So Sage recommends a 25 y zero, Jedi a 10 y zero and Sig a 15 y zero. My personal preference after tens of rounds fired is 12y 1 foot 8 inches hereafter to be known as the Clark Zero. (Copyright applied for)

Personally I prefer 25, but the true wisdom is to zero for your intended use case and adjust accordingly. No single method will do everything perfectly. I do find it funny that so many experts push their preferred method as the "right" one for zeroing distance.

@aleffel9668
@aleffel9668 Год назад
@@aspavingllc8302 meaning the bullet trajectory would come back to the zero at 30 yards. Since the bullet comes out of the barrel at an arc, it will be low in shorter distances than your zero, and high in between 15 and 30 yards. I believe with NATO spec or +p 124gr 9mm it’s actually, with a 15 yard zero, back on the zero at closer to 50.

I personally go with a 25yd zero because simple geometry tells us that the longer the sight in distance chosen, the more gradual the downward sight axis will be, and the less dispersion will result so say you zero for 25yd then move up to 12 shoot then up to 5 then shoot the vertical spread will be like 2 inches and if you say zero at 12yd vertical spread goes to about 4 inches and zeroing at 5yd if then shoot at a target at 12yd you'll be about 5 inches high and about 8inches high at 25. With everything I've researched and shot a 25yd is the best all around pistol zero

I am not a steady enough shot to use the technique taught in the video, so I had to figure out a way that would work for me. I clamped my empty pistol, barrel down, under a light bright enough to see the three iron sights. I held my head so the front sight is properly aligned in the rear sights. My Sig P365XL has combat sights which mean that when aligned this way the bullet will go to the target where the center of the circle on the back side of the front sight is. If a gun uses non-combat sights the target should sit on top of the front sight. Using the adjustment screws on the red dot sight I moved the red dot so that it sits in the center of the front sight, which is where the bullet would go to. Now the bullet will go where the red dot is which is where the iron sights are also aimed. Voila! The red dot is zeroed without wasting any bullets. The results are good when I shoot the target at the range. I am open to any criticisms of this technique.

I don’t understand other videos saying I shouldn’t zero my red dot with the iron sights. They work independently they said. But I don’t understand why wouldn’t it work? Isn’t that the point of a red dot, to hit where the iron sights would also hit if you were aiming with them. Also, the iron sights wouldn’t be on the way, depending on the angle of your view. Also if I zero at 25 yards, then shooting at 10 would bring the point of impact would be higher right?
@SullyCortez
@SullyCortez 4 месяца назад
Because your irons are normally zeroed for 25yards not 10 or 15. And they are a totally different sighting system. The point of the red dot is to STAY TARGET FOCUSED while shooting.. not so that dot and irons hit at the exact same spot. The BUIS (backup irons sights) are meant only in the event of your dot going down. The dot should allow you to be on all the way out to 100 yards no issues while the irons would be near impractical to shoot 50yards+ fast and accurately. The dot just makes distance shooting and in most cases close up shooting MUCH easier because the bullet and dot will go exactly where you are looking if you do everything correctly in terms of grip, trigger control, etc. and to answer your question, yes zero for 25 and close up your shots should be low not high. A 25yard zero is great shooting beyond 30yards… but that’s rarely going to happen..

When I use a red dot sight on any center fire pistol, I find that oil and other byproducts of “combustion” coat the glass (heavily) in less than a dozen rounds. To the point of not being able to see the target clearly. I’ve had this happen several times, on several different pistols. It is generally considered a good thing to run Sig pistols “wet”. Making the situation worse, earlier. That may be fine in a real life SD situation, since in most such scenarios, the round count doesn’t go much higher. But in a class, or training in general, red dot sights are un usable for me. The exception is on a rim fire pistol. Almost all of them discharge the oil and other debris, to the side of the pistol, only. Fine for any glass mounted on top. Am I the only one to find this to be true? Just say no, to glass on top of center fire pistols.
@yzhou05

Not sure what kind of lubrication you're using, but sounds like you're using too much whatever it is. My milled P239 with RMR has no issues with oil/carbon coating the optic glass, even after a 500 round session. Happens regularly with WML that are near the end of the barrel, but not the optic. What kind of ammo are you shooting?

Happened on a Glock 22 (which I typically run fairly dry) years ago using Federal American Eagle ammo. Happens often (always!) when shooting my FNX 45 Tactical with any ammo...S&B, Federal, Blazer, Remington, handloads...everything. Again, not too much for lubing the polymer guns. But my Sigs or 1911s? They are dripping oil when I shoot them. But never had a mrd on any of them. Now, all I will ever use one on is a 22 lr pistol.

@TerminalM193
@TerminalM193 2 года назад
You're either severely over-lubing or you're using an oil with the viscosity of actual water like remoil.... Or both.... Try using a thicker viscosity lubricant like Lucas heavy duty gun oil. Not only does it stay exactly where you put it, it takes far less of an amount to create a nice full coat that helps with wear on a pistol better than any other oil I've ever seen!

I am a little confused here, please correct me if I am wrong, I am a noob. It is hard to defend a self defense case at 50, and 25 yards specially in home defense. @TerminalM193
@TerminalM193 2 года назад
With pistol mounted optics you always want to zero at 25 yards. There's a very in depth and warranted reason for this with lots of great literature and video on the very subject. Even with a 25 yard zero your holdover is minimal at best but if you zero anywhere from 5-20 yards your zero will then be all over the place and same goes for your hold overs. Also, with a 25 yard zero your now much more aligned with the bore axis so when having to take shots from 10-100 yards your hold over is so miniscule that it's not even something to worry about. There's tons of other great reasons and I highly recommend looking into the subject.

In my CCW class We learned that FBI protocol is 7 yards, and you are correct in that if you happen to shoot an intruder at a distance greater than that then a good prosecutor can turn it into an offensive act. Then you could be found liable for felony murder, assault with a deadly weapon, etc. But keep in mind that within the range of 5 to 50 yards you are only talking about a few inches at best point of impact difference, so unless you're trying to be a hotshot and shoot for the head then you will likely stop the intruder. Just don't be shooting at anyone/anything at 50 yards with a pistol.

@@reinaldoperez1725 No hotshot shots. Hostage situations take it to a much higher level. I would never shoot unless all the boxes were checked, i.e., your family member is behind you. Because the holds are negligible all the way out to 50-60yards vs a 10yard and in zero. Most engagements won’t go beyond 25yards, however in the case of Eli Dickens it went out to 40+ yards, and the benefit of a 15-25yard zero is when at those longer distances the holds become negligible.

it will hit high. when you zero a gun you will have some offset because the sights are slightly higher than the bore. to get the point of aim (sights) to line up with the point of impact you are raising the barrel ever so slightly, this is also to compensate for bullet drop. the bullet doesn't rise as somepeople claim. it starts to drop immediately.

The bullet arcs after leaving the muzzle so that it will hit basically the same point at 15 yards and then again at 35 yards. This distance between the two points is valid for a projectile traveling at a specified rate of speed. So when he says the bullet is traveling at 985 fps, ballistically the arc through the first point at 15 yards and then again (arcing down) at 35 yards. Another example is that the USMC sights in the AR15 (223/556 NATO) at 35 yards so that it will impact the same point out to 300 yards, but the round is traveling much faster at more like 3250 fps.
