Two times a fractured jaw. One time dislocated another jaw. Broke some ribs and fracture one eye socket. In 9 defenses. In my knowledge no other boxer of any weight had this record ever. The king of punchers.

I was surprised a guy with a good win ratio was a contender with only 4 KO’s but he lasted much longer than I expected against Pepino, who has one punch KO power in both hands. Hats off to Volbrecht, he had courage, heart and came to fight and fought his best until the KO. Cuevas v Leonard would have been a good fight. I thought it was made and a date set. Couldn’t find out why they never fought. Anyone know.

Cuevas was a lot like Mike Tyson: Awesome power, magnificent Title Reign & slow sad decline. Too bad he didn't fight the other greats in his prime. Harold Volbrecht was a good fighter who got his W.B.A. title shots seven years apart as first, a young prospect and then, as an seasoned veteran, unfortunately.

@@Jonathan-pp3du you are correct. And that's what ruined him. He was never the same after that fight. Before the fight, Cuevas has this aura about him. A pure banger. He was absolutely nuts to go to that All - Black Cobo arena in downtown Detroit. I love re-watching that fight. Hearns had a reach like a Heavyweight. No joke. I still think if Cuevas would've connected with one of his atomic bombs, history might be different. The reach was just too much for Cuevas and years later, Duran. Hearns was a freak.

I have always been in the middle ground with Cuevas. He started young and had numerous loses before he turned 18. He did develop after winning the title and beat some good fighters, Weston; Gray, Shields, Ranzany. With al that being said and with all due respect, I feel he was overrated at the elite level. Thomas Hearns proved this and I would have picked Leonard, Duran, before the Hearns fight, and Benitez all to beat him. He did have great power but had limited skills outside of that. Part of the problem was the fact that he won a championship at a young age before he could develop. Still as I mentioned, he did beat some good fighters and should be proud of all he accomplished.
@elchivato8147

Patrick Verona I feel that the lack of defensive skills of pipino cuevas was his downfall. That being said I think the stats are also undeniable with 11 title defenses and a championship reign that lasted over for years something neither hearns, Benitez, or even Duran as great as they were can claim at welterweight. (Duran at lightweight is a different story). When pipino lost to hearns its was just his time even thought he was only 22 all those years of defending the title took a told on him and facing a hungry ultra skillful hearns didn't help. But without a doubt he deserves to be in the conversation of welterweight greats.
@kaio2212able

You could even say he had a puncher's chance with any of the elite if he could land against any of them. Hearns definitely exposed him though. Cuevas is one of my favorite boxers to watch.
@sandpeat

Patrick Verona I’d say more like he got a much need hype job rather than being over rated. This was to make a fight with Leonard or Hearns more lucrative and make the victory more meaningful for whoever beat him.

I was a huge boxing fan in my teens when Pipino ruled but I never saw him fight. He wasn't a TV fighter until this appearance. I used to read The Ring religiously and their descriptions of his devastating power made me believe he had more than a puncher's chance against the best in the division. When I saw this fight, all of that changed. I knew he wouldn't stand a chance against Leonard, Hearns or Duran. Way too easy to hit and his punching power was derived from long, slow looping arcs. Sugar Ray would have handled him easy and I knew Hearns would destroy him. The only fighter he had a chance to survive against was Duran because Roberto wasn't a natural welterweight. Roberto showed several years later Pipino would have never lasted more than a few rounds with Duran at his peak in 1980. A nice guy and a good puncher but he was never a great fighter.

@@elchivato8147 This fight took place in April so it would have been unrealistic for Cuevas to make a title fight against Leonard in 4 weeks time like they were saying. Not surprisingly negotiations for their fight broke down & Leonard opted to fight Duran a couple of months later.

@@BAYBOSSMAN Pipino was a great champion with a big punch. But it is you who do not know anything. Pipino Cuevas was easy to hit and left himself open.
