My buddy and I purchased 1150 this week, Pitboss doesn’t ask you to send in controller now they send you a new one tell you keep the old one. Which is awesome!!!
@@DeadBrokeBBQ been using it every day. I tend to use 220-230 for most things so far and it's been holding temps perfectly. Only thing i don't like about it is the wifi part.. the app sucks.
Thanks for sharing your wisdom with me because I was having a issue with the 10 degrees increments. So I’ll contact Pit Boss for the firmware update. Thanks again
You got me all excited! Then I called Pit Boss Customer service to ask about the control upgrade for my PB1100PSC2 only to find out they do offer an upgrade for my unit. When I purchased the unit there was no discussion in the reviews about the control not being adjustable between 250-300. Unfortunate.
So I called them with large temp disparities. They are sending me a new thermometer inside the pit. I think this will be better to fix my issue. Thank you for video. Going to call them back tomorrow.
I'm like "Mr. Dead Broke BBQ" I can't afford a RecTeq. The 1150 Pro is a great value once you swapped out the controller, which costs nothing to do. But one day, that RecTec will be mine! LOL!.
@@SuperVertrix I bought a PB 820 on sale at lowes back in 2019 which left me with enough extra cash for a wifi control upgrade. The WIFI Recteq controller is on a different level. A must have upgrade for older PB units. I'm not sure how the Recteq controller stacks up against the new PB WIFI controller. The features i liked most on the Recteq controller were flame out detection/reignition, adjustable feed rate, temp calibration settings, and it can pulse the fan on and off to better control the fire pit.
You got me bro. You are the first person I have ever subscribed to and I have been on RU-vid since it came out. So , ya , good job. Keep up the good work.
Wow Rayton well welcome aboard brother!!! I feel honored and I ain't joking!! Thank you for subscribing and watching my videos!!! I seriously appreciate it!!
Hahahaha ya you know fat kids are always the hardest to teach---ask me how I know!!!! Well I ain't fat just big boned!!! hahahahhaha Like always Rus I appreciate you watching brother! Hope 1st shift is treating you right!!
I'm glad to see that the new controller, appears to be more accurate. I'm really starting to get serious about this smoker. I'm torn between this Pit Boss and Camp Chef Woodwind. Nicely Done. Thanks for sharing. 😎.
Ya bro that is a hard choice to make!! I think the 1600 is bigger so that might be a factor but the Woodwind certainly is a very nice pellet grill!! Flip a coin time?!??!?! Just don't blame me if you get the wrong one!!! hahaha jk Have a great week!!
@@DeadBrokeBBQ My bluetooth software from Pitboss only handles 50 degrees increments. Do you know when the"Smoke It" software that can do 10 degrees increments is going to be updated? Or maybe I missed it. Lol today is 11 degrees in Minnesota today... doing Pastrami best 6 to 8 hours of my life this week. Keep up the great work... Big Thanks!!!!!
You got it going on with your channel, Ricer. Glad to know this pit is getting better and better with the firmware update. Happy cooking and good eating too!
Thanks brother!! Ya it seems to be running pretty dang good now! I am very happy how it is running now after the update!! I appreciate the kind words!!
The reason they tell you the red and white wire first is because it’s the wire that ties directly to the computer board of the new update. Failure to plug that wire in before the others causes you to keep reading thinking you did something wrong 😂
I purchased a pit box 1500 in June. Called support and asked for the upgrade. They sent me a new controller, only it was the wrong one. Called them back and they said they we send the right one but it was on back order. Received it this week and will be installing it this weekend. Support does not take electronics returns. So I have a SMOKE iT, model CAR-01-PG controller, new in the box that I would let go for a reasonable price. It works with many of the pit boss models, has a WiFi controller and I would assume has the 10degree increments as that is what I was requesting from them. Reply to this post if interested.
Well Louie the pits that I know they are upgrading is the 1050 and the 1600. I have zero clue about the 1500 and I will admit I am not sure if I have seen that model. I have zero interest with the WiFi stuff because I use my signals for my cooks but again make sure that the update you are looking for is the same as the 1600 that I have. I do know that the newer models are coming in with the new updated software so you can always sell yours on Facebook market place and buy a new model. Thanks for watching but I am not familiar with the 1500.
