Great hack! Using two different colors for the lines (red for long, yellow for short, for example) would make setup even faster and easier.

That's a great idea! You could even put a piece of tape on shorts or longs if you don’t have two colors. Thanks for the suggestion, going to update my set. See you outside!

Rather than cutting the cord for each side, you could just feed the cord through one hole, tie a simple overhand knot, then feed it through the second hole: no need for a second knot if you don't cut the cord. Or, if the washer is the right size, just use a ring hitch (slip a bight of the cord through the center of the washer, and loop it over the top of the washer), and you don't need to drill any holes in the washers. The cord will help prevent the washer from riding up the pole, too. Also, UHMWPE (the generic name for the material used in Lash-It and Zing-It) is famous for knots slipping. A better solution (but a little tricky) is to splice the cord to itself. Look up videos on making whoopie slings to see how to do this.

MSR use to put grommets on the end of its footprints so that you could pitch fly first. Recently they stopped adding the grommets to the footprints. I’ve no idea why and I did write to them about it but no response. I was very disappointed when I bought the MSR Hubba 1 and discovered that the footprint did not allow you to pitch fly first, unlike my previous purchase of the Hubba Hubba 2p and footprint a few years ago. However I managed a work around. I had 4 split washer rings (8-9mm from memory). With 2 pairs of pliers I opened them up and inserted them through the MSR 1p ‘Generic’ footprint corner end straps and then closed the split rings up so they would stay attached to the footprint, and were also the right size such that they would accommodate the end of the tent poles but not slip up the tent poles. Has worked flawlessly.

I definitely want to know how this works with the Jake's Feet. I know it will work with the buckle style tents. The Jake's Feet have a lot going on, but the tip of the pole still has the same shape as a standard pole, just more of a ball bearing end. I think worst case, you will need to remove the washer to accommodate the Jake's Feet as you secure the inner. Let me know how it works! See you outside!

Side tip: Paria Outdoor sells 1.5mm Dyneema line for $13/50'. Significantly cheaper than Lash-it/Zing-it if you only need a small amount (for something like this). With 50' you can create a fast pitch rectangle, and have enough line left over for a couple extra short guy lines.

Especially the Hubba is possible to pitch fly only without any hack. I have seen it in an old MSR video. Spread the fly inside out on the ground. Put the poles in the grommets. Make sure the straps of the grommets are at it’s widest. Make sure the zippers are open . Then with move a little bit like folding a popup tent turn the fly up and the poles with a twist in it. Pull the straps set the pegs and you are ready for the innertent…

I did an even simpler, quicker version of this for my MSR Hubba Hubba: only two pieces of cord (for the two long sides of the tent) with a grommet knotted at each end. I just cannibalized some grommets from other old tent footprints that I had lying around. You don't really need the short sides, or the full rectangle shape. Just lay the two lines out parallel to one another, and at roughly the width of the tent. Of course, none of these gyrations would be necessary if MSR would just put some frigging grommets on the frigging footprint corners, lol. I've since moved on to a SlingFin Portal tent that is designed with the capability to be pitched fly-first.

No, my tent has a modified washer that fits the end of the pole. If you have buckles, you will have to get a matching set and tie them in. You could also put some washers on the fly to fit the end of your poles.

I don’t know if it is just my msr hubba hubba 3p, but I can pitch it fly only with nothing special. The doors are loose and the poles support it just fine slotting it into the ends without anything else. I just went outside in case I was taking crazy pills. It worked.
@OutsideChronicles

@millerhoo
@millerhoo 7 месяцев назад
@@OutsideChronicles Yep - I am starting to think it is unique to the MSR Hubba 3p. This is the second video to have the msr in the background and say it cannot be pitched fly only. I have Durston tents for my 1p and 2p, so I just assumed all tents can be thrown fly only :) I made a quick video showing it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8Y9la-Lfjzcj.html

Do you think you could just attach the washers onto the line with clove hitches, rather than drilling in and knots? Pros and cons likely, and want to make sure you have enough room for the tent poles to seat properly in the washers with the line inside too?

An exo-skeleton-design tent means the load bearing structure is the outer tent (what you in this video call 'fly') and the inne tent is hung from the inside of the outer-tent. This is way superior to normal tents since it both lets you pitch the outer and inne togeather but also lets you pitch only the outer for example a lunch-stop in bad weather or if you ar not using the inner for wheight-reasons for an example. This also results in far more stable tents that can take more wind and heavier snow-loads without loosing shape. Basically all decent scandinavian tent-manufacturers make all thier tents in exo-skeleton-design like this and few serius outdoor entusiast here wouldn't buy anything the tents used normaly in most other parts of the world. Helsport and Hilleberg is two reputable brands but there's other more inexpensive ones also. But if you are stuck with these tents for whatever reason this is a usefull stop-gap-solution!

Uhhhh, the tent you are using to show this technique, as well as the Hubba mentioned at the beginning can ALREADY be set up fly only, with the footprint, which you should be using anyway. 🤦‍♂️ Pretty sure most if not all tents using a footprint can be set up fly only. 🤷‍♂️
@OutsideChronicles
@OutsideChronicles 7 месяцев назад
I demo’ed using the footprint at the end. MSR now ships a generic footprint for their tents. They do not have tabs/grommets like previous tent specific footprints. Some will debate the need for a footprint. I am on the pro footprint side. See you outside!
