Since 2000, the tech boom has attracted droves of young, educated people to Pittsburgh. Now, many newcomers consider the city to be a bikeable and walkable paradise. This short documentary considers how it became cyclist-friendly, as well as how those changes strengthened local communities. "Everybody has a negative connotation of this city," says one resident. "It's a different place than most people think it is."

I've lived all over the country and travelled around the world as a veteran of the U.S. Navy...and take it from me, PITTSBURGH IS TRULY THE MOST LIVEABLE CITY IN THE WORLD! It's just the right size, has a great American history, a wonderful, eclectic cultural intellect, excellent sports teams, and most importantly--TOP NOTCH PEOPLE! Black, white, asian, whatever...Pittsburghers are not as hung-up, uptight, screwed-loose, and fuck-witted as I have met in my travels. We all come from hard-working, coal miners and mill hunkies. Parents knew love meant not sparing the rod and forgiveness wasn't divine--it was necessary...to move on! Our Mothers cooked chicken and chops, halupki and spare ribs...and our Fathers left the sweltering mill or dirty mine after a long day and they were they all the same color. PITTSBURGHERS have a pride that comes from a unique and rich sharing of what is best in each of us--and that, my friends, is integrity.

If you move to Pittsburgh or the surrounding area, make sure that you get an apartment or buy a house that you will not have to cross the river to get to and from work daily. They become a bottleneck at rush-hour. There are many bridges, every two or three years, they close one for months to reconstruct it. If you want to use public transportation or the light rail Subway, you could live without a car if you live in many places...example:Southhills close to the light rail system called the “T“... If you were going to work in downtown Pittsburgh, you may want to avoid living anywhere that you have to drive on route 28 in bound the parkway east inbound, the parkway west inbound.. these are expressways with limited access, and if someone has a breakdown, if there is an accident, always delays. There is a phenomenon that happens two drivers driving on the parkway east and west. There are two tunnels. The Fort Pitt Tunnel, and the squirrel hill tunnel. For some inexplicable reason, drivers slow down, or even stop before entering the tunnel. You could be driving along on the parkway, and the tunnel was approaching, and the traffic slows down to a crawl, sometimes stopping in inching towards the tunnel when you get within about 100 yards, then when you get inside the tunnel, the traffic speeds up and all the way through the tunnel and out the other side. You wonder what happened. There is no explanation.It is unique to Pittsburgh and it always happens during rush hour. You also need to pay attention to low lying areas because there are certain places that get minor flooding quickly when we have moderate to heavy rain. Millville gets flooded occasionally, Becks run Road floods almost monthly every summer and spring, route 88 in Castle Shannon floods, route 51 in Carrick also floods. So don’t rent an apartment or buy a house that has these flooded areas during rainstorms between you and where you have to go every day. Moderate crime areas to avoid are, Beltzhoover, Carrick,the hill district, Wilkinsburg, East liberty, Penn Hills, McKees rocks, West Park, Mount Oliver, Garfield. Manchester,It’s kids with guns. It’s nowhere near as bad as a place like Chicago or parts of Los Angeles, but occasionally they make the news. If you like boating, Allegheny County has the highest number of boat registrations not on the ocean shoreline in the country. If you like the night life, and you like modern apartment living, the strip District which is next to downtown Pittsburgh is it. Lawrenceville which is about a half a mile out from the strip District is also up-and-coming. The top spot for nightlife is the southside. Parking can be a problem there, I think they charge you to park up to 11 PM. The weather in Pittsburgh is moderate. I can only remember three days that the temperature went over 100°, over the past 30 years,and it rarely goes below zero in the winter. We get snow , But it melts usually a few days later a week at the most. Pittsburgh has the best hospitals probably in the whole world. I remember Howard Stern was talking about some famous actor that had some medical emergency, and he asked Robin where they did the operation, and they said someplace out west, and Howard said, what the Hells the matter with him, why didn’t he go to Pittsburgh.. Pittsburgh was noted by the national news for having the most polite driving public in the country. you rarely ever hear horn blowers in traffic.. Pittsburgh has been noted a few times for being the most livable city, whatever that means. If you want to live among the upper income croud, top of the heap is Fox Chapel and Swickley Heights. Those places are spread out with lots of grass to cut.Next would be Mount Lebanon, which is not so spread out, but it has beautiful homes with charming tree-lined streets, a quaint business Main Street, and the T Subway tracks pass right through there. In Mount Lebanon, the local municipality DPW, Police Department, The schools, everything there is textbook correct. You won’t see vacant dilapidated properties in Mount Lebanon, you don’t see roads in disrepair, you don’t even see lawns with uncut grass. Pittsburgh doesn’t have a large homeless population like some cities do. You’ll see the occasional pan handler holding a sign pleading for money. Which I saw A guy at the West End Bridge one day with the sign. Saying he was hungry. And later that day, Quite by accident, I ended up going into his jewelry store on southside. Go figure. Pittsburgh may not be as glamorous as some other places, but it’s not crowded, There are more trees within the city limits of Pittsburgh than in any other city in the nation.the air-quality here is good, even on our worst days when it’s 85° and humid, the air is still better than the best days in Los Angeles for air-quality. We don’t have earthquakes, we had a couple tornadoes in the past 25 