After all these years and the CGI for Davy Jones looks absolutely flawless

The compass pointing to Jack was a red herring. Elizabeth wanted the letters from Lord Beckett. Jack stuffed the letters in his jacket. Elizabeth even says "Jack, the letters, give them back" and Jack refuses. So when the compass points to Jack, it's actually pointing to the letters, not to Jack.

Notice when Jack is on the ship he walks normal but on land is when he sways, he has permanent sea legs

"Life is cruel.... Why should the after life be any different!" Bill Nighy was incredible as Davy Jones.

10:58 Bootstrap Bill was using leviathan more as an adjective than a noun. Leviathan can be used like that to describe something as really big and powerful, which is an apt description of the movie's Kraken.

This movie won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects. ❤ And was nominated for three others: Best Art Direction, Best Sound Editing, and Best Sound Mixing. :3

When this came out critics didn't like it but seeing your reactions tells you everything you need to know: a fun time filled with laughs

A lot of old ships did mount guns on the front and even at the back, but the firepower of such guns was tiny compared to full broadsides. There was a case of a ship with 68 pounder carronades (big, short cannons) at the front ramming into the back of another ship and firing canister shots (big shotgun shell type things) into it, killing a bunch of the crew as the projectiles ripped through the gun decks.

The Leviathan is usually a humongous whale-like creature, whilst the Karken is based on giant squids. Due to giant squids beings one of few things able to hunt some types of whale, they're often portrayed as enemies.

Simone with the “Too Many Cooks” shoutout! Now time to rewatch it for the millionth and one time. That could be a fun short reaction for George and then he will also have the song stuck in his head forever!😂

I absolutely love it when well-established Shakespearean actors get roles in blockbusters and go all-out ham. You can clearly tell they are enjoying every single moment of their performance. Especially noticeable when they get to play the villains. Case in point: Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa and Bill Nighy as Davy Jones.

This is the tale of Captain Jack Sparrow, pirate so brave on the seven seas. A mystical quest to the Isle of Tortuga, raven locks sway on the oceans breeze….

the stuff written down in the background details that never made it into the film has it that Jack bought that hat with one of the first two coins he ever stole as a pirate, and has kept it with him ever since. This goes a long way to explaining the weight of him leaving it behind at the start of the film. Although I feel the crew's reactions did the best they could with that without slowing the pace anyway

If you two thought "Dead Man's Chest" was wild... wait until you watch "At World's End!" That movie is so freaking wild! So much happens, that your head will literally explode, if you try to think it all through, the first time around! I had to watch that sequel roughly a dozen times to get down every single detail, and I am not exaggerating when I say that! It's such a great conclusion to what should have been a trilogy of movies (I refuse to accept that there are two other pirates movies after AWE, because those two are major letdowns compared to part 3).

One of my favorite trilogies of all time (4 & 5 don’t count lol) can’t wait for the next movie, great reaction as always! And yeah Davy Jones cgi is impeccable along with a massively underrated performance from Bill Nighy!

Simone, the guns on the front (and rear) of fighting sailing ships were pretty standard. They are called chasers as you only used them when chasing or being chased by another ship. 😊

To anyone that may not have noticed the detail, the people crying and carrying candles to mourn Jack's passing, outside Tia's hut at the end of the film, were the people that Jack helped escape from slavery when he worked under the East India Trading company. That's what got him kicked out and branded a Pirate by the very people he used to work for. He makes a brief mention of it in the third film when he says to Cutler Beckett, "People aren't cargo, mate".

Apparently the cast at the end where told Zoe Saldana was coming down the stairs. Their reaction to Geoffrey Rush was genuine .

I guess we will need George reacting to Too Many Cooks now :D Yes, these Pirate Movies hold up damn well, the effects were certainly improved.

Just to be clear, Elizabeth was never considering Jack, he just fascinated her because she desired the freedom and adventure that pirates always represented to her. She teases him as a way to get his cooperation, kisses him to kill him, even when the compass pointed at him both times it was a misdirect because it was pointing to something he had on him or something he was standing on. It was always Elizabeth and Will, though obviously they knew what they were doing with the implications.

