This pain have been disturbing for the past 6-7 years. I just did the stretch you said, and believe me, I haven't felt like this in years. Won't say the pain is gone, but the relief has given a lot of hope ❤️ Thank you very very very much❤️
Appreciate video content! Excuse me for chiming in, I would appreciate your thoughts. Have you ever tried - Parlandealey Leaving Pain Process (erm, check it on google should be there)? It is an awesome one of a kind guide for learning how to cure Sciatica without the headache. Ive heard some super things about it and my GF at very last got cool results with it.
A while back I started oil painting and the seat I had was quite hard. After several months I would have really deep and even sharp pains on both sides of my pelvis. It felt like the cushions were gone and I was riding on bone alone. I cant stand too much because of peripheral neuropathy. Now the big problem is when I drive. The pain is unbearable immediately. So I have found a couple (including this one) videos that have similar solutions.and I've had sciatica, pain down to my foot recently.and surgery for a herniated disc 50 years ago. Thank you.

Thanks for the information on the piriformis muscle and referring to the pain and tests to determine if a person has this syndrome. The exercises are worth doing to get the relief in the buttock area. Thanks once again. Elizabeth Ratliff
@Fam Eight ... to be very honest, I don't know. I tend to not worry much about this type of stuff, but take it as a personal opinion, not as a medical advice. Follow your doctor's recommendation, I would say...
I suffer from chronic pain since late 2018. It started off as a knee pain and it kept on escalating to the hip, glute and lower back. It's a shooting pain that gives BURNING sensation and pins and needles. Sometimes my right leg feels numb and heavy. It fluctuates with activities. But basically, pain gets worse with sitting for too long or driving, or standing for too long, lying on the right side for too long, walking for too long. I completely stopped exercising early 2020 because it was making it worse. Symptoms manifest more like nerve impingement issue, however, x-rays and scans can't detect anything wrong on my body, except for the lost of disc height of L5-S1, which I've been told that it's normal. I've done blood tests, they can't see anything wrong. I am living with the pain every second of my life. I've been to a Chiropractor, 2 physiotherapists, 2 biokineticist, orthpaedic, 2 neurosurgeons, Homeopath, and a Sports physician. They all have been trying, but nothing has helped so far. If I try their recommended exercises, the pain gets worse, it's like I'm burning, I can't even fall asleep. I've tried countless supplements and other meds. None has worked. At some point it affected me mentally. Do you have any opinion with this condition?
Hey dear… I’m sorry that you’re in so much pain! My first reaction was indeed to say: get an mri. If you have done so already, we need to have an in-depth discussion… send me an a email to ogirard (at) trainyourposture.com and we’ll find a suitable time for a zoom call.

Thanks for the video, My problem starts with my right leg: pain, tingling, numbness not so much when I'm sittibg but especially when driving. Your explanation and suggested remedy will be highly appreciated.
@@Shivam-rf6th to cut a long story short, it's sitting too bad for too long or standing too bad for too long. Among others: it can also be due to disc hernia, car accident, etc.
@@OlivierGirard sir from yesterday i am doing the exercise you suggested taking a gap.....but its still paining.....how much time did the pain remains?
@@Shivam-rf6th If I knew... you know, it depends very much on 1) your condition 2) how you stretch 3) what else you do to remove the causes of your pain. If pain has been lasting for months, it's not likely to disappear overnight - counting in weeks seems more reasonable. When you stretch, make sure that you don't cause any pain (i.e. don't pull too much) but hold it for a minute. And really, make sure that you remove the causes: replacing slouching by sitting on your sitting bones, against the lumbar support, and get up every 20-30 min...
I have suffered with recurring piriformis syndrome for years now, when I get a painful debilitating attack the best relief is to walk it off, sitting around doing nothing makes it worse and longer lasting.
Thank you! I’m going through this pain from a tennis injury, deep tissue massage, 7 hour drive, and then a 6 hour fight back to back. Appreciate the info!
