What a magical hike! Follow us as we traverse to waterfalls through a bamboo forest in the Kipahulu District at Haleakala National Park (near Hana). The reward at the end is worth the 4 miles roundtrip! Not an extremely difficult hike, with build in boardwalks for the last 0.5 mile stretch. Pack a lunch for the end, a swimsuit if you want to cool off in the stream, and bug spray.
Haleakala National Park, Kipahulu entrance: means
“fetch from exhausted gardens”. This is a humid, rainy coastal climate. The park is home to more endangered species than any other NP. Open 9-5. Parking sometimes fills up by peak time 2pm.
•Pipwai Trail: entrance near MM 42. There are 2 trails: a lower trail to Ohe’o Gulch (1/2 mile to 7 sacred pools), and an upper trail which leads to the waterfalls.
The upper trail continues past sugar cane pulleys, to 200ft Makahiku Falls overlook. You will cross several bridges, traversing through a bamboo forest with a boardwalk leading to 400ft Waimoku Falls. 4 miles round-trip and 650’ in elevation gain, estimated 2-3hrs to hike.
