Pistol and Revolver “Main Spring”: Why is it called that? How does it work?

Many times terminology is held over in our language from earlier times. We still “hang up” the phone even though it typically now just goes back into a pocket, and if we’re going to call someone we still “dial” them up even though the phone doesn’t have a dial anymore.
The main spring in a semiautomatic pistol is another such term that, for people who don’t have experience with revolvers, might seem a bit odd. The recoil spring is bigger and drives the action, so shouldn’t it be called the “main” spring?
In this video we look at why the term “main spring” is used for the spring which drives the hammer by looking at the SIG P210 and the Colt Python and how the term originated in revolver mechanics and makes perfect sense in that context.

Interesting. So the same spring that drives the hammer returns the trigger. So now I can see why when people put a lighter spring in to make the trigger easier to pull it also affects the hammer and they can start getting light strikes.

Yup. Springing is actually fairly complicated sometimes. There’s some interesting quirks. One of the most interesting is actually on Glocks. An extra power striker spring can actually cause “light strikes” because it works against the recoil spring excessively and causes a slight out of battery condition. Pistol gets a bit old and maybe has a light strike, and someone decides to swap in a new striker spring or even an extra power one but doesn’t change the recoil spring at the same time and suddenly the problem actually becomes worse. It’s kind of weird.

Hi Colter. I really enjoy your python videos. I installed the Wilson Combat Python rear and front sights today. Have you seen them?

I have seen them online but haven’t handled them yet in person. They definitely look nice. How do you like them?

@@ColterBrog they are really nice. I’m 72 so I get a much better sight picture. Red dot for the front.

@@tombutler7408 On the P210 shown in this video I put on a set of 10-8 sights with the fiber optic front. It really makes it pop out. I’ve always liked a bright front sight.