Excellent videos and advice. I've been living abroad for 2 years not driving and have recently moved back home and started driving my old VW Golf which is manual, with slight bucket seats (I'm quite tall). My sciatica from PS has got much worse, which has been interesting to see the cause and affect so clearly. I've had PS for years, but whilst abroad and not driving it had got considerably better. Would you recommend certain cars for those suffering with this nerve pain? Are manual or automatics better? And are cars with more upright seats where your legs are at a right-angle better? Thank you!
My doctor told me I had P S probably over 10 years ago and this is excellent.I still have muscle spasms on right side mainly and I had dry needing for the spasms. That was the first relief I had in years, after PT multiple times.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I wish I knew this 10 years ago! I just spent two days barely able to move. After tens massage, heat and your stretch, I'm up and walking like normal! Magic!
This helps so much I’ve been losing sleep because of this. At first it was hard pin pointing where the pain was coming but after trying the stretch immediately there was relief god bless you

I was just stretching like this due to pain in my lower back. Then pain radiated to the side of my buttocks. Now im searching why I’ve pain here and what stretches can I do. Lol and your video shows the same stretch I was originally doing because it felt good. 😊
Thank you for the information. I just had this pain just today after I practiced handstand hold on a wall and other exercises like assisted one arm pull then tucked front lever. Then suddenly I had pain in my butt and hips on the left area. I had a discomfort while walking. Then I tried the strectching part of the video, and somehow it alleviates the pain. Had this problem for just on one year. This exercise carried out by a private hospital physiotherapist put me on my back for a week and in worse pain. Beware people who do not fully appreciate someone’s real problems.
Nice, feel a lot better after applying heat and doing the stretch. Does the disc go back in to place it self, do I need surgery? Iv been told by the doctors that it goes back in to place it self, and how long does it take to do so?
Hey Yasar! I'm answering to both your questions in the same message. Disc herniation can get better by itself, provided that 1) it's not too severe / unstable yet (i.e. that it cannot unexpectedly cause spine cord damage - only doctors can assess this with an MRI) 2) you do what's necessary to resolve the issue. To help you with this, I have published this video on my protocol to treat disc hernias: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jbV2s3o0VoQ.html Reg. how long it takes to get better: there's unfortunately not universal answer to this. It depends on where we start from, how disciplined you are in your self-treatment and the improvement of your working / living conditions, on your conditions, etc. Hence, I always have the same advice for my patients: focus on the process, it's the best that you can do. Forget the outcome for a while, even though I know it's super difficult...
@@OlivierGirard no, I just love music and concerts. I'm an engineer, so sitting all day at work. And I've squatted with this pain and it got worse. I guess my back is better now after 5 days, thank God! 🙂 And now I have just the pain I had before, through the hip.
Hello Olivier Thank you for sharing, really helped a lot , got few questions for you, how often we have to do to get rid of the pain permanently, does it go permanently if we take care? , sitting can’t be escaped so what things we have to consider while sitting Thank you
Hey Latchi, Giving a time frame is unfortunately very difficult, because it's so multifactorial. Usually I go around the question and answer that the only thing I know is: the better you behave, the quicker it will get better... no that satisfactory I understand, but I can't be both honest and more precise 😅 In terms of sitting, I'd say that what's essential is that - you always sit on your sitting bones, against the lumbar support (see this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PYm2ZULnwdQ.html) - you stand very often (see this other video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jiOFLYKKigU.html) - your goal is to not sit for more than 30 min a row! Does this answer make sense?
Hello. I have a muscle atrophy in my right leg below knee due to GBS. Request you to make a video on all the muscles related to it and how to regain the lost muscle. This will help me alot
Hello dear... With this type of condition, I would not work on muscle strengthening: it's not the best idea, in my opinion. But I would work a lot on proprioception (=body awareness), i.e. not very impressive exercises that you carry out slowly, with the greatest precision and concentration. This will foster neuroplasticity and help you use your muscles in a more balanced way. The best exercise I know for this is here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-H4UL_uQ9jsI.html. It has helped a lot of people with neurological condition, provided that they learned how to focus their mind and train slowly...
