I want to thank both of you gentlemen for producing such a fine video on the Short Game. I’ve spent the past year rebuilding my full swing with an emphasis on “wide to narrow to wide.“ As a result, my distance/partial wedge shots have suffered tremendously. Watching your video this morning before I went to the practice range, provided a real Eureka experience! By “intentionally” focusing on wide to wide, moving my entire trail arm forward, and swinging the club with intuitive feel as if lobbying a ball, provided a real breakthrough for me today. Keep up the excellent work. You two work very well together. Good rapport.
I took a lesson with Monte a month ago, Brandon, and have been working his advice into my general swing. We did not work on pitching. I have been using this technique at the range after watching your video. SO much better. Smoother, more consistent, solid contact. Thanks to you and to Monte.
Awesome explanation of proper pitching method! Used it today and had 4 up and downs from 10-15 yds off green. Nowineedto workon approaches but nice to know I can recover more easily!
Monte is so empathetic. No matter what you say to him, his response is "that's totally understandable", or "you're completely right". He would make a good therapist.
Damm it Monte and Brenden, the right shoulder is the key again. I had been working on pitching the past three days with feeling of keeping my right shoulder moving. Man, it works. I started using the feels from D4D and worked my way up...left arm out/off chest...worked but not consistent...lead with right elbow...worked not consistent...right shoulder out...works consistently.
Yes, it is simple to do it just takes practice to trust it! Full swing wise try steep shoulders in backswing flat shoulders (i.e. right shoulder out) in downswing. Keep it moving!
I'm in the same situation. I've had a hard time with too much spin on my chip shots and it's hard to time that when I'm in tournaments. I have the same problem in my full swing as well and working on that too. Thank you for the great information guys!
Monte's underhand toss motion has radically improved my feel + ability to hit soft lobs - BUT, I suggest you practice/master the shallow/wide/unwristy part first ( look up the Steve Stricker pitching videos, they're first rate), I think of it as U shaped swing. Then add the underhand toss thoughts, soft hands are important. My problem is usually getting too quick. Brendon's swings at 13:44 are great. Good work guys.
best video you've done in months! videos like this is what made the channel so great. please focus on more things like this than your 'swing analyses' which are dreadful
It's interesting that keeping the arc as wide as possible is as effective for wedges as it is for fairway woods. When I feel like I'm sweeping these clubs is when I'm playing better and scoring better. When I get steep, I weep.
A good way to do this is to take the club back and right before the transition, let the club head fall level with your arms then hit the shot. Essentially all you are trying to do is take most of the lag out. A lot of mid to low handicap golfers are really good at this because they are flippy on full shots anyways, with no forward shaft lean. The shaft lean when too far forward will kill a pitch if you are not just bang on perfect, but with the bounce it just glides to the ball.
Keep the chest rotating with the 'arms'- plural moving, & the left shoulder has to keep moving all the way through the shot too. Ball middle sternum to opposite left pec. Weight around 55L - 45R. No big shaft lean at address.
Great video again guys, and this one really did it for me... I still have little problems when im in deeper rough, and trying to chip between 20 to 70 yards... im going too deep with this technique and it takes all the power of or i blade it.. and also having little bit of problems when the ball is in down hill.. any tips :D! thanks any way from Finland (Y)
The only thing more theoretically confusing and convoluted than pitching in golf is love IMO. There are virtually as many ways to do it, as there are instructors...and this lesson is a good one if you choose this method. 2c.
Make you’re one handed tossing action with the right hand. Club in hand. Stop at the end of your backswing and then put your left hand on the club. Notice how much of a reach it is with the left arm because of the width of the right arm.
Right shoulder over left foot is a great thought to ensure you rotate your upper body through the shot. This guy(Monty) knows what he's talking about, must admit i prejudged him at first, i was wrong.
I played the best golf of my life with wide and wide as my only swing thoughts. ..... I immediately know when I don't work right shoulder out. I am trying to incorporate right shoulder out consistently during the full swing. That's my fight.
From one spot, scatter targets all around, different distances and random distance order. I take range balls and set them together in a line of 2 or 3 as targets. Then I practice chipping/pitching to them. I must land within a yard before I move to the next target. Over time, I get better and can move through the set of targets with fewer and fewer attempts.
Most people think the arm is the forearm, but the arm is the bone between your shoulder and the elbow. If that part keeps moving then your good, but if it's just the forearm then your dead.
I saw the wide to wider concept in Taking it to the Course of the 2nd attempt at your approach on the 2nd hole after you blocked it to the right. He told you shallow the club and you where shallower than normal but he moved your hands "lower and wider". Take a look at that adjustment. I try to visualize that position when I swing.
I figured out the swing thought I need: "both arms go the same speed from the top". We chunk and blade it when the right arm and right hand goes faster than the left. "both the same speed." is the swing thought. They left arm and left hand leads- the right arm and hand go the same speed, never faster- that causes the flip. Use that swing thought: both arms, same speed."
I would be so pissed if I were a top instructor and all the time I was talking you were walking off fiddling with the camera or looking around not listening, think I would just pack up and walk off.
"2 chip ins a day keeps the bogeys away" when you're practicing don't leave the practice area until you chipped in twice and you'll be a great chipper you can thank me later
Isn't wide to wide simply no wrist set and a body motion....Basically arm movement independent of the body move back and through SEQUENCING in Chipping, Pitching and Full Swing is WRONG............CLUB ARM SHOULDER CHEST TRIANGLE back and through. WIDE To WIDE with EVEN TEMPO is all about control.
Ah the mad hammer thrower finally realizes that of all departments in golf the right side is more important in the short game than any other.Split hands and right arm only chipping/pitching are the best drills.