Man, I got my smoker this week for my birthday and I emailed them about this and they replied that “there’s no update for that model at this time”. I’m not sure what to do...
@@josephuphoff I feel ur pain: I waited 6 weeks to get mine and it was the last one up here. We have lotsa controllers in Canada but unfortunately they are on back order in the states. It's kinda of a reverse situation down there..
@@DeadBrokeBBQ I mean we got the biggest Grill they sell lol I have no problem plus you're in Vegas pallets are always on sale for like $6 for a 20 lb bag
Hey man another excellent quality vid! I had a question - I am about a week from buying a 1600 from my local Lowe's. I have had my old PB820 for almost 4 years now and I still love it and I've done well over a hundred cooks on it, but I'm ready for a bigger smoker because my foods are so good that I am getting demands to make more and more when I cook! The question I have is - do the new 1600s already have the firmware update or do you think I am going to be in the same boat that you were in a year ago and still have to take the control board from the factory out and send it back to Pit Boss? I am really hoping that this issue has been resolved, but it is very encouraging to see the success you had when you sent yours back in for the update. Thanks and keep those vids coming brother!
There are new 1600's out there and few of the older ones still so all you can do is roll the dice! There is a new 1600 Elite coming out and that has a new updated controller too. Hope to have the new 1600 in here real soon! Thanks for watching!!
From what I understand the PB 850 at Lowe's now comes with the PID controller with 10 degree increments. People with the older version have called tech support to ask about it and have been told there is no updated controller for the 850. Then they call back a few days later and someone says "sure we will send one to you". They are also just sending new controllers now instead of having you send yours to them and having them update it. I guess they figure it was easier just to send out new controllers. I like those new models and kept eyeing them at Lowe's but when I saw they only went up by 25 degrees I passed. Plus, I already have 2 Pit Boss's and really don't need another right now anyway. Someone also suggest when going into Lowe's ask them to plug it in and rotate the dial to see if it goes up by 10 degrees or 25.
Well I have heard that a few people have said they are planning on updating the 850 also. I hope so because my 1600 is twice as good as it was prior to the firmware update!! Thanks for leaving this great info for other people to read!! Have a great weekend!!
Hahahaha I completely understand Kevin!! With this new updated controller I am very impressed with the way this cooker is behaving!!! Thanks for watching under protest!! haha
All smokers have temperature variances from one side to the other. People don't seem to understand how heat works. It's always trying to go up. The smoke stack side is always going to be the hottest on a pellet grill and on an offset smoker with a real firebox, the area closet to the firebox will usually be the hottest. You have to learn to cook in that environment.
Yep I agree. I will say though that the Pit Boss 820 that has only been in a couple videos on the channel the stack is on the right side and the hot spot is on the left side. I know is is weird and I was surprised at that the first time I cooked on it. Thanks for watching and keep on BBQing!!
I just got my 1150 pro the yesterday. And sure enough, it came with the older controller. The guy at Lowes said it shouldn't be an issue getting the upgrade. I'm actually smoking for the first time. Boneless short ribs. We shall see, how it does.
I was told the only way is to turn it on and see if it has increments of 10°F below 300°F. I asked Pit Boss if you could tell just by the serial# and they said no way to identify it that way.
I received the new controller the other day. Did a couple of cooks. I set it a at two different temps, 250 and 350. The main temp readout says its running at the set temp. But, the two probes I have in there too read different parts of the grill aren't right. There reading 25-50 lower. I wasn't that way with the older controller. THOUGHTS???
@@dougleclair5080 Run it a few more times and see if it tunes itself in more. Now that mine has been ran a lot it really hold pretty dang spot on. Now of course from left to right it is going to be off some but over the fire pot it has been pretty spot on.
Cool buddy! Hey man ...get to cookin again lol! My daughters about to come home from college and I'm gonna start experimenting with stuffing anything on the smoker! Pork loin..beef.. poultry ...who knows lol I gotta get outta my rutt! Do something new. I'm getting bored. Take it easy buddy! Have a good weekend!
