Mackenzie wanted to take his sister flying while we were visiting her in Northampton MA. Amanda asked all the right questions and was a very reserved passenger, only asking to return to the airport once takeoff was complete, but before leaving the area.
Hey, did you guys know that the FAA actually certifies flight instructors to tell you everything that I try to convey in these videos? You should definitely talk to one of them instead of trusting some video you found on the internet, because who am I to tell you how to fly? I'm just a pilot sharing my experiences with the world, and these videos are not meant to be instructional or advisory in any respect.

That's an excellent pilot who puts his passengers at ease, I particularly like the way he immediately returned to the airfield as soon as one of his passengers let him know they weren't happy. There is a chance she will fly again one day when she gets the courage, everybody wasn't born to like flying but you can sure put your passengers at ease, well done man.

I definitely try to put my passengers at ease no matter what, even if that means letting them watch all the preflight checks and explaining everything that I'm looking for. I find that most people feel way better about flying once they've seen that.

Great job with your passenger. It's just as important how you treated her after landing as in the air, so as to not make her feel bad that she requested an end to the flight. If you're not already a CFI, you should consider becoming one. You would be excellent.

+Eric Francis Thanks so much, that means a lot. I've always enjoyed teaching people about anything from quantum physics to C++, but aviation most of all. I act as an instructor to several of my friends, but only in the sense that it saves them money that they don't have to spend on a real instructor.

I'm right there with you. I was trying to figure out if it would be feasible for gf and I to visit her family up north long enough for me to get flight instruction from him, and then I found this comment and realized he wasn't actually an instructor. lol Nick, yes, that means I would actually be willing to drive 1500 miles to have you as an instructor.. lol

I took someone up who was a little nervous about flying. he told me that doing all that talking was like a foreign language to him so he didn't know if things were going good or bad. it helped to exacerbate his nervousness. After lunch we went back up. I kept all the talk through to a minimum other than telling him what to expect as far as turns, noises and bumps, (Airspeed alive, oil pressure good, etc, were all left out and only said in my head) Instead, I drew his focus away from the plane and onto the ground. Hey, look at that - was the type of conversations we had from that point on. He said it made all the difference in the world. That might work well for you on your next nervous passenger trip. If you try it, let us know how it worked for you. Great flying, communicating and landing. I'd fly with you!

Great Tips! I'll test it out next time I have a nervous passenger, or perhaps we do a revisit with Amanda and see if we can produce the same results.

Michael Bohn I find that a normal fear of heights is determined by the conditions and trust of the situation. For those of us without acrophobia, let's be thankful!

Not at all! I loove flying, been gliding, microlighting - but if you made me hold on to the top of a flagpole in a breeze, I'd whimper like a baby!!!

Awesome. Professional, well done.We can all learn from this. Amanda probably tried her best, but had to give up. Thank goodness there was a cool - headed pro as pilot. I know what this is like. My wife has a similar problem. I love flying and so does she, but the vertigo gets her most times. I can usually calm her as she trusts me (I hope). Well handled.

I'm quite impressed with your calmness and professionalism, and I could see Amanda's relief when you calmly and immediately said that you were returning to the field. Talking through the unusual feeling maneuvers with a first time flyer was icing on the cake. I haven't yet experienced a passenger who asked to return after takeoff, but this is how I will strive to respond. If we're jerks when someone is afraid, then we increase an already somewhat sour public perception of general aviation. In the future as she speaks of this experience with others, she's bound to mention how calm and reassuring you were at a time when frustration could cause a negative reaction. Well done sir!

Bloody good job!! I always keep the welfare of my passengers first and foremost too.I want them to come flying with me again, after all!!. I once took up a friend up. We didn't even get out of the circuit area when she pulled the plug. I also explain things out loud, so people don't get freaked out when I pull power back or whack out flaps. We as pilots, are used to the sounds and feeling of the plane, but loads of people have never been in light planes before. Explaining things definitely eases their concerns. PS: You have a really confident radio voice. Professional, succinct and accurate. Bravo!

Hey there! Thanks for those who were able to appreciate and/or learn from Nick's professionalism here. My brother told me he was flying into Northampton with Nick, and I planned on driving down to see them. It was NOT my intention to be GETTING on the plane! However, isn't it good to try things we are scared of? I am so grateful for Nick, and I know that I have no interest in getting on a small plane any time soon. But at least I know I CAN do it, regardless of motion sickness and anxiety.

You were the smart cookie to say you needed to go back before it was too far away. Always good to try new things but also to know what your limits are as well as speak up for yourself in a nice way. Nobody was upset, but I felt bad for you, my housemate had an ear infection that created loss of balance/dizziness. He couldn't walk around a corner in one motion. He had to stop turn and then move forward. Anything else and his body would be turned but he was still heading the original direction, took him a month to get over it. But I know he was lucky.

