Orange County surf music legends The Chantays (Santa Ana High School) perform their classic surf hit "Pipeline" at the recent Sunday afternoon concert at the International Surfing Museum in Huntington Beach, CA. This song is listed in the top five surf hits of all time, no matter what survey/chart you're looking on. The group included two of the original Chantays (Bob Spickard on guitar and Bob Welch on drums) along with 40+year Chantays guitarist Gil Orr. They were joined by surf music legends Kerry Chester (Dick Dale and the Del-Tones) on keyboards and John Denton (The Lively Ones) on bass. This is an unedited version of their performance on Sunday, 9/20/09.

The Chantays ... they are the ones. I got their album in 1963 and listened to ALL of their songs day and night. Ghost Riders ... Wayward Nile ... all of 'em! Excellent stuff ... I still play Pipeline to this day in whatever band I happen to be playing in! I frosts me whenever I hear Pipeline and the Ventures in the same breath! Chantays all the WAY! God bless the Chantays!

None of this would have been possible, if it weren't for the genius of Leo Fender and his innovative guitars and amps....even before I could play, I'd visit the local music store and just stare at his products in total AWE!.....and when the mastery of The Chantays, rendered the exquisite "Pipeline", how could it not be the very first song I learned.....It's been said that the Beatles launched a million bands, I'd venture to say The Chantays inspired a million guitar players ! Thanks guys !

Oh yes. The high school memories rush back and splash like a foaming wave. Bushy hair style, white Levi's, spotless white tees covered by a colorful wool Pendleton shirt. The fortunate had woody station wagons and all week plans for which beach would be the site of the weekends surfing safari. The future could wait. The moment was now and a beckoning Summer waited just ahead.

@bigguy4570 Hey BigGuy, thx for the post. In case you didn't get a chance to maybe look at some of the other bands that day (they're on my channel at tompotts0615, I'll give you a quick explanation for the drummer in front of the bands. There was a "surf drummer" showcase that day, which at times featured multiple drummers (including a "drum battle" with father / son drummers,Tracy & Matt Longstreth). I happened to be there that day to video my friend,Tracy,and ended up shooting most of the day.

(Part 2) Denise and I were together then, perhaps even now somewhere in our hearts, for I like to believe that true love never dies, when you meant it. Never knew the name of the song. Took a skill in Thunder Bay, maintaining aircraft, and worked on heavies in Montreal. Came home one evening, and there it was again, phantom of the seas. Called the radio station, what was that song? Sound of papers, pages turning, playlist. Pipeline. Chantays.

(Part 1) I suppose it was early summer 1975, as I stepped in the door of my parent's home, Montreal, that I first heard it. The amazing rythm, building and swelling as the surf, the snapping of the canvas seeking the tight line, keyboard notes as sunlight that sparkles on the waters, carried away, yet transfixed in those moments in time. Told Denise all about it.

Wow..!! What a RUSH....had the pleasure 2 play with Mr. Orr and Mr. Spickard 2day (tues) in Balboa....After a 2 hr bus ride down from Anaheim, I had no Idea what musical treat was in store for me...would GLADLY make that trip ANYTIME..!! what a BLAST..

One hit wonders while at Santa Ana High School because their parents wouldn't let them tour until after graduation. They told me that as a bar band in 80s, Dana Point, Ca. I bar tended and they were too much fun. Lots of retired Hollywood stars came in, but these guys were the best. Heard Pipeline 3 times a night, love them forever.

(Part 3 of 3) Big smile, old friend, here we meet again, rogue wave of the high seas, yet lifting as it were. No one to tell it to now, though. Long sadness, but no regrets. We do our best. More years pass, and as with the comets, Pipeline and the Chantays come around again, every so often, gentle reminder, with the rythms and the keys: Vancouver, Seattle, Geneva, Montpellier, like a breeze through the hair, touch of sun upon the cheeks, hanging ten in the curl...the Pipeline. wishing you the best of luck, these guys should perform at USO shows, boost morale for your troops. Well, I'm a German guy sitting in a crap hole country called Nigeria enjoying this! Clearly made my day :)
