Martha Mödl's incomparably creepy Countess is the central feature in this Queen of Spades. Wiener Staatsoper LIVE 1992; Conductor - Seiji Ozawa. Tchaikovsky's Pique Dame/Queen of Spades
An important record of an international theatrical event. One year after the fall of the Soviet Union, a Russian tenor, an Italian soprano, and a Japanese conductor converge in Vienna with Martha Mödl. The performance is boiling with dramatic intensity. Atlantov is at his greatest, looking handsome and heroic, tender and involved with Freni. Young Vesselina Kasarova is at the beginning of her career, Mödl is at the end.
An interview with Martha Mödl follows the opera.

Атлантов - неповторимый, лучший Герман всех времен, он просто был рожден для этой партии! Всех других Германов меряю по его исполнению, он эталон! Хотя Отелло и Каваралосси у него тоже замечательные!

As Queen of Spades was unusual fare in the UK, I travelled to Vienna for this production. A regular opera-goer, I confess to not having heard of Martha Mödl. Her performance was spellbinding and the audience clearly loved her. The next day we found that she was celebrating her 85th birthday and 50 years since her début in the Vienna Opera House at its re-opening after WW2, singing in Fidelio. Despite the cuts, a wonderful historic record of a major opera star of the second half of the 20th century. The rest of the cast are pretty good too!

Mödl = genius. Amazing that she had that much physical discipline at 85 years old!

80 year-old Martha Modl......WOW! We're being treated!! She was a fantastic Kundry in Parsifal, especially the 1951 Knappertsbusch version I'd have loved to have been in Leiferkus' shoes in this performance. When Atlantov started singing "I don't even know her name" at 7:47, I'd have stopped being a member of the cast and just be another audience member enjoying his performance of this glorious Aria.

Одна из лучших постановок "Пиковой дамы", самая интересная по образам, драматизму и декору. Атлантов и Лейферкус - просто Цари на этой сцене!!!

Tchaikovsky's music are divine and the singing is fine if a bit rough at times. But why do we have to suffer so many productions of this gem of an opera that are NOT set in the 18th century??

maybe the kids were on school break? kidding. Although imagine that cheerful scene with those bloody blue lights they keep throughout the production. Come to think of it, it might have added to the general creepiness, which is what looks like they were going for anyway.
