Any recommendations?

"Grassy" flakes that I can think of off the top of my head: Dunhill Flake, Orlik Golden Sliced and Capstan Blue, but there are many more.

@Cheeseybacun
@Cheeseybacun 8 лет назад
He does not... but I do, typically 85% of the time with 9mm charcoal filters and the remaining 15% with 6mm paper filters. I usually opt to use a pipe that takes a 6mm paper filter for straight Virginias because I think the charcoal filters totally devastate the subtle flavors present in most straight Virginia blends. Having said all that, I can tell you in no uncertain terms that no filter, be it 6mm, 9mm, paper, charcoal or otherwise, imparts any kind of improvement to this particular blend for me. Your mileage may vary, of course.
@stuffandthingsyoutube
@stuffandthingsyoutube 8 лет назад
Nope. No filter. I don't inhale anyway, and I don't like how they can effect the flavor.

@EsoxLVCIVS6776
@EsoxLVCIVS6776 4 года назад
Try Kendal Cream which has an almost cappuccino mouth feel for the first third of the bowl and then develops into a richer and very enjoyable smoke. If you rub it out and let it air dry until its almost dry but you can still push your thumbnail into a piece of broken flake but it doesn't stick to your fingers it's very well behaved. It took me by surprise on the first light (after the char) because its insanely creamy (not sweet cream but more warm milk). It also burns slowly if you gently sip it and I will get a good hour out of my large bowl straight billiard. Trust me you will hate it but by the end of the bowl you will have changed your mind considerably.

Hi Bradley,and Thanks for this informative review again,I'm becoming a bit scary about straight virginias, many time if find em biting, the worst experience I had in past was with that Mc Barens Virginia nro 1-while OGS is among my preferred ones,assumably this Gawith is a little stonger in Nic and flavor than OGS?Yet, I'd curious to ask you,Do you happen to keep sliced tobaccoes in their original retail tins or wheter you prefer to move them flakes into a glass jar?Have a Nice weekend and Be Well, Paul

Oh yeah, confirm my opinion, baby! In all seriousness though, inconsistent, harsh and... "oat-y" are all spot-on descriptions of this particular blend.