YA bud always fun to try new things and mix stuff up!! I got my new Santa Maria today and wow this pit is going to be fun for sure!!! Like always brother I appreciate you watching!!
Glad you made this video. I would still like to see how it does with getting up to 400°. I’m not sure this unit would be good for doing a reverse sear considering the time it takes to climb. Would love to see if it becomes restrictive for processes Iike that.
@@SuperVertrix so technically he’s that is correct, but I want to see that practicality of doing it considering the unit takes a good bit of time to climb temperature. It’s not ideal to have to wait so long to get up to the desired temp. So if it takes just as long if he tests it, I’ll just know it’s the unit in general and not my particular one. I have this same Pitboss and want to see comparisons
Ok I been living your videos. I bought the Pro 1150. Today a brisket set at 200 for 12 hours meat was at 165 right on cue. I wrapped in butcher & put it back in 250 for 2 more hours. Life was great but kept trying to check probe temp on my phone. Wi-Fi & blue not connecting?? I retried several times then it would show temp 250 & probe temp. About an hour in I noticed the probe showing meat at 145?? I went out stuck my thermo pop through the paper & it shows 134?? I had prove set a final meat temp of 185. Does the probe shut down the heat when you reach 185?? The control still showed set temp of 250? I’m concerned about software issues
Hmmm no I never had that issue so I would do the same exact cook and see if it continues. If it does I would call Pit Boss and see what they think. Might have a faulty pit temp probe?? Thanks for watching!
@@DeadBrokeBBQ watch ya all the time bro, but I had to throw that out there🤜🏼💥🤛🏼 getting a Pro Series 1150 because of you and Grill Sergeant....you guys convinced me👍🏼🇺🇸🔥
Awesome brother!! Nice pit and a good choice for a great value!! Yes there are better models out there but they cost a lot more! Thanks for always watching and leaving a comment and have fun with that pit!!!!!
Ricer, I love your videos but I'm interested in open your raincap ricer! PID controllers need airflow and to learn my uninsulated 1150ps2 has the updated controller and gets to 400 in 20 minutes.
The new updated controller solved this issue, there is plenty of air flow even with the cap turned down. I had one of the first 1600's made and after the swamp out it didn't have an issue with it taking forever to heat up. I will say the 1600 Elite really heats up quick. Thanks for watching!
I just called Pit Boss and they said they are no longer flashing controllers. They said the have fixes and will not flash the PID, they may send a new one but not sure. So much for 10 degree incriminates. Maybe I just got someone that didn’t know??
Pit Boss still hasn't developed a good PID controller inn5 degree increments for the Series 5 or Series 3 vertical. Yjey supposedly have a $150 controller the Classic. I don't know if that has their latest firmware. I also wish Pit Boss would offer a straight drip pan. I personally got rid of my Classic because I did not like the slide/sear feature.
Ya I hardly ever use the the flame broiler! I hope eventually they do update to a better PID myself. I am happy with this one but it still has a way to go before it can be considered a great controller! Thanks for watching!
I'm sooooooo pissed about my Sportsman 800..... the standard temp control has never been close over the winter and I said.. "Ok.. come spring and warmer weather.. it'll be ok".... ahhhh NOPE... running hamburgers at 250 on the selector.. the damn temp is around 198 with multiple probes.. how can they get this part of "smoking" wrong??
What number is customer service... what do you say... currently it looks like they want 150 bucks..UPDATE!!!!!!. a day latter I filled out a the on line paperwork lol just recieved the new controler yesterday.. installed today and installed (they covered the bill) . Fired it up and life is great. I enjoyed the grill before and now they made it all great! Cooking 30 lbs of pork prime tenderloin at the end of the month for a family outing. This grill has me out punting my coverage. Lol I'm not great.. but you'd not know it.
I got email I will have mine next week originally they said it would be June but that’s good it’s coming I’ll let you know if my lights on when I get it hooked up
Wow Mark that seems like a long time to wait but my guess they are getting a lot of them back right now. I filmed this video a month ago so maybe that is why I got it back so quick??
