Pipe Tobacco Review: Samuel Gawith "St. James Flake"

Samuel Gawith's "St. James Flake" is comprised of bright Virginia tobaccos and Louisiana Perique, pressed and then sliced into flakes. It promises a blend of sweet and spicy flavors melded into one tin.
So, how does this blend by the venerable Kendal tobacco blender compare to other Virginia/Perique mixtures?
Find out!
From the Samuel Gawith website:
"Genuine Perique is added to an already delicious and flavoursome blend of fine bright Virginias to give St. James the light peppery characteristic enjoyed by so many pipe smokers. Medium strength."

When Bradley states the nicotine level of a tobacco is 'Medium/ High', that usually means nicotine light-weights such as myself will be able to see through time soon after smoking it ;)
@stuffandthingsyoutube
@stuffandthingsyoutube 9 лет назад
Ha! I don't know if I'd go THAT far, but yes, I've realized that my idea of a lot of nicotine isn't necessarily the same as everyone else's. I TRY to account for that in my reviews, but I don't know if I always succeed.

Count yourself lucky. I’ve sampled a few he called ‘High’ and even warned to eat something and thought “meh” Granted I smoke Dark Burley by C&D several times per day and thus far it’s the highest vitamin N content I’ve had.

You have now entered the Gawith zone! 99.9% of the time I tin dry then jar it. I have a couple of time wanted to try some right away so I put a bowl or so's worth on a piece of paper and sit it on my cable box. It is slightly warm to the touch but not too hot. If your tobacco gets over 120 it will effect it. Its why storage is so important, even before you get it. Great video and great review!

+Charles Hibbs -Yep. I usually just pop the tin and let it sit for several weeks. Thanks for watching!

I always watch your reviews before I purchase my tobacco. Your videos have helped me get started in this new hobby that I'm beginning to fall in love with. I had just gotten a tin of St James Flake this morning (I'm from Malaysia so it's only 1 33pm here) and tried to smoke knowing that Gawith blends are always so moist, and then I checked your channel and realized you just posted this an hour ago. I'm fairly new so my palate isn't necessarily "refined" just yet, but I have grown to love English blends and Va/Pers are something I'd love to try after watching your reviews of them. Haha. Anyways, love your videos and keep them coming!

It's nice to have a viewer from Malaysia! I hope you enjoy the St. James Flake. It IS a very good quality tobacco - just a little sweeter than I like my VA/Pers to be, but that doesn't mean you won't enjoy it. Cheers! Bradley

Great review. Bro tip: try rubbing out the flake with your two palms rubbing it together (ew). You can then get close to a ribbon cut, even with SG flakes
@RequiemPipes
@RequiemPipes 9 лет назад
The SG flake cutter is said to be the oldest piece of industrial machinery still in use, in the world. The cut can be irregular to the point that one end of the flake is very thick, while the other end is quite thin.

Hi ya. Thanks for nice clip again.While writing this I'm smoking St.James Flake in my Pete's Spigot and I must say it's very good Va/Per.After a long period(around 15 years) with heavy Lat/English I started serious journey in the world of Va/Pers.Smoked occasionally Escudo,Orlik's Golden Slice,but after half a year messing with Perique I found few execelent mixture..St James Flake is one of them anothers are Stokkebye's LBEF,Pease's Haddo's delight¨and J:F Germain's Royal Jersey Perique, So,thanks again and thanks for the nice review.

From the tin colors I thought at first that you were reviewing "Best Brown Flake" by S. Gawith. Allow me to reccomend it to you. If you enjoy straight virginias, BBF delivers everything I expect from these blends. Sweet, smooth, "citrusy", cool, not boring at all. Not full bodied like its FVF cousin, nor all sweet and grassy like bright Va's can be. It's the best for me. Great review by the way. :-)

Thanks for the review. Very good (as usual) ! My tin of St James Flake was opened a couple of years ago. I don't remember why I didn't smoke it all when I first opened it -- probably because it was too moist as you pointed out. I smoked it yesterday to break in a new Dunhill County pipe. It was super dry and smoked extremely well. You are right about the syrupy sweetness -- I didn't like that. You're also right about the high perique content; it is very peppery, and I like that. On the whole it is not a bad tobacco, but I doubt if I'll buy it again. The strange thing about it is that it is almost as if the sweet and pepper tastes are separated rather than fused as one. There are certainly better VA-PER blends out there, at least for my taste.

Have you tried Sam's Flake yet? Also, Gawith just released a blend called Brown Sugar Flake with The Danish Pipe shop to try and recreate the old Orlik Brown flake (never had that one) but I can tell you this Brown Sugar Flake is amazing. no bite at all, slightly smaller flakes and seems more consistent in thickness, damn near half the moisture content of other Gawith's but still required just a little drying time. I was blown away with the first bowl of it last night. It's something that I could see myself smoking daily. I immediately like it more than Full Virginia Flake because it's been a lot less of a hassle, haha.