Simone *consistently* has all the best shirts.

I swear nearly every one of the T-shirts Simone wears are bands I loved in the 90's. So glad some of the younger generation have great taste in music

This was the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie I saw in theaters. I remember leaving in tears and changing my phone wallpaper to "I love Jack Sparrow

"Pirates" is a great entry for it's genre.

Just a heads up: The third movie has one of the rawest openings, not only in the whole franchise but in cinema history.

This is one of those sequels where a lot of things work for me. Davy Jones is still one of my top 5 "cool villains". Will gets more depth through story arch. Norrington literally SHOWS a story arch (they went with his fall from grace as a commodore and made him "Edgy/outlaw" - Norrington. Which ... to me makes him more human and more interesting) And they set up characters for the next movie. It absolutely worked for me, this movie.

This entire trilogy is so brilliant, and only now do I realise how many dead man's chests there are! First, obviously, the actual chest with the heart, then Davy Jones' locker (which is it's own kind of chest), then Jones' physical empty chest (symbolic for the heart and love), and finally at the very beginning of this film, the coffin Jack escapes the prison from as well as the empty grave he falls in! Which in turn is absolutely amazing foreshadowing as to his final fate here.

“It seems a reasonable place to put one.” It absolutely is. They are called “bow chasers”, and typically fired as heavy a shot as any gun aboard, and usually had longer barrels for more velocity and range. The equivalent guns firing aft from the stern were called “stern chasers”, naturally.

This is the one I feel had the best physical comedy, and the action set pieces were amazing.

Bill Nighy did a fantastic job as Davy Jones. And it was appropriate that George made the joke about the pub when they mentioned The World's End, considering Nighy played The Network (the disembodied voice at the end). And yes, I agree. Stellan Skarsgård is a real treasure. But I might be biased there, being Swedish myself. We usually have a little game whenever he's in a film, to spot where he slips a line of Swedish dialogue in. Unfortunately, Dead Mans Chest is one of the very few films where he doesn't.

20:00 she doesn't want Jack Norrington literally just said to her that she never wondered how Will ended up on the flying Dutchman so in that moment the thing she wanted most was to know who was responsible for that. And the compass pointed to Jack. What that meant she knows Will is on the Dutchman because of Jack.

The CGI in this movie looks better than some of the projects Disney (and Marvel, Star Wars, etc) has put out in the last couple years

Really happy to watch your reactions to this one. Love all the pirates movies, even the lesser ones, but I think this one is my favourite. Just look at how much they crammed into just this one film, from story line, dialogue, locations, set design, extras, cgi. Was so amazing watching it the cinema. Look forward to you watching the others as well.

My secondary school used to do a concert each year and as someone who was in both the orchestra and brass ensemble, we used to play the PoTC theme tune each year and it was so much fun. I was on the trumpet with a few mates and we had a blast every time.

One of the best things is that rolling mill wheel fight is like 90% practical. They actually ran atop a rolling wheel and fought.

I'm so invested in the intro now for a good laugh and George's confusion.

I remember "Too Many Cooks" -- I was not expecting to hear that at the beginning of this clip. A lot of folks were surprised when Hector returned at the end.

This is probably my absolute favorite action adventure movie. Amazing plot, acting, choreography, CGI, and of course the music is phenomenal. The giant wheel set piece is one of my favorite action moments ever

Jack Davenport (James Norrington) is such an underrated actor.

It's always interesting going back and watching older stuff, and recognise actors you know from more recent stuff you've watched. 6:21 is the guy who plays the Abbott in season 2 of The Last Kingdom.

The Black Spot is what amounts to a death mark, serving as notice that everyone has instructions to kill you. I remember it showed up (in a less preternatural form) in Stevenson's "Treasure Island."