Hi Amanda! You were a champ! My own first flight in a small plane was not great either, but I didn't say anything until we were quite far from the airport. Not great. But over time, and a few very small flights, I grew to love it. WITH meds. lol. Anyway, good on you for trying it out!

Great Job , your passengers may get over their fears and try to go up again, also the safety statements of what is happening with the flaps and turns helps people with the FREAK OUT.

+Jeff T I hope they do, but if not, at least it was a story for them to tell later. Thanks, I always try to adjust my mannerisms to fit whoever I'm flying with. Making your GA passengers feel safe is just as important as when the captain of a commercial flight speaks over the intercom.

I can't believe how come nobody had gave her hard time for started whining right after take off.... Daaaaaaaahhhhh, she shouldn't jumped in that plane in the first place I she knew she was going to start panicking... Good job for the pilot. Not only he had a lot of patience with his passengers, but he handled the situation in a very professional way. My respects to all the pilots in the world!👍👍👍👍

Now that I'm older I became an RC pilot. I'm actually a member of the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA), and have myself registered as an RC pilot with the FAA. Flying is my passion, and technology had gave me a chance to achieve my dream!... Nowadays I enjoy a lot to fly my planes First Person View (FPV ) and it is an amazing experience. You should give it a try someday. ricardopr54 Ahh, Arizona. Must be about 116 degrees there today, yeah? I do like it there, actually. I've been meaning to try the FPV setup for RC aircraft recently. I will hopefully get to experience that to a whole new level with the wingtip cameras mounted on my autonomous cherokee in a few months. With that distance between the cameras, the parallax should make me feel like a god strolling amongst the clouds :) I'll check out your channel as soon as I finish answering comments for the day and upload my latest video!

Nice work. Love the call outs to yourself. Good to hear another pilot do that. When you asked your passenger how she was feeling, a technique I now use is a percentage scale. "Hey, on a scale of 0 to 100 percent, how are you feeling." Sure helps me recognize if someone is start to feeling worse but doesn't want to say anything.

Friendly Skies Film​ Always better to share the airplane with someone. There's a video on my channel where I took my aunt and her friend flying and used thst technique. Both were never at 100 and when i started doing turns and they were focusing on the ground, it dropped to like 70 or something. Time to get back home. I too gave them a time frame so they both knew what was going on.

She took xanax after she got in the airplane :-( If you know someone is going to take xanax to manage their anxiety.....try to encourage them to do so 30 minutes before departure. While xanax works fairly quickly on the body, the body still needs some time to calm down and get used to being in a relaxed state. When you landed she made a comment to the effect...."I feel like I can breathe again" Most likely the anxiety was causing her to breath shallow and that is likely the reason. You handled yourself with great professionalism and did everything you could to provide a positive experience to your passenger. Has she tried flying with you again since this incident ? Presuming she has the right dose of xanax from her doctor, maybe taking it earlier might help her get through it.

As an aviation buff since I was a kid I really enjoy your're videos.I wanted to join the Air Force Academy,when I was young but because of my vision I realised I could never be a fighter pilot ,watching your videos makes me realise I probably couldn't be a civilian pilot it's very complicated thanks for smashing my dreams

I'm a low hours pilot but already I've discovered the joy of taking passengers. Having watched a number of RU-vid videos about nervous passengers, I noticed a lot of them close their eyes and try to hold their head steady with the aircraft during turns or flap extension. I think this makes their sensation of movement worse.Nice video and procedures.

+capacityplus I think you are absolutely correct! Sometimes I cannot understand why people do what they do, but that one particular tendency definitely makes things worse in the air. I have been fortunate enough to never have any stomach turning feelings, even on roller coasters and high-G situations, so I am at a loss for what to tell my passengers to do, but there are some really good recommendations you can find online. Superbly done. Just wait until you get a passenger who starts screaming. Not because of fear but because they were asleep during the decent. Her ears plugged and she awoke at about 4000 screaming in pain. I had to climb back to 8000 before she was able to bear it and then I had to give instruction on how to keep her ears clear on the way back down. Lesson learned; Always wake up your passengers during the decent phase.

When she said "Oh I'm just taking a Xanax" he most likely had it in the back of his mind, so when she said she wanted to back it wasn't a surprise. It seemed like he had already prepared for it the way everything went so "uneventful" with the return. Motion sickness is hard on some people if they haven't flown very much or not on smaller aircraft. I recall the first commercial plane I flew out of my home town sat around 20 and walking to the back of the plane there was a hump in the middle where the rear wheels went up into.