I know that you enjoy VaPers' but have you tried any BurPers and if so what do you think of the combo? My great uncle from Cutoff Louisiana, a really southern part of our state, occasionally makes home made BurPer cake tobacco that is fantastic. Him and my grandfather are the reason I smoke a pipe and have loved the smell of tobacco since I was little and I absolutely loved going with them to their favorite pipe shop that sadly has long been closed.Their little Cajun BurPer blend, with very fresh and very stout perique,along with their coffee with chicory is one of the best combos that I have ever experienced and love to this day.Give it a try sometime and see what you think because I think there's a good chance that you would enjoy it.

@kilgoretrout3966

i find this one (bought 2 oz. in bulk) to turn sour, halfway thru the bowl. i've smoked and enjoyed a lot of VaPers, and i prefer flake to ribbon, if possible. Don't know if i got a bad batch or not, but it was bad enough that i dumped the bowl 2/3 done. My pipe was and is fresh and clean, in fact i finished off my Deluxe Navy Rolls today, prior to trying the Gawith. Hating to be wasteful, i might get a low - cost Missouri Meerschaum pipe to finish this (if i can get thru it) without coloring the taste in any of my main pipes. i don't know if i should call Pipes & Cigars, to let them know of this or not. i doubt they would send an alternate replacement, but it may be good to make them aware. If anyone else has encountered this, or other problem with this blend, please comment. Now back to my HH Vintage Syrian and Tea. :) The world is set right again! As always, Everyone, Be Well, -trout

I'm a Cuban cigar smoker..nothing against other cigars...I just prefer them.. but i just bought a corn cob pipe to "try out" the pipe hobby.....what would be another good pipe to try out? Nothing crazy in price. Another thing I dont understand is ..."Pipe" smoking should be a relaxing thing...yet all of the pipe smokers I see are constantly lighting/re-lighting their pipes over....and...over or tamping down the ash..lol NOTHING relaxing about that. Love the show. Cheers from Canada.
@stuffandthingsyoutube
@stuffandthingsyoutube 9 лет назад
It IS relaxing! ;-) All that tamping and re-lighting ends up becoming part of the ritual. You'll enjoy it... really! As to pipes, I guess it all depends on what you mean by "crazy in price." I'm a fan of Peterson pipes. you could definitely find a decent one in the 100 dollar range new, much cheaper used. Savinelli also offers quite a few mid-range pipes. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pulA6FzcJuY.html

Your taste for VaPer's has got me interested. I just received an order including: Elizabethan Mixture, Sixpence and Three Nuns (ok - not technically a VaPer, this I know). I also have a tin of Escudo that I ordered along with some McCranies Red Ribbon - but I had to send it to my GF in Montana for her to bring across the border in May as McCranies won't ship to the True North. So, my question, where should I start as an introduction to VaPers?
@stuffandthingsyoutube
@stuffandthingsyoutube 9 лет назад
Hmmm.... Interesting question. I'd probably start with Elizabethan. It's probably the most "standard" of the VA/Pers you mentioned (though delicious as well). Sixpence is very good, but it's a bit different than your average VA/Per. Escudo is also delicious but sweeter and more dessert-like.

Do you find that flake tobaccos smoke better with a certain shape or style of pipe? I know some people have mentioned Savinelli 320's for example being a better pipe for smoking flake. I'm curious where your experience/opinion rests. Great review! Thanks!
@stuffandthingsyoutube
@stuffandthingsyoutube 9 лет назад
Conventional wisdom is that you should smoke flakes in a tall, narrow bowl. I have had my best experiences with (non-rubbed-out) flakes in wide, shallow, pot-shaped bowls, so who the hell knows? Just do some experimenting on your own, and see what works for you.

I'm getting to be a pain commenting on your videos... Haha. But, serious question - I know you don't smoke aromatics, and typically I hate them more than anything. Recently, however, I found ONE blend, blended locally to me, that has become quite a favorite. I would be willing to send you a sample for review purposes if you'd be willing to try it. Not your typical aromatic in my opinion.. Actually tastes like it's described, 0 bite, and very easy smoking. Thought of this because of your discussion about flavoring and casing.

If I want to smoke it sooner rather than later, I'll just take enough out to fill a bowl and put it aside on a paper towel for a while (depending on how wet it is). If I don't care about smoking it right away, I'll open the tin, which breaks the vacuum seal, then close the tin up again and set it aside for as long as a month (again, depending on how wet it is).