"Why don't we see more guns on the front of a ship?" There are a couple reasons. One, the space required for a cannon to fire is considerable and it required a few people to be standing on both sides of it. But the biggest reason is that a ship is most vulnerable to cannon fire in the front and in the back. A cannonball raking across a ship lengthwise is devastating, since its hull is least reinforced that way. If a ship has to take damage, it prefers to take it on its sides where it's most reinforced. So a ship with its largest guns facing forwards means it's making itself extremely vulnerable when aiming.

The best scene in this movie is the Liar's Dice scene that happens aboard the Flying Dutchman. It's hard to understand the first time but once you know what's going on, you realise just how brilliant it is. The channel 'Lord Ravenscraft' has a great breakdown of the scene, explaining how each of the players makes moves consistent with their characters and motivations. Essentially Bootstrap is playing badly and honestly, like he wants to lose, which, he does. His goal is not to win, but to spare Will. Davy Jones openly and confidently lies on the first turn, drawing out Will's dice and backing him into a corner. Will, backed into a corner with nowhere to go, then bids 8 fives. He has to, because Will's motivation is not to win, but to get the key. Will knows that if he wins, Davy Jones would just lock him in the brig, or throw him overboard or simply kill him immediately. His only option is to steal the key at a later date. This means that both Turner men are not trying to win. Davy Jones thinks he has them backed into a corner, but they've both won before the game has even started. Also notice how Davy Jones and Will roll their dice, then Bootstrap puts his in, off to the side. Bootstrap literally places himself between Will and Davy Jones.

If Simone could download her laugh in an app that would be a great text tone. Lol such a funny giggle and laugh. Love it.

When Will says he’s there to settle Jack’s debt I like Jones asked again like “D-did I just hear you right?”

I got to travel to Dominica back in 2014.. where they filmed a bunch of this movie. Such a beautiful country.

One of the best things about this film is the “Jar of Dirt Scene” was not scripted with Jack tripping. Johnny Depp actually fell down the stairs and kept going. And also the cast DID NOT know that Geoffrey Rush was coming back as Barbosa. That was a genuine reaction of shock.

The Davy Jones CGI was so good, I didn’t realize until after I had seen the movie that he was played by Bill Nighy.

I turned leeward in time to see the mast fall on me midshipman's legs, and he let out a scream that could be heard all the way down in Davy Jones' Locker. Mickey Dolenz's Locker too. And Peter Tork's Locker. All the Monkees had lockers....

This film was a massive deal on the VFX front, and won Industrial Light and Magic the Oscar for best VFX (the first time they’d won since Forrest Gump, and they haven’t won again since!). They scored some pretty big breakthroughs on this film - one was creating the first real on-set motion capture system that could be used on location, and the second was Davy Jones himself. On set they had Bill Nighy wear some make-up around his eyes and mouth, with the idea of perhaps using them in the final character if they weren’t able to capture his performance closely enough in CG… but their efforts were so successful that in the final film, he’s 100% synthetic. Stunning work, and the best CG character since Gollum. I remember reviews at the time mentioning the make-up effects on Davy Jones, as many people thought he was real. ILM did a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff to clue people in! Another thing I remember was hearing the writers, Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio, saying that when they were given the first film they threw every piratey thing in that they could, as they thought it would be the one and only chance that they had to do an actual pirate movie (prior to the first PotC movie coming out, pirates were thought to be box office poison thanks to the spectacular failure of Cuthroat Island). Then the film was a huge hit and they were immediately asked to write not one, but two sequels. Eeek! Fortunately they did a decent job in scrabbling together enough stuff to make a new story that felt like a natural continuation of the first, adding to the mythos and paying homage to all the favourite moments from the original. Really looking forward to seeing what this dynamic duo thinks of number 3!

I love the first three. I bought the set for my folks and it ran everyday, all the time. It's a little sadder watching it now with just a step-dad since my mother passed recently, but it's still an amazing ride. 🐾🐾🍻

There is a deleted scene in the 3rd movie that sort of explains the 100 souls thing, what happened to Jack's ship before it was the Pearl and is a call back to the first movie when he says 1 good deed is enough to condemn a man as a pirate.

The Too Many Cooks guy is the one that gives Kevin Hart the cake that makes him explode in Jumanji WttJ.