Where is your office located. I have severe sciatic nerve pain that radiates from my right side lower back, all of the way down through my gluteus, groin, hamstrings, back of knee, calf, and foot, all on the right side. It has gotten much worse as I do more and more physical therapy, deep tissue massage, stretching, and strength training. I now carry a tennis ball with me everywhere that I go, to use whenever I sit(which causes discomfort) and in my car seat while I drive. I just started moving my deep tissue technique over to the opposite side, on the left lower vertebrae, where I feel no pain, to see if it could be the origin of a nerve impingement.
Hey James, sorry for the late reply... crazy week. I'm based in Switzerland, but I work solely online with private people. If you'd like to book an initial chat, just send me a mail to ogirard@trainyourposture.com ;)!
Hey dear! The paperback version is only in French. But if you purchase the book (www.theposturemanual.com) it comes as a clean pdf, so that you can freely print it. Thanks for your interest in it!!
Interesting. I always thought my sciatica and piriformis pain was caused by a deep tissue sports massage following a back injury from weights and you’ve confirmed it.
If you look at the comments, you'll see another lady at least who reports having had the pain following long hours sitting on a plastic chair: same principle (excessive pressure)...
It depends, dear. If sciatic pain is due to the piriformis muscle, it is. If the pain is due to a disc herniation, a better approach is this one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uzBW45IGaI4.html

Burning/Numbness in upper glute, doesnt go anywhere else. Had a lower back injury from leg press which this pain stemmed from. Lower back has healed but burning in glute is bad especially when sitting on couches and after sitting for a long time. Numbness can be intermittent some days there some days it isn't. What should I be doing to help it?
Hi Kathleen, excellent point, I forgot to shoot this other video! The spray and stretch technique is basically about spraying a cold spray on a muscle in the direction of the fibers (I have good experience with the Perskindol yellow, if available in your country), stretching it for a minute and then applying moist heat (the best is the gel packs that you microwave and apply on the skin through a wet cloth). Do you see what I mean? An example is here: www.nielasher.com/blogs/video-blog/73449605-trigger-point-therapy-spray-and-stretch-techniques

Hi Oliver can you tell me what happened to me? Or what I should do? I feel pain on my right buttock around the hip area and it is excruciating pain too. I can't put any pressure on it and it feels heavy too. I extracted it from a small fall and I'm not sure if it is serious or not as I have a run tomorrow?
Well, I’m a week past having a TKR & to add insult to injury, I hurt my back doing my physio 🙄🙈. So now I’m in pain from knee operation, & struggling to do my exercises even more, plus I have numbness & pins & needles too! All the videos I’ve watched do these stretches, but due to knee I can’t do that 🤷🏻♀️ could cry with frustration (& pain) Should add, I have osteoarthritis in my back .......ANY advice? 🙏
Hi Marco, what you describe isn't typical, no... I show two movements at 1'05, and you can also try another one: you sit on your chair with your heels under the knees, approx. 20 cm from each other, and your spread your knees to the sides whilst keeping your feet where they are. Does any of these 3 things worsen what you feel?
Hey Sir! To recognize pain that is due to muscles, I like to use this website: www.triggerpoints.net/. Use the map tab to search by area, and if you recognize one or more of the pain patterns, let me know. Check in particular the lumbar area: www.triggerpoints.net/symptom/lumbar-pain :)
Its killing me for over 2momths now, covid19 gave room for sitting longer on plastic chairs and its killing me...i have stretched over and over but needs you to elaborate the heat you talk about...how do I apply the heat to my butts???
Indeed, plastic chairs are exerting direct pressure on your tissues, and that can be like what I call "too strong massage" in the video. In that sense, I'm not 100% sure that heat will resolve the issue: try and think how you can organize your day so as to break down the sitting periods so as to never sit for more than 25 min in a row, and how you can soften the chairs (cushion, etc.). Reg. heat now. The idea is that you buy a moist heat pack (e.g., on this pic: post.greatist.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Treating_Pain_with_Heat_and_Cold-732x549-thumbnail_0.jpg). Either you take a disposable one, or a one that you can put in the microwave. Don't take it too big... because you'll have to wear boxer shorts and put the heat pack in the underwear :) Whilst you use it, you should stand or lie down, but I suspect that sitting on it could break it, which can create a serious risk of skin burn. Makes sense?
