Piscifun is a Chinese company that manufactures and sells fully Machined reels. Many people wonder just how good of quality these reels are being made in China. I can contest to the fact that they are very good quality reels. They are CNC Machined and with good quality machining and aluminum. I have been using them for a while, and I like them. That being said, there are some drawbacks and problems with some of their reels, but for the cost of purchasing them vs other reels out there on the market, I think these drawbacks are something easy to deal with. I like these reels, and have no problem fishing them, even when quality counts. I would go fish large fish that demand a good reel without hesitation. Does that mean they are the best reels on the market? No! Not even close, but they are the best reels when considering their cost. Anything you get that is even close to their quality, will cost you 2-3 times the money. In some cases, even more!
So if you are looking for a great priced reel that will serve you well, the Piscifun Sword (or some of their other models) will work great for you! If you are looking for the best of the best, than maybe you should look elsewhere.
I want you guys to know that I am not getting money from Piscifun, and I am not swayed by them in any way in making this video. This is coming strictly from a consumer opinion, and therefor you are getting the full and honest review of this reel.

I like you point with these reels. Really valid argument. I’ve been planning out building a 4 wt and these reels are good cheap alternative. My starter reel was one of these reels and I never had an issue with it

Yeah, rods are most important. This is a great beginner reel for someone not wanting to spend a lot. Focus on the rod, not the cost of the reel.

Over the past week, I've used the Sword II 5/6 reel and caught 200+ trout. I agree with your assessment that the drag tends to loosen up after a couple of hours of fishing. That's somewhat annoying, but can be dealt with by occasionally checking for the condition. However, when properly adjusted, the drag is smooth and helped me land five trout in the 3 lb. range on my 10 ft. 3-weight euronymphing rod. All-in-all it's a pretty good reel. It's not as good as the $300 American-made reel on my other rod, but for the $48 that it cost me at Alibaba, it's a quality reel at a bargain price that does the trick for me.

Yeah I hear ya. Small price to pay for such a decent setup for well under $100 I think. Btw, they are coming out with a new rod soon. I’m not a big fan of their current sword rod honestly, but I do like their new one. It’s not for sale yet, but look for it. You will like it!

Thanks for the video! This was my first "new to me" reel I ever purchased. I'd rather spend more money on our son than myself, so I went the budget route and picked up this 3/4 reel to pair up with a nice 3 weight rod. That was over 10 years ago now, if memory serves...since then, I've bought more for myself (in different sizes) and a few for others. Everyone (myself included) adores them. I've landed *hundreds of trout on the 3/4 over the years. It works well from tiny creeks all the way up to mountain lakes, from 4" parr to 24" browns. It feeds line beautifully. I've never experienced the drag issue yo mention, but that's probably because I leave the drag off most of the time and just use my palm. :) I will occasionally add a teeny bit of drag if line is feeding too quickly, but that's it. Lots of wonderful memories with this reel!

For the money it’s hard to beat for sure! Lately they have had some quality control issues and not standing by the product though. Check out Risen fly next time you order. I stopped using piscifun because if the issues in recent years and switched to risen. Risen is a little more expensive but great warranty (lifetime) and they have wonderful customer service with very high quality reels for a really good price. American company also.

Thanks for the excellent review. I suspect there's a huge cost difference in CNC machining in US vs China and hence a significant price difference American vs China-made reels. My concern is the quality of the aluminum used as well as any subsequent heat treating and anodizing. I did buy a "fully-machined" China-made reel and with one accidental drop the frame bent out of round. That said I do like Piscifun products and I'm going to risk $70 for a Sword II based on your review. We'll see. Thanks Angler!
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 6 лет назад
Yeah the sword 1 was cheaper aluminum I think. The 2 seems more solid. I know what you mean though. As for the cost difference, yeah! Workers in America need 12.50/hour to survive, in China they are happy with 20 cents. So that’s where the cost difference is. And just like American companies, the specific company makes a difference. Quality varies vastly and I’ll be honest that I’ve had some terrible Chinese made products as well. But these are good.

I'm looking at getting a 6wt in the future and you've sold me on the Piscifun reels. I've seen them on Amazon but there seems to be an infinite amount of cheap fly reels on there. Glad to know that these are high quality and a good value, plus, as others have said, I would rather put more money in a rod and fly line. People see made in china on things and immediately write it off without even trying it. The company and their quality control is more important than where it comes from. No one minds paying Apple $1,000+ for an iphone made in China, or a couple thousand dollars for a huge fancy TV that was probably made in Taiwan or something. There are absolutely products made in China that are complete junk, but that doesn't mean that just because it's made in America that the company can't also make junk products. It all comes down to materials, the company, and their quality control. And I don't mean to malign American made products and American companies, I just find the irony of it all funny. Thanks again for the review!
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 5 лет назад
Glad to help! And if your going a 6wt I highly recommend upgrading to the crest if you can. The drag is much better for those larger fish. But that depends on the fish your going after. Yes there are a lot of cheap reels available. I haven’t used any of the other ones except the piscifun. But I can say the piscifun has been good for me. However a few subscribers said that theirs had some gear issues. But only 2-3, and I know a lot of my subs got them.
@Dhayes94
@Dhayes94 5 лет назад
My 6wt would most likely be my designated smallmouth rod but occasionally swinging big streamers for browns if I get the chance (which isn't very often). I've had some decent sized small mouth and large rainbows give me a good fight but I never had them peeling line off my drag so the sword 2 might be good for the waters I fish, but I'll look into the Crest as well. Thanks again!

