The MSR Hubba Hubba NX 2p is one of the most popular tents among bike travellers and outdoors aficionados. Here an unboxing and review, tent pitching, walk around and also a minimal pitching.
The model available on the American market, the Hubba Hubba NX Extreme Shield, is different from the European one, the Hubba Hubba NX Durashield: same design and dimensions but different built, stitching, seam taping vs seam sealing, coating and poles material and rain fly colour availability, I will go through all of those as well.

Ciao Davide, thank you for your very comprehensive review of this tent! I appreciate your knowledge & experience. I just purchased this tent in the US and am very pleased with the decision. Especially after going through many positive reviews like yours. I kind of wish however that the green rainfly was available in the US also. I don't like to stand out when camping. Overall this looks like an excellent tent that I hope will last me for many adventures! Best Wishes Always.....Bob V

Great review. You really covered all that the tent offers. In Canada we lack the green wind screen / outer.. I wish it were available here but I'll take what I can get, which is the grey / red version. I just purchased the tent and have yet to try it out. Like you mentioned they come with the bottle of sealant so I plan on going over all the seams to prevent any issues with moisture, which is especially a concern here in the PNW. I was happy to hear all the conditions that you put the tent through. Seems like a solid and trustworthy tent. Many thanks for your work on this video.

Hello, thank you very much for the video and the information you provide, it is very useful. One question, do you use this tent without a footprint? Ciao Andres, thank you very much and welcome aboard! 1. I use the tent religiously with a DIY groundsheet I made in TyvekPro (see ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9RUKl7bp7_8.html) I would advise against using an ultralight tent whatever the brand and/or model without a groundsheet ( the longevity of the floor would be shorten dramatically also small stones could pierce the floor) 2. The tent in the video is the current Hubba Hubba NX available in Europe as mentioned in the video MSR told me they have no place no change this model in Europe. I met many bike travellers using this tent but I still have to run into someone with the Syclone poles.

Hi Davide. Excellent video. Very timely and informative. I was researching this very MSR tent. Can you elaborate on the USA seam seal issue with some of the 2019 model year production? You mentioned something was not working properly with the precision sealing. I am assuming the tent leaked. I am in USA. I heard MSR has since seam sealed the new models. Do I need to seam seal entire tent; both rain fly and the tent pan? Would I seal it for inside tent or outside sticking. I did lookup the Easton Syclone Poles. Looks impressive. Lighter and more flexible. Interesting how the technology comes out of a arrow manufacture in USA. Perhaps MSR is testing this material in USA first before deciding to go global. Thanks. Kam
@DavideTravelli
@DavideTravelli 3 года назад
Ciao Kam, welcome aboard! There was no issue with the production, when they released the new one in the US market they used precision stitching and so decided not to seam tape any longer and leave it up to the customers to seam seal the tent on their own. It's a simple process to do inside the inner tent and the flysheet on the inside part I think it's just for cosmetics I cant see why it wouldnt work if done on the exterior - they have a video on their website that shows the procedure. Now after a few months, I guess due to complains, they started to do this procedure themselves at the factory. All in all not a big deal.

Great review and set-up vlog. Still finding it hard to find a video of the tent with the fly sheet peeled back half way, so you can have half covered half uncovered for stargazing, yet still have easy access to to pull the fly sheet back over quickly in case of rain etc. I've seen it once on here.
@DavideTravelli
@DavideTravelli 3 года назад
Cheers man! That easily done, you would just need to stake down the vestibules for good measure just in case it will rain, remove the vestibule webbing from the stake and then remove the red webbing from the poles and peel back the rain fly. It will stay in place because of the two hooks in the middle arch. I'd tuck it in between the inner tent and the middle arch so the breeze wont make it too noisy. If it rains all you have to do is to fit the red webbings at the end of the from poles and the vestibules webbings in the stakes. I'd leave two rocks to mark the position of the stakes as in the dark they can be hard to find.

Hi Davide, Thank you for your amazing videos!! I have a question regarding the pitching, which I can't find answered anywhere else.. I am not able to connect the parts of the upper middle pole all the way together because the plastic nob kind of sits in between, keeping them in place with a little groove but preventing them from being assembled all the way - a 2mm wide gap stays. Does that happen to you too?
@DavideTravelli
@DavideTravelli 2 года назад
Hey LB! You can move the nob it's not fixed in place so you will be able to join the pole pieces perfectly.

Thanks for sharing this review. I have just purchased this tent and when I rigged it up in the garden today, I was quite surprised at how high off the ground the outer fly sits and also how close it is to the inner at the ends. It made me think that in very wet weather with driving rain the water will drip off the ends of the tent and just saturate the inner?
@DavideTravelli
@DavideTravelli 3 года назад
Ciao Juckky! To be honest I've never experienced such thing, as long as the tent is well positioned and the groundsheet is smaller than the tent bath the inner tent will stay dry even on pretty heavy rain. I would guess you might get the inner flooded if you pitch your tent in a terrain that resemble a slight ditch and the rain water will collect there or if you pitch your tent in a place where lots of water run through in that case it would be like pitching your tent in a river.