I called Pitboss direct & they say there is no such thing as an upgraded/fix for the PID controller. How is there all this information in forums & these videos stating that there is an update for the firmware on the PID to be used in 10 degree increments up to 300 degrees? I'm at a loss and thinking of returning the 2 smokersni just bought. Any info would be appreciated folks. Best wishes.
Well Vince sounds like you talked to a noob customer service rep. As long as you bought either the 1150 or the 1600 they should be still swapping out the controllers. Not every pit has this option but those 2 do. Again sounds like you talked to a door knob, call back and ask for a manager because I got mine directly from my Pit Boss rep. Thanks for watching!
If a temp calls for 225 do i set it at 220 or 230? It seems all the recommendations are in 5 degree increments and I never know if i should go higher or lower and adjust my times longer or shorter slightly
230 but remember time is just so you kind of have an idea when it will be done. I have smoked brisket in 8 hours and do the same cook the next time and it takes 10 hours. Always cook to tender and you will always have a great cook!!
@@karenyingling67 I believe that only affects the 1100 the 850 should be good. Mine is the pro 2 which has thicker metal. I plan on using it for the first time this Saturday… going to practice with some ribeyes before I do a brisket.
Been debating getting the 850 Pro but if I have to send the controller back in a new unit (granted this vid is a year old) it may deter me to save up and get a Camp Chef.
Wow sorry I missed this one!! The 850 never needed an update to the controller. But it does not have the 10° increments either. The 850 is a nice little pit for sure! Thanks for watching!!!
Maybe some of them but not everywhere. It really is an easy swap out now! They just send you a new controller but I have read that some people have gotten the new controller already installed. I think it is a roll of the dice right now! Thanks for watching!
have you tried the new controller with the app yet? the app was really messing my cook up last week. The app didn't have the 10 degree increments. And it would randomly change the temp set on the controller.
No I have not used the app, I am not a fan of it and hope to see them enhance that some. But the only pit I have actually used the app is on my Lone Star Grillz pellet grill. That FireBoard app is amazing but I still check the pit every hour anyways so I am not big into the whole WiFi deal anyways. Thanks for watching!
My wife says I can get a pellet smoker for Father’s Day. But I am absolutely torn between the PD pro series 1600 and the Rider DLX. Which one should I get?!
1600 all the way JD. Now after the update this pit is the best box store cooker out there at the moment. Hope this helps and I am a big fan of the OK Joe but the 1600 having a PID controller is a huge step in the right direction! Thanks for watching!!
I sent my Pit Boss rep a message and he said that all the new 850 models will have the updated controller!! So if you an 850 already give Pit Boss a call!! Thanks for watching!!
Please help!! I rushed the removal of mine.. i tried using the pic pitboss sent but it was not good...could you please post a good pic of propper hook up. I have 1 wire not being connected and pitboss has not bee. Much help
Super easy just match up the colors bro and rewatch the video. I am not pulling out the controller to take a pic. The pictures I took for the video have been deleted so screen shot the video and zoom around and see what ya come up with. Thanks for watching and good luck but it is pretty straight forward by matching the colors.
The Smoke IT app doesnt seem to like my upgraded 10 degree board. It wont allow me to set the temp anymore. It just flips back to the prior temp I set on the grill. This sucks... Anyone else run into this?
Hmmm I never even used the app on this pit to be honest! I will try to see how mine works one of these days and put it in a video. Did you try to uninstall and reinstall it? Thanks for watching!
Hi Scott, ever since I got the updated controller it started to preheat quicker. This is still a big pit and it takes a while but faster than when I heated up my offset. Yes you can open the flame broiler if you want. Thanks for watching!!
That white smoke can build up and become combustible and you can blow the lid of the pit. Search it and you will be amazed how these can become little bombs. Thanks for asking!!
My wife bought me the 1600 for my 40th on Tuesday and I contacted PB via email and they said there “was no update to that model at this time” and now I don’t know what to do. I wrote them back...should I just keep on them or call them?
hmmmm Joe well that is not good news! My guess is that they will continue to do it but my light is stuck on and maybe they are rewriting the update?? I would threaten them with "well I guess I will return it and buy a camp chef" maybe they will at least give you more info.
Hello can you help me, my Pitboss Navigator 1150 always has a temperature fluctuation of 20-25 degrees up and down, I'm from Germany, do you have an idea what I can do.
