That's why NOBODY deserves to be called Iceman....except George.Got the name because while other players were drenched in sweat he was just barely breaking one.
Pistol STILL holds the NCAA record for ppg at 44.2 WITHOUT the 3 point basket..AND holds the total points at close to 4,000. And freshmen weren’t allowed to play on the Varsity. Watching him in person for the Jazz was GREAT! And then we have “Iceman.” Earl Strom asked Gervin once if the ball felt inflated enough. Gervin says “A ball’s a ball” and proceeded to score 42 points!
I read somewhere that they went back to all the scoring sheets and super imposed the 3 point line and only marked shots the were clearly behind the line. They said if he had the 3 point rule his scoring average would have been more than 60 points a game over the 3 years he played.
That is what HORSE is about. If you want a fucking shooting contest, just play Around-the-World. Figures that someone with Curry on their ID wouldn't understand real skill when they see it.
I think they should have a game of 21. Imagine back when AI, Kobe, and TMac were in their prime playing a game of 21. That would have been BADASS! Horse definitely would be more entertaining too.
"My daddy was a pistol so I'm a son of a gun" The Ice Man and Pistol Pete Maravich. Two of the very best basketball players to ever step on a court. Awesome, awesome video. Thank you for posting.👍
k m pistol kid style horse play sure seemed like he took it serious. Kinda weak he didn't just take the L istead of doing wigidy wack shots that wouldn't land if iceman was playing him 1 on 1..weak sauce.
Classic. Two legends here. Doesn't get much better than this. I do think this needs to come back to the all star game. This is playground stuff that everyone is familiar with. Why wouldn't this be in the all star game? Makes no sense.
+Andrew Scott Because today's players are scared to compete. Just look at the dunk contest for example. They only get newbies and marginal guys anymore. If they lose it might hurt their "brand."
I didn't even notice it till I read your comment. In the 70s, long, complicated handshakes were in vogue. Guys would wrap their hands every which way when they shook hands. I wish people still did that. It would sometimes get so absolutely ridiculous, even if they guys didn't like each other they'd wind up laughing together. That's a GOOD thing.
They did bring it back. I remember KD and Rondo playing against each other during All Star Weekend (not sure what year). They didn't take seriously enough so they took it away yet again.
Here's a memory like it was yesterday: I was a gangly, shy girl at Broughton in Raleigh in 1964. Walking down one of those gloomy halls, (Broughton was a reproduction of an Italian monastery) I noticed a very tall, also gangly boy coming my way. No sports fan, I didn't know him. But he looked right AT ME AND SUDDENLY THE HALL LIT UP WITH ONE OF THE MOST LOVELY GRINS I HAVE EVER BEEN BLESSED TO RECEIVE. I feel blessed because Pete was very shy around girls. But he made my day!! God bless you, Pete!!
Both legends, but does anyone else think it's stupid that Pete did the three of the same shots twice? I always played that you can't do a play more than once.
Ari Salomon bruh, Gervin did nothing but jumpers and bank shots. Not doing the same shot more than once ends up with some stupid shots left if both people keep making them.
Totally awesome competition between two great players! Man, just watching the Ice Man crank that jump shot brings back memories! Thanks for posting these, R M!
As a player from the same era, I applaud both of them as great shooters. I love the way they both went to and stuck with their strengths. Nothing fancy.
This is fantastic. They should do this now. Pistol Pete was something. He never quite had the pro career that he had in college. Still a great player. The Iceman is my favorite player of all time. He's why I started liking the Spurs. So smooth.
Eric Sloss Pete averaged 24 in the nba, a 5x all star and was the scoring champ once. Not to mention he was injured most of his career. Pretty spectacular if you ask me
Kind of like Joe Namath. A meteor who burst onto the scene, changed the game, blew everyones mind, and then burned out sooner than expected due to injuries. But in Namath's case he played a role in the biggest sports upset in history by winning Super Bowl 3.
@@Amick44 dude he was never healthy in his life. He had a severe heart defect and was considered his situation lucky to have made 40 with the stuff he did
I remember watching Gervin in warm-ups about an hour before game time back in 1977 at the old Capital Centre in Landover. He went through a variety of shots using both hands from 4 to 10 feet. I don't think he missed a shot in about 15 minutes. Most amazing thing I've ever seen.
Fun to watch. I had the good luck to see Gervin light up the Lakers for about 40 in person, and also went to a game in '76 when the Pistol went for 49 and New Orleans upset the reigning champion Warriors in OT. He must've gotten 20 in the 4th qtr and I think 8 in overtime. He was hitting the craziest shots and was simply unstoppable.
