45 piece SAE Tap and Die Set from Harbor Freight saved the day on this 1086 project. We spent $89 on this set. Then fixed a $300 part with it. Not bad at all so definitely worth it!
It's the only cheap split die kit on the market. It's split so you can start off with the left and right wrench screws just pushing on the die, make a pass, then tighten the left and right screw, make another pass, etc. You can control your cut depth. It reduces wear on the die and allows cutting of fresh threads to be easier also.