Your videos are great and informative. For unexperienced passengers: twisting the head that much (looking at everything) can confuse the inner ear balance organ and it is even worse (for the balance organ to interpret) in the back seat.

+U.N. Owen True, true. I try to get my passengers to focus on one thing rather than just being overwhelmed. One experiment I would love to try: I've always heard it's better to look outside the plane, but as an alternative, I've also heard to look at the wingtips. I wonder which is actually better, and what exactly the science behind it is.

You handled that perfectly! I used to get airsick (i'm assuming that was what she was feeling) when beginning training, and this is exactly the reaction I would want someone to have.

+Josh McCorquodale As an engineer, I may not be the most emotionally aware person in the word, but this is one aspect that I think I have down. Half of the things I repeat to myself while doing checks are actually designed to notify my passengers of changes, such as "Cruise checklist: pitch down and bring the engine power back." I was actually just thinking about a video on passenger comfort today that I will probably produce in the coming weeks. Thanks for the compliments!

Nice one! You did a great job of dealing with a nervous passenger! I get the impression that once you started talking about terrain avoidance with the 430, she got disconcerted. I had a similar experience when talking about selecting a suitable field prior to changing tanks "Just in case"...passenger read far too much into what I'd said and assumed that the tank change would be somewhat dramatic :) Safe flying!

I remember flying around the country on commercial flights with my boss who has a PPL. He would always tell me stories about how he nearly crashed a plane or how he would fly in cloud banks using a cup of coffee as an attitude indicator. Made for some fun trips.

I would like to add my congrats for a job well done working with your reluctant rear seat passenger. Before I had to give up flying because of the high cost of operating my 172 and especially the super high cost of maintenance, I like yourself especially enjoyed taking my friends for a ride. The first timers were always a lot of fun. It always annoyed me when some of my fellow pilots would brag about how they loved to scare their passengers with steep turns, low fly by's over houses and other abrupt maneuvers. Just as you are I was always extremely concerned about their comfort and did everything I possibly could to make it an enjoyable experience for them rather than a stomach turning disaster. I still have people tell me how much they enjoyed their flight 20 years later. That is a great feeling. Keep up the good work on these videos. Very enjoyable and very informative. One other thing. Go on and get your instrument rating if you haven't already. Well worth the time and money.

Even when a flight instructor says that they've done that to new students, I'm skeptical, but I can also see how some good judgement could be used there and actually have some fun with someone who might enjoy that experience. I really I annoyed by those kinds of pilots, like you said... I have even been known to cancel fun flights with friends if I think I'm going to be too stressed that do to even show them an entertaining time. I wasn't planning on the instrument, at least not in my first round of flying in my college days, but I will definitely think about your message when it's time to consider it again. I have several immaculate friends like you, all successful, very generous with their expensive toys and time. Always the best times with them. Our family is very careful to show our hosts a good time as well. We own a nice speed boat, same size as yours. We're often shocked by the mood of someone aboard, typically the friends of our close friends. I catch them putting out a cig on my carpet. Cutting up the seats through their paper plate of food. Wanting to come and go on their schedule, regardless of everyone else wanting to stay out all day. You don't want to alienate your close friends but its fairly often that someone comes along that doesn't appreciate the perfect weather on that perfect afternoon. I too will return to the dock early.

I tend to help them to the gunwale and ask if they would prefer to act like a gentleman for the rest of the trip or to swim home. I've only had one take me up on my challenge. I did turn around and pick them back up though. Sulking little bastard.

I was in a Piper arrow yesterday. My second time flying ever... Only every bit of me was saying NO! For about 10min. Then its fun:)

Great job, just one comment. It seemed to me that Amanda was struggling from the beginning (joking about Xanax was the first clue), but I think the tipping point was when you were heads-down explaining the 430 to Mac. It probably made her a bit more nervous that your attention seemed to be diverted.

I began flying at age 15....but then delayed for years and didn't get my PPL until age 35...two weeks before 9/11. :( Between the hit taken by the aviation industry by those events, along with other factors in the industry, it was a tough path to follow. Still, happy I did it for a while at least. If I were 10 years younger, I'd likely have stuck with it. Reality sets in as you get a bit older, however....

Richard Pannemann Well that's a sad thought :( My instructor is in his mid-sixties and is a better pilot, has more energy, better memory, and is way better at modern video games than I am. He even has a fancy new Samsung phone, while I haven't updated my phone's operating system in 7 years, so I guess I was always taught that if you're a pilot, you never have to grow up :)

Excellent video! I always enjoy and learn a lot from watching vids with passengers, since I don't have much experience, myself. Kind of on the training fast track towards commercial so I haven't really had the time or budget for recreational flying. Alas!