I own a Crest and have a sword 2 on the way. I inquired how to purchase a spare spool for the Sword 2 and Tina at Piscifun sent me a message telling me that they do not have spare spools. You seem to know about this company. Any thoughts?
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 6 лет назад
Well I only know about them because I use their products a lot. Haha. I’ve talked with them about issues and stuff, with warranty. I did inquire about the spare spools, and they said they don’t have them yet. So I sent a lengthy email about how important it is to sell spare spools for reels. They said they made them for the sword 1, but haven’t yet for the 2. So I told them that they should get them, and it will help there sales tremendously. They agreed and said they were looking making them as quickly as they can. So keep a lookout. They might have some

As for getting the Sword 2 wet, the Amazon Sword 2 info page shows a picture of the Sword 2 submerged in water.
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 4 года назад
Lol, just cause it shows that doesn’t mean you should. So, I like this reel, not knocking it or anything. But when you submerge it in water, the drag loosens up. So if your fighting a fish, and dunk it, the drag will loosen and you will have to fight it without drag. Or try and tighten the drag mid fight. Once it dries out it seems to go back to original strength. But the reel is not fully sealed and dunking it many times can result in ruining the drag for good. Just FYI
@steve735
@steve735 4 года назад
@@McFlyAngler I agree, I would never do that to a reel intentionally. Just odd Amazon would include that pic.
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 4 года назад
Well it’s not amazon including it, it’s piscifun... they are probably the sellers and took that picture. They are decent reels but for $50 you gotta know some things just aren’t perfect. They might take pretty pictures and post them, maybe even trying to get you to buy their stuff because you see that and think it’s submergable, but they should say on the listing there that it’s not a sealed drag. In that instance, you should never dunk it.

@@McFlyAngler Thanks! I can't decide between these two, Loop Q and Lamson Liquid for my 5wt hardy deamon for trout fishing. as I can see the two more known brand aren't machined(but I don't know if that is a good or a bad thing..). @McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 4 года назад
No worries man. Those brands make good reels. But yes they aren’t machined. Machined reels tend to be lighter, nicer, smoother and stronger. But in reality, majority of fly fishing for trout will not need these extra features. For name brand reels you will probably not find anything fully machined for less than $200. I could be wrong, but usually that’s about the price mark I find the change from cast to machined. Another company you might want to check out is risen fly rods. I’ve started working with them and they are offering everyone that is my subscriber 15% off. They have some really nice reels. In fact for $155 (after the discount) you could get their fully machined gideon reel. Which is one of the nicest reels I’ve ever used. It’s really really nice! But they have some cast reels that are under $100. I think they have a machined reel that would be $130 or so. Every price I am saying is after discount. Anyway, go check out www.risenfly.com

Regarding the problem with the drag knob occasionally loosening, I think I may have found something worth exploring. On the exploded parts diagram that came in the box with my Sword II reel, it shows an O-ring underneath the drag knob. I removed the drag knob on my reel to find that mine is missing the O-ring, which may be the cause of the slippage. Unfortunately, my diagram does not specify the ring's size, so I have contacted AliExpress' Piscifun store to see if they can provide me with the info so I can buy it locally. To send the reel all the way back to China and await its replacement would undoubtedly take 3-5 months. For what it's worth, while researching the issue, I found an older exploded parts diagram via Google images that showed the Sword II reel without an O-ring. Perhaps Piscifun's engineering team knew about the problem and added an O-ring to eliminate slippage. I'll have to wait and see once I add an O-ring to the reel.

Yeah they are good for Chinese made. The thing about Chinese made products is they usually send their junk to us because Americans don’t want to spend much money on something perceived as junk. But China does have the ability to make good quality stuff. American made usually is gonna be better though, but you pay much more for it. Even so, this company since I’ve made this video had kinda lowered their quality in my understanding. Last few years their quality control has been pretty bad. I did find a new company that actually is an American brand that makes great quality rods and reels called Risen Fly. Check them out, great prices and they have great quality and quality control as well. Www.risenfly.com

Dead on....spend your money on the rod....for many applications the reel is a line holder, nothing more. I have 3 Picifun reels and have been pleased.

Piscifuns rods are great too. Now I don’t own any of their fly rods I do own one of their casting rods for bass and I have nothing to say but good things. Super sensitive, comfortable to use, and seems very well built especially for the price. I would think the quality would transfer to their fly rods

I have the Sword as well as the Platte fly .. both 9/10 wt. never had any problems with these reels … for the price,… you can’t go wrong…! Yeah, those high end reels are very nice but at the end of the day… the function of the reel is to hold your line … basically,.. you’re hand lining your fish most of the time … mine are setup for saltwater fishing for Stripers mostly and casting big nasty flies…. Anyways,… if you’re using any reel in saltwater,.. you should rinse in warm water and dry it after each use and you should be fine…. Be good to your gear and your gear will be good to you…! 👍😎🤙