I'm going through this my lower back burns if I sat to long the pain goes down my right glute and down my hamstring if i was to sit on anything hard even the toilet I've been going to my Chiropractor for neck issues he's been massaging deep into the glute muscles where I really feel it but it's the pain afterwards that affects me, contracts so bad it burns i can't sit or walk properly feel so unstable for days is he doing the right thing or is he making it worse?
I think he's making it worse, dear... I have actually seen cases of piriformis syndrome following "deep massage". Rule of the thumb is: if pain lasts for more than 3 days, something's wrong. I wouldn't let him do this anymore, honestly.
@@OlivierGirard yes the pain lasted more then 3 days made me very unstable or to do anything I even had to ice that entire area for the last 4 to 5 days because of the pain and for me to be able to sit while it's numb... what are your advice in order for me to follow through that I'm willing to try because honestly I'm very determine to try anything to fix this issue I'm having
@@mentalhealthmatters9233 the plan of action should be the following, I think: - remove the causes (=oil on the fire): sit well (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TOd_e5iZ9tM.html) but never for more than 30 min a row. The seat should be padded and give you a good lumbar support; - try stretching the piriformis muscle (if too much pain, check out these variants: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kmaJI-7Zfuw.html), especially after shower. If it does not work, you may have to consider an EMS device (that will be today's video😉) In this area, it usually takes quite some time... consistency is key!
Unfortunately doing this type of exercise makes the arthritis in my hip much worse to the point I then have difficulty walking. I need an alternative exercise.
Hi Marion. This is a very good point. I dont' know any stretching the piriformis that does not put the hip into a weird angle, to be honest. It's basically due to where the muscle attaches. In your case, my approach would be to test an EMS system (basically very small electric shocks to contract / relax the muscle until it stays relaxed). I have explained it in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RDoOxtdW3H4.html, and my advice would be that you try this device: www.bluetens.com/en/. Does this help?
I have piriformis syndrome and had my chair backrest slightly tilted backward. I have now changed to be either straighter and increased the inflatable lumbar support. This has caused to take some pressure off my piriformis and more on back of top of thigh. Hopefully this will help me.
yep... and remember 2 more things when you sit: - get up very often: cf my recent post on the community tab - don't let your knees move outwards: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-llXTtAc7hM4.html (also in the car!)
You say to apply heat. I have been using ice packs to freeze my hip. When it’s froze, I no longer feel the pain. (Until my hip thaws) please advise. Thank you for your video
I haven't much experience with it, but my first opinion would be: why not. PROVIDED THAT you find someone who's really good at it, because it's a tricky place to go: the sciatic nerve is just around the corner...
I’ve suffered from this pain for over 15 years now. How often should I do these stretches and how many reps per set? I’m hoping this will help me to sit comfortably for the first time in years
If you work hard on fixing the causes of pain, stretching more than 3x per day (1 min each side) should be enough. 1 rep per set. It's not a matter of reps, but really a matter of fixing the origin of the pain...
@@karenjulieattard4171 : actually yes... you could try (very gently!) the exercises that I show at the end of this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sTwDEmFY654.html. Especially the one where I'm lying on the side (5'15'' onwards). That's because strong adductors helps avoiding a number of positions that strain the piriformis.
I am feeling pain in left leg from my joint and very intense at the back of my knee. And I discovered I am bending towards the side. Taking a lot of drugs as recommended yet not gone. Kindly advice How do I regain my posture and pain free? Thanks
Thank you sooo much. Yes, I went the PT complaining of lower left butt pain. He thinks it’s my lumbar that’s causing the pain and diagnosed me w/ spondylosis since I’m 64 yo without considering piriformis syndrome. Before the pandemic I teach online English and was seated on a hard wooden chair for 5 hrs. w/o breaks. Now, its clear what I have. They say ice is better than heat...I’m confused but I value your opinion. God bless you Dr.!
Great that you gained some clarity, Angie! Reg. heat vs cold there are general rules (cold against inflammation and heat against contraction), but there are also exceptions indeed. So best is to start with one option, and to try the other one if it doesn’t help 😅