Great review but I was missing your main point you mentioned at the beginning: a long-term review. How long were you using your old one? Why did you have to replace it? Did it leak? Did the sealing come off? Unfortunately, I didn't hear anything regarding durability. I just bought myself the same tent but am concerned about the durability. I don't want to buy a new tent in 3-5 years only because the sealing comes apart. Thinking of sending it back and buying the Elixir instead. Taking 1 kilo extra but it's made of polyester and more durable. Would be great to get your thoughts on that. Grazie mille and best regards!
@DavideTravelli
@DavideTravelli 3 года назад
Hey Tobi, welcome to the channel! My long term experience is great given I decided to stay with the same tent. Had to replace it because I’ve wear out the the floor and the zippers. The zippers I could have replaced them but the floor is a different story. I use it a lot because I’ve been travelling for all this time, I’m sure some other popular tents like Big Anes would have not lasted this long but in fairness they are lighter. I had zero issues with the the seam taping both on the inner and the rainfly, so no leaking. I guess that varies a lot on the storing habits and the climates you use it in. I tend to store is pretty dry or dry it out at the earliest opportunity daily. I never store it for long wet. Said that if you don’t mind the extra weight the Elixir is a great choice: half of the cost and will last twice as long. Pretty much the same design as well.

Hello, I was wondering, how does the tent hold up in the wind? In most double-walled tents I see, the rain cover doesn't reach the ground fully. Doesn't that make them more likely to fly away with the wind?
@DavideTravelli
@DavideTravelli 2 года назад
Hiya! It wont become a parachute if that's what you mean because the tent is low on the ground the wind is usually higher in fact topically the tent is squeezed to the ground when it's really windy. The guy-lines on all the sides should help keeping it a little up. The new poles on the US model are indestructible in strong winds but the model in EU could be (slightly most often) damaged like all the tents in this category by strong winds in places like Patagonia. I used it with the EU version in various windy deserts and Patagonia and it performed quite well.

@@DavideTravelli thank you for your response! So overall how long do you think this tent will last? Is it as good as hilleberg tent?
@DavideTravelli
@DavideTravelli 2 года назад
You're comparing oranges to apples if you compare it with a Hilleberg tent. You need to compare it with tents in the same weight categories. The lighter the tent usually the more expensive and less durable it is. If you treat it well and use a good DIY groundsheet it does last surprisingly long but it will never outlast a tent double or more the weight.

@DavideTravelli
@DavideTravelli 3 года назад
Hi Leo and welcome to the channel. In Europe the seams are sealed taped as always. In the US market they have a new manufacturing technique of precision stitching and for a number of months they sold the tent without seam sealing suggesting a manual sealing after purchase (I guess all this was done in order to avid the problem some people have with the ageing of seam tapings). I think people complained and they started to seal the seams at the factory with seam grip. I think if you buy it now even on the American market it should be seam sealed at factory so you shouldnt worry.

Say I get to a host and stay there a week or so first thing is I do is unpack the tent and let it dry it out, maybe this is why I didnt have any issues. @@orh6896 This makes no sense. So why are you at an MSR Hubba video, "leo chan"? You heard a bunch of complaints about the Hubba, but that makes you interested in buying the the Hubba? Why don't you buy some other tent? I saw a Chinese tent the other day that's a shameless ripoff of the Hubba--why don't you buy that? I bet a lot of the comments complaining about the Hubba are phony, and were left by people from other tent companies, who are trying to make MSR look bad. If those Hubba tents leaked, where are all the RU-vid videos showing it? There are thousands of tent videos, and I've watched a lot of them. The only video I've seen that showed an MSR tent leaking showed some idiot spraying his tent with a garden hose. I think people complained about the Hubba tents not because they leaked, but because other people told them that tents are "supposed" to be sealed in a certain way and the Hubba tents weren't. MSR has been in existence 50 years. MSR is one of the most innovative makers of mountaineering equipment. They are headquartered in the rainy city of Seattle. I have a very hard time believing that they sold a bunch of leaky tents.

Hi, I have a US version of this tent and I noticed a few more differences. The big thing is that it does not have color coding on the fly, all 4 tie outs are gray... And as a result, now the doors of the tent are not symmetrical, and open to the different sides. There are two additional mesh pockets above each of the entrances. There is an additional tie out in the head and legs. The tie out on the doors is made of a thin cord, not a sling.

MSR (Why fold the tent fabric so evenly? If you do this constantly, then in places of kinks it is not excluded (and quite possibly it will begin) damage to the canvas (or the siliconization layer) and if you fold it in a loose, chaotic form, the kinks will be distributed EVENLY throughout the entire canvas of the tent (one or two-layer) Don’t bother with the exact level it when packing the tent!