If this was (as the announcer said) just after George Gervin edged out David Thompson for the scoring title, then it must have been just after the 1977-78 season, when Pete Maravich got injured and was limited to about 50 games played. Nice to see he came back from that injury and was still skilled enough to win this HORSE match-up against the Iceman. They were among the best NBA guards of the time., But then, we also see why, even not counting for injuries, it was George Gervin who had the better all-round career as a shooting guard, with teams that regularly made the playoffs. All his shots here are basic jumpshots, bankshots, etc, which star players actually are expected to make in actual game competition. Whereas, Maravich's shots (like making baskets while sitting down, jumping from outside the court to make reverse lay-up, etc.) are great trick shots, but you won't really get many chances to take those kinds of shots in an actual NBA game, and if you try, your coach is going to read you the riot act. Still, a salute to both legends of the game.
Yea both are legends. Kinda wack pistol resorted to circus play to win. Even if thats his bread and butter, making alotta goofy ass shots. Come time for legit shoot out match between 2 nba legends should have 0 globetrotter action. Takes away from the actual game.
@@leeellenwood5461 Why the hell are you lurking around this comment section; Can't you just enjoy this great piece of footage? You just bitch on every comment about how you think HORSE should be played as if you made the damn game.
REALITY CHECK: I'm a fan of both, but Gervin's shots were those you'd actually do in basketball while Pistol's were mostly weird tricks you try when you're ten years old, playing with your neighbor. Impressive tricks, but Gervin was doing more practical/relative basketball shots.
As kids we used to play this on our street. Loved watching guys like Maravich and Gervin play ball growing up, but Pete was my favorite. Used to see him play in the Superdome many times.
Pistol was so ahead of his time- if he were playing today with the decreased physicality, three point line, and increased pace, he’d be putting up James harden numbers
Wow, this brings back memories! Had lots of cool stuff like this when I was a kid that , sadly , you don’t and probably won’t ever see again due to the money factor and fear of hurting your “ brand”. And it was the biggest stars in their sport, too! One on one competition with NBA stars, a weekly home run competition between 2 of MLB’s biggest sluggers vying to move on to the next week and an eventual championship match. Think Aaron, Mays, Mantle, etc. An actual full fledged pre-season football game between a team of college all-stars vs a NFL team (if memory serves, I think it was usually the previous seasons Super Bowl champs) and who could ever forget the yearly Superstar competition, a fun but serious series of athletic events such as swimming, sprinting, weightlifting , obstacle course as well as some recreational games like bowling , H.o.r.s.e. and the like, designed to determine the “world’s best all-around athlete”. It included the best , well known professional athletes of the day. We took these events for granted back then, but can you imagine watching Lebron vs Durant in one on one , or home run matchup with Trout vs Stanton or Judge or Harper, etc..never happen or if it did it would be on ppv for some obscene amount of money and the participants would have to be heavily insured and sign all kinds of waivers and stuff! A shame the kids (and us old timers) of today are denied the chance to see these special , fun events by the world’s best athletes of today!
I think I remember watching this as it happened live. Great memories. I’m surprised the announcer said the off the backboard shot from in front of the basket was the most difficult. That was my go-to shot early on when I wasn’t yet good enough to make all net shots. 😆
Pete played this game of HORSE the way we did as kids in Brooklyn. Many times it was who could come up with the weirdest shots. George played more of a traditional college/pro shooters game. Two legends playing a game of HORSE, awesome !!!!!!!!!!
These are awesome man 🔥🔥💯💯 Ice is a walking bucket and Pistol is frickin amazing with his unique handles play style and scoring ability 😤😤 and they’ve both got some awesome shots and Lays 😅😅
dunno why Pete didn't try the lay-up bounced off his forehead. i saw him do it once and i break it out all the time for HORSE. never had anyone be able to follow up without getting a letter
I don't care for Criqui's mouth. If you're gonna fake it you should try and sound real. There was an old announcer who did the Warriors and Raiders games who sounded real.
Something about those Spurs players and the backboard shot. The Iceman hit called and hit a banker from the top of the key. Pistol Pete was always tricky with the ball. Legendary stuff here. 🏀🏀🏀🏀🏀💯💯🔥🔥
some of us seem to be forgetting that by the time he wore the green he was no place near 100pct w/ that injury . every thing ha d to be just right for this very superstitious man.
I love watching old videos of Pistol Pete. The guy was a combination of Magic Johnson, Bob Cousy and John Stockton, with the shooting touch of Steph Curry. He could have broken numerous records if the three point line existed back when he played.
Ben Kizer kinda sucks he resorted too globetrotter type play in order to beat iceman. A lot of records would have been broke by countless legends back then if there was a 3 point line and players shooting away from the ark.
The Stockton comparison is a good one. I'm not sure he had a partner like the Mailman to do the "no look" to though. He and Malone must have had some sort of telepathic link.