+EnDSchultz1 I always knew since day one that the real joy in flying for me is sharing it with others. I'm not really planning on getting any more ratings, and I never fly by myself anymore. It's all about priorities, I suppose, or as one of my friends remarks, "We all make choices!" Where are you doing your training? I know a number of students at Embry Riddle. Their flight schedules make me so jealous.

+Friendly Skies Film CWU, Ellensburg, Washington. Scenery's nothing to write home about, but the weather is almost always sunny - even though it's often also accompanied by 35 knot winds out of the west! Still, faculty's great, we've finally mustered enough planes to get everybody flying 3x per week, and the aviation program has more students this year than ever! I've started on my commercial certificate and the training calls for oodles of maneuvers, solo flying and cross country time... a far cry from the instrument rating which is 40 hours of doing standard rate turns whilst staring at the panel. It's going to make for an exciting change of pace.

I watched this again. Just caught that she was taking a Xanax right during your preflight. Yeah, you did do something wrong...passenger choice. Ha. Really like your videos. I rent a Warrior a lot. ... her honesty is remarkable ... it would help if you explain to all 1-st time plane passengers that 1-st 300 feet up, and until straight level is established is always uncomfortable, after which everything pays off with joy , all up till the landing ... this is what most of pilots never think of, either, but it's just telling you that you are perfectly healthy, when you react like her. My kudos for the lady for her remarkable honesty, and you jarheads can learn some pre-flight manners from this. That's why is called pre-flight BRIEFING, and what is used for.

How about a video showing the warning signs of a bad first time guest. Can you typically predict during your preflight briefing if they will be a good guest and enjoy the experience OR get queasy (throw up missing container), belligerent, distracting (yelling/screaming), hijack you, push buttons to stall, stomp on pedals at touchdown, and want to go home right after takeoff... basically all the things that would really irritate the pilot and other guests. Again, they seemed perfect before takeoff.

I notice you check your Carb Heat before the Initial Descent. Is that part of the Warrior Checklist, or a Personal Checklist item. Coming from Carb Cessna’s, I know the Carb Heat comes on before landing, but in my Cherokee, the POH says to use Carb Heat as needed. Either way, it is a great flow item. Just curious if it’s specific to the Warrior.

Most if not all oral drugs that I know of take at least 15 minutes to take effect; they need time to be absorbed into the bloodstream and sometimes dissolve. I have to wonder if your passenger had allowed more time for the Xanax to take effect, that is to say, taken it sooner, if your flight would have gone differently.

You were a pro, very considerate... completely different from most other pilots I've flown with. Later, her brother should have been all over her for wasting your time and money. I know pilots who would never invite either of them again, unfortunate but true. Couldn't you have given her 15 minutes to see if she gets over it? Get her mind on sight seeing rather than how she feels. I've eaten too much, thrown up and was told to try to feel better, we're staying up another hour. Also, we've already spoken about the need to go in mid flight. This was another terrific video topic.

I'm always impressed that you pick out the details, like them being siblings :) I'll be totally honest, it's a freaking nightmare of mine to have someone throw up in my immaculate plane, so I would like to avoid at all costs :P I've thought about your very question, though. It's a really tough call. I might make that call with one of my friends that I know well, but seeing as this was one of only like three times I've met Amanda, I wasn't going to risk it. Great questions as always! :)

Adam Gilmore Let's see, where shall I begin... Erik and Preston have both taken a few lessons, but aren't serious yet. Killian has probably 10hrs of sim time and 2-3 behind the controls. Most of my friends are engineers, though, so they definitely appreciate the skill, but often lack the money to take the lessons. I teach them as much as I can so it might be cheaper for them later down the line. Also because that's my favorite part of taking others flying ;)

How did you land on the Warrior instead of a 172/other trainer? 99% of my time is in a Warrior, but I'm being told maintenance is significantly cheaper in a 172. I like the low-wing and throttle lever instead of the vernier >.

Just want to point out its not a TCAS, TCAS gives you instructions on what to do to avoid the traffic. Typically only bigger jets have TCAS, I would have to guess yours is a TIS.

I would have probably taken here to the nearest veterinarian clinic and had her put down after that bs! It appeared you removed the flaps while still on the runway before a turn off? I was always taught not to do that in training??

