3-cam-version of the final song of one of the best MK-concerts of this tour in Cologne on 21/06/2015. Many thanks to dvddubbingguy, Stefan Esselink and Dominik Rec for their nice videos used for this multicam project.
When my dear sweet 98 year old dad was passing i played this song for him . My head was on his heart as he took his last breath. He wasn't afraid of dying, he just loved living. ❤
,Sorry my english is not so good.but i hope you under stand me..i com from Russia ( Novosibirsk )and life in Germany with my german husband. He say to me: Look for this guitar player, after this moment, i love the Songs from Mark, all time
The song is about Knopfler's uncle Freddie ( mother side : Frederick John Laidler ) who was a piper of the 1st Battalion, Tyneside Scottish, the Black Watch, Royal Highland Regiment. Freddie carried his pipes into action in World War II and was killed with fellow fighters at Ficheux, near Arras in the north of France in May 1940. He was just 20 years old. Knopfler describes the moment of Freddie's death in the latter's own words: This has been a day to die on Now the day is almost done Here the pipes will lay beside me Silent with the battle drum

This Song Has Goose- pimpled Me for every second I've heard it.⚡⚡⚡⚡ Now I fully know why! It's like a National Anthem of Love! ⭐🌈🌠🔭 Thanks for this touching information. ♥️
Mark is of legendary status. I am glad to be alive to be a consumer of his rich music which is not popular here in Kenya but very popular in my spheres.
Actually we had this particular song at the funeral of our brother, who died in an awful car accident. We will never forget this song, it was so well choosen as he had always been a big fan of Dire Straits, right from the beginning.
Listening Mark is listening che sound of Scotland, Scotland magic and wonderful. How much I love this man and his music! We will return to our land, I 'm Italian but that is my land.
Lovely to hear that you have such a strong emotional attachment with Scotland. I must admit that we Scots love a sad song - we can be great fun, but also great sadness as well. I think it may have to do with our past history, but it is inbuilt into us. However it does mean that we can and have produced some great, emotional songs - Gerry Rafferty “ Baker Street” , Rabbie Burns “ Auld Lang Syne”, Blue “ I wish I could fly “ amongst many others. Wishing you well. 🏴🏴🏴
Lyrics: When I leave this world behind me To another I will go If there are no pipes in heaven I'll be going down below If friends in time be severed Someday we will meet again I'll return to leave you never Be a piper to the end This has been a day to die for Now the day has almost gone Up above a choir of seabirds Turns to face the setting sun Now the evening dawn is calling And all the hills are burning red And before the night comes falling Clouds are lined with golden thread We watched the fires together Shared our quarters for a while Walked the dusty roads together Came so many miles This has been a day to die on Now the day is almost done Here the pipes will lay beside me Silent will the battle drum If friends in time be severed Someday here we will meet again I return to leave you never Be a piper to the end
There are men who speak to the most affectionate and secretive part of our soul and so make it clear that you like to call on you: GOD BLESS YOU BEATIFUL MEN!!!
Oh my God, this man never fails to tear me up. I should have known it would be like that as far back as Sultans of Swing but you know, sometimes you just don't see it coming.
This is and has been the place I retreat to, friends from 30+ years of dear friends. Most have passed in life, but my mind still sees them next to me...they welcomed me into their lives and family. Beautiful friends, old white guy from Austin, TX. I am lost sometimes, but thankful.
Beautiful song, and what a consummate musician/pro that Mark is. He has no problem sharing the stage with other players, and he has no problem backing them up like he's doing here. He doesn't overplay like others, and maintains/controls his volume just right to complement the song and his band. It's easier said than done. A pro's pro.
This is one of the most deeply felt song with word's of genuine heart with my own feelings in each strum, note and chord! It is sad with the honesty of believing that there will be place for all our purest heart's to be as one! That was beautiful!🌹Heart to Heart!🌹 Your Guide to Happiness! I know! ❤ I Love You.Wisdom comes with age and experiences with others and God! Namaste.💖 Respectively KathyL.Lyons💖 The most precious of wonderments you give me each step in every way!
as famous as he is ,terribly under rated muso ,,,as a muso I see how he pulls the sound out of that guitar ,its all touch and not easy ,,,much easier to shred than play with touch,,,god love ya
Sempre que penso em dizer que amo esta música, me lembro que tem aquela, a outra, a outra e mais a outra... na verdade, amo todas!!! Mark, você é meu ídolo! Lov u 4ever 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸❤️🦋
Can't help but shed tears when listening to this song especially in times of grief or reflection. God bless this man and many thanks to him for sharing his beautiful and masterful talents with the world.
Mark Knopfler is really a State of Art in composition and a fine singer, and obviouslly playing guitar. I hope he comes again to Sao paulo. Their songs are like an incredible old wine.
Thomas Labudda. DANKE.