This is normal for these cookers Johann. They have temp swings and just look at the overall average temp on the whole cook and adjust to that. These controllers are ok but not great unfortunately. They are getting better but I have seen some with temp swings up to 75 degrees. So 25 up or down is not the worst out there. All I can say is cook to the cookers abilities and flaws and you will crank out some great bbq!! The new Pro Series is much better now that the controller is a PID but you could always purchase a Rec Tec PID controller and install that instead. Smoke Daddy is another option. I know a few people that do not use the factory controllers in their pits. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!!
Just purchased the 1150 Pro Series When cooking/smoking yesterday noticed my control panel was reading about 49-50 degrees hotter than the temperature at the grates Is the issue everyone talking about, new at all this How do you tell if you need the new firmware control panel update?? Thanks
IF your controller has 10 degree increments up to 300 degrees then you have the new controller. If it tis at 25 degree increments call Pit Boss and get your controller updated. So in a pellet grill the temp is measured on a an average for the WHOLE pit not just one spot on the grates because you decided to place your meat in that spot. So you need to learn your pits hot spots and cook accordingly to them. SO just because you want to set the controller and cook at 300 like an oven you might be a lot warmer at the bottom grate you might have to set the controller around 275 degrees. Hope this helps and have fun with that pit!!
@@Jordanfiend361 I’ve thrown my box away but my wife bought it around June ( Father’s Day) weekend It does the 10 degree increments up til 300* They say that’s the updated one
Howdy Ricer, been really busy as of late so I've missed a few Sunday lives. Glad to see the update worked out good. I apologize if this next question is a bit awkward considering your doing a pit boss upgrade. That said, will you be getting your hands on the new Lonestargrillz pellet smoker? Boy she looks like a buite. And here's a update from out my way. I finally received my Lonestargrillz large IVS. Did my first cook last weekend. My first thoughts, I'm guessing it's going to be a very long time before I use either of my WSM'S or offset. She's a monster and so easy to use. I'm getting the fireboard 2 Drive fully set up this weekend to see how well that works. So although it took a lot longer to receive my IVS from Lonestargrillz than was originally scheduled. Damm I'm a very happy man. Anyway, enjoy the remainder of the cold season. Won't be long before you're hearing " skeeters" buzzing around your ears. Have a great day. 😃👍🔥🍻🦟🌤

@DeadBrokeBBQ not yet but I will call customer service. I did every step possible to connect it, watched a few videos on RU-vid and no luck. We'll see if they can help. Thanks.
I am from Canada, they told me they will send me a new controller as well, that was 5 weeks ago, after a bunch of emails and a phone call, I still don't have a clue when it will come, they wont reply to my emails, when I talked to the guy on the phone he said he would get back to me the same day with a update, that was 4 days ago. I thought Pit Boss had good customer support, guess I was wrong.
Computers that learn? Doesn't sound safe. Well you're still here so guessing a terminator from the future didn't come back and stop the installation of the new AI like controller. That's a relief. Unless, the terminator took over your persona and is acting like you. We'll be monitoring you to make sure you are the actual Ricer and not an expensive knockoff from the future. Yeah, to much time on my hands today...lol
No they do not. I know that it is taking longer than it took to get mine back but I filmed this video a month ago. Thanks for watching but the update has helped a ton!! Quicker and more smoke!!
I would hope this cost them so much to fix they will consider adding the ability to update a bit easier for future models. Be surprised if it isn't included for next year's models.
@@DeadBrokeBBQ no, I know the controller shows the temp, but when I set the temperature, the temperature number on the controller fluctuates up and down as it increases. For example. If I set the temperature to 250 degrees, the numbers when increasing will jump like 189 to 186 to 190 to 187 to 185 to 189 to 193. So on and so on, up and down until the temperature reaches 250. But even after it reaches the temperature, It still won’t stay right on that temperature number. It will continue fluctuating up and down within about 7 degrees up and 7 degrees down. I’ve replaced the control board since I wrote you and it’s working fine now. I thought that it might have been the temperature probe, but it turns out that something was wrong with the control board.
