In April/May 2022, we hewed an oak log into a 28x28 cm square timber for the first time and using a self-restored frame saw cut it into 4 posts, which were used for the construction of our workshop.
This will definitely not be our only video about pitsawing. So be sure to subscribe to our channel, share and comment on this video and give it a thumbs up if you liked it.
Highly recommended are some historical and contemporary videos about this rare craft technique, which we have compiled in a playlist:

CONTENTS:
The 3 m oak log was first debarked with an axe and drawknife. On the ends, the desired cross-section was marked using a spirit level.
Now two opposite sides were marked with a straight edge and pencil. (You can also use a chalk line instead.) With a one-man crosscut saw (Champion tooth) used here by two people, notches were now sawn up to the line, and with an axe they were hewn down to just before the line.
The surface was then hewn with a Canadian pattern broad axe, which we also used for the first time. Longitudinal halves were hewn from the line to the centre - a particularly precise method. The remaining sides were hewn in the same way.
On the axed 28x28 cm squared timber, the 14x14 cm quarter timbers were now marked.
With the help of rack and pinion jacks and by lifting on one side, the trunk was placed on telescopic trestles and gradually raised to about 2 m by moving it to a third trestle, which was always placed one step higher. The wood, which was aligned in the balance and secured with tension belts, was now sawn in two.
A pit saw, long saw or whip saw is a saw, usually 6 to 8 feet long, used vertically by two men to cut logs and timbers into boards, planks and squared timbers lengthwise. A distinction is made between the untensioned version and the frame, as used here.
Our frame saw is an antique barn find from small ads, which has some typical features of a pit saw (2 mm thick blade, 24 mm tooth interval, heavy set), but with 130 cm blade length (of which only 100 cm are toothed) and 40 cm frame width it is unusually short and narrow and rather reminds one of a veneer saw. Above all, however, it lacked the usual handle that extends upwards, without which it is almost impossible to work with it and which we therefore added.
After jointing the concave tooth tip line with a homemade jointer, a wolf tooth was created with the angle grinder and files (i.e. deepened round tooth gaps to accommodate the sawdust, which proved very helpful). The teeth were then sharpened and set back to exactly 0.3 mm with the help of a hand anvil, hammer and saw set dial gauge.
With the saw prepared in this way, first the half cut, then the two quarter cuts were made. With concentration it was quite possible to keep the cut on the line, and as the effort required was less than expected, we could work with nearly no breaks. We are positively surprised by the clean and efficient work of the self-prepared saw.
A cutting performance in the 14 cm oak of 1 m in 4 minutes (= 2 square metres per hour) is quite satisfactory.
The 4 forest-edged posts were later chamfered, charred at the bottom and curved, which is unavoidable with quarter timbers from such a debarked log. They could nevertheless be tied with centre axles, tapped into the purlin at the top and given leaf sockets for headbands.