I don't know why I have never been fearful of height or flying. I even remember helping my dad when I was in my mid teens (under driving age) and he asked if I was scared of heights. We had a TV antenna on a tower that was in the ground and was stabilized with braces on the back of the 2nd floor. So I got on the tower at the 2nd floor and climbed the additional 40 steps to the top of the tower to replace the antenna wire that had deteriorated over the past 16 years since it had been put up. Now I think about it and just think "what was i doing!!! The tower moves and sways, not much but still." (also why he didn't want to climb the tower as he was at around 230-250lb and I was about 1/2 of that) I had a safety harness belt that went around the tower and it attached to another that went around me. The only thing I had to remember was to keep my knees locked when I started working on the wires.

I get this subconscious feeling, flying or as a passenger, that the bottom of the plane will fall off anytime. It doesnt affect me in terms of being scared or distracting me, but it's always there, like, working on 1% energy. A tiny thought of 'shit, this is going to fall apart and there's nothing between me and the ground', and I don't know where it comes from or why. Anyone else?

I would not take pax that didn't know what they were in for in the first place. I woulda been pretty pissed. Couldn't you have tried some distraction techniques first to mitigate her uneasiness before giving up like that?

Someone here who hasn't flown small aircraft before and having watched a few of your videos back to back.. While moving down the runway and shortly before actual takeoff, you give "a little right rudder" each time. Is it a trim that is out of adjustment or do you just happen to have crosswinds each time?

It's actually caused by "P-Factor" which causes a yaw of the airplane in one direction, depending on which way your propeller is spinning. Great Question! :D

I didn't realize the rotation of the prop would cause a change in yaw. I assumed it would cause a rolling force that would be cancelled out by the wing surface. Is that something you have to constantly maintain pressure on the rudder to compensate for or is it only noticeable on takeoff?

I'm not a pilot...yet, and I guess I just didn't " get it " since I've not been through the training. My initial reaction to the passenger "wanting to go home ," was oh, the huge , pill popping princess wants us to cater to her every whim. Ha,ha! Being me, and with my shy, retiring, and non confrontational attitude, I would have told her to pop another Xanax and shut up. After reading the other comments I see that my response would NOT have been the proper one!😆I guess I have much to learn when I finally start flight school!

I had that issue last week with a potential girlfriend who wanted to 'try'. I planned a 15 minute flight and ended up getting no further than cross wind, and landed immediately. At least she tried. All I can say is ... NEXT!!!

When talking to Clearance Delivery, Ground, Tower, App, Dep or Center you don't end the transmission with their name, just begin. In this situation, you may end the transmission with your own call-sign. If you end with theirs, you sound dumb... When using a Common Traffic Advisory Frequency, it is customary to begin and end with the facility name. Oftentimes in the US, there are many airports in close proximity that use the same frequency. Book-ending the transmission helps clarify who should be listening. Audience, Call Sign, Location, Intention, Audience There are two basic formats for radio work here in the US.

OK I get that. Last night we had made nearly identical dishes for my wife and my daughter. A Carbonara pasta using Smoked Gouda and Bacon, Good stuff. My kid had hers using spaghetti squash (diet) and we used spaghetti for the dish. My wife and daughter said the dish that used the squash was almost like eating bacon potato soup that I prepare and it was very good. No mater how they insisted it was good I said NO I DON'T LIKE SPAGHETTI SQUASH. When you don't like something you don't do it and spit it out and ruin others meal. Likewise if you don't like heights and have a great fear of flying you don't fly. It just shows courtesy to the other people who enjoy it. She is not evil incarnate, she should have sat in the car and waited it out so that he brother could enjoy it. You are a good pilot and very accommodating to her. PS I am afraid of heights. I don't even like standing on my own roof but I love to fly. Strange. It's probably the faith that the plane will not crash, however I can easily trip on a roof.

I dislike all forms of motion sickness and I experience them all! (Which is why I can't do amusement parks). For some reason I have adapted to flying a Diamondstar DA 40 and will be obtaining my ASEL private pilot license. After about 12 hours in the left seat my motion sickness has gone away! I'm very happy about that!

+CL gamers I've made a lot of different choices in my life to have allowed me to have this kind of fun while in college, but as for what I do... computer graphics, corporate video, and odd advisory positions on technically oriented companies.

And what good would it do anyone on board to say 'no we're carrying on'? She'd be more stressed, the pilot would be stressed, not good combination :) Nicely handled Nick :)

It is good the way you handled the situation for the moment. But I’m gonna play devil advocate here a good pilot would brief their passengers and try to find out if they are afraid of heights or small airplanes. That girl had no business being on the plane and as expensive as flying is, it was a waste of time and money. Remember you should know your passengers and some of their good and bad experiences when it comes to flight or amusement rides before you try to commit them, especially to the rear seat of a small aircraft.
