Way back 2015, where Caravan art studio had just established itself with a dream of learning about film making on its own. A DSLR camera that we had made our belief strong to shoot a film. This turned out be a dream which did not have a script or subject back then. It was time where we wanted to give wings to our dreams but did not know how .
Mean time, we had seen a painting of Aati Kalenja, a folk dance of Dakshina Kannada. This disappearing folk form turned out to be a boon while we had no clue what to shoot. It began with a discussions and opinions on this topic, we researched about this concept. The experience we had during this research , made us realise that this tulu tradition is vanishing slowly. It was quite difficult to find people who were continuing this tradition.
By the time it was month of July exclusively the month of Aati Kalenja, would continue till the end of Aati. We decided to go to the location and walk along to shoot. We travelled to Dakshina Kannada with our cameras and began with our field research.
We communicated with some local Bhoothakola artists and local people, grabbed some information .This was the time when we met Mohan Sona sir, he explained the stories from his childhood about Aati Kalenja. And he joined us in watchig it live.
We met the Kalenja performers, began our walk along with them, and shot their entire activity of visiting homes in the village. As days passed, we started to gather more information and more footages about
this vanishing tradition “Aati Kalenja”. This documentary presented to you today has our dream, months of editing work, memories and most of all our disappearing Tulu tradition. Unravelling the unseen visuals, their pre stories and pre and post performance visuals and the beauty of our TULU CULTURE AND TRADITION .
Caravan art studio dreamt of this documentary 5 years ago , compiling all the information into 12 mins video.