years that didn’t do very much damage, we may get some rain from tropical storms or leftover hurricanes, but we don’t get the wind people on the coast get..We don’t have fire ants, we don’t have wild hogs, we do have deer, and as a result, Pennsylvania leads the whole country in incidence of Lyme disease. If you drive, every year your chances are one in 59 of having a deer impact. I myself have had four deer impacts, my wife has had three. Two of my impact were while I was riding a motorcycle, one of them was at 70 miles an hour. So you will see deer in Pittsburgh it’s rare that you do not see a deer At least once a week. There are no toll bridges in Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh is the most bicycle friendly city in the whole nation, and getting better. If you’re a sports fan there’s always the Steelers, and the games are always sold out years in advance it seems, so the games are always locally televised. Good luck getting tickets. The penguins, they’re always up near the top of the heap also. And they have a brand new beautiful stadium, as do the Pirates and the Steelers. The Pirates have arguably the best ball park in the nation . Not only is there not a bad seat in the house, but it is in the best most picturesque location of any stadium in the entire country. It is the site you will never forget during a night game whether you’re in the ball park or just driving past. There is a bicycle trail that goes right past both the baseball in the football stadium that is supposed to go all the way to Washington DC, I don’t know, I’m not going to ride that on my bicycle, but that’s what I have heard. Pittsburgh has a 7% sales tax, and Pennsylvania has the highest gasoline taxes in the nation. $.76...You’ll have to get your car safety inspected and E missions tested once a year in Pennsylvania. Which I am told by a friend that just moved from Pittsburgh to Myrtle Beach South Carolina, that that is a good thing. My friend said there is no state inspection in South Carolina, and you would not believe how many cars you see broken down or burning oil on the roads. And cars that are falling apart on the roads down there. You often hear people from different cities across the country saying that they have the worst roads in the world and their cities. I have heard that said about Pittsburgh by Pittsburghers. But the roads are not that bad. We have our pothole season that usually starts around February or March. But the actual worst roads in the whole nation are in Arizona. i guess because,a Great number of the roads there are dirt roads. In the Pittsburgh area we get our water from three large Rivers. So we do not have to worry about droughts or water shortages I know quite a few people that do not lock their doors at night or when they go out to dinner or to the store... A typical three bedroom two car garage one and a half bath house in Pittsburgh on a quarter acre lot sells for under $200,000. That same house in Los Angeles or San Francisco with sell for one and a half million dollars. I have never been unemployed here in Pittsburgh since i was 16. In fact, when I leave a job, I have to give two weeks notice because I have another job to go to in two weeks.. this part of the country has the lowest skin cancer rate in the country because we only get an average of 59 cloudless days a year. It has something to do with gulf moisture moving north and clashing with cool Canadian air coming over the Great Lakes. I was in downtown Pittsburgh one day on business, and a passing car slow down and asked me directions. I not only gave them the correct directions with pointers on how to avoid certain one-way streets, but I drew them on the map.Those people not only thanked me, they told me that they were from New York City. they said that in New York City people won’t even slow down to give you the time..I jokingly replied, probably they just didn’t understand English. I often hear that a lot of people that move away from Pittsburgh to places like California or Texas or Florida, often move back to Pittsburgh for different reasons. my mailman for years on cold winter days especially said that he is moving to Phoenix the first opportunity that he gets. Which a few years later he did transfer to Phoenix Arizona. He sold his house, and he went out there, and he lasted three days. he said when he got there, and on his new route, he noticed that people had bars on their windows even on the second floor in a lot of places. He didn’t dare go out at night because of the uneasy tension in the air that he felt ...He was back in Pittsburgh on his old route in less than 2 weeks..Either where they move to was too expensive, or too hot, or too crowded, or it didn’t have all of the things that they missed in Pittsburgh. Which is a lot.

I currently live in the Atlanta area, and planning a move out of this area within the next two years. Pittsburgh is definitely on my radar, the other being Albuquerque. So thank you for the informative insider tips you provided. I'll visit Pittsburgh next summer and stay for about a week to get a good feel for the city.

Harry Lime Hello Harry hi!! I wanna move to Pittsburgh, and I have seen some very good points you wrote... My question is, Is there a lot of jobs in Pittsburgh that’s pays good money, Which areas are affordable and safe for me and I also wanna be a police officer do they get paid enough in Pittsburgh?????
@harrylime5147
@harrylime5147 5 лет назад
If you are going to visit Pittsburgh to get a feel for it two possibly relocate to Pittsburgh. Depending on the type of job you would be looking for. I would look for accommodations on the northside,. Not in downtown Pittsburgh. Most companies want you to apply on line. You can’t just walk in and ask for an application. You have to apply, and then they give you an appointment for an interview after you do an online application. That does depend on the type of job you were looking for and your qualifications and police record and the ability to pass a drug test. I myself have never been unemployed. I have always gone from job to job to job with no gaps in employment. If you have a trade, such as electrician, carpenter, plumber, HVAC tech, you can get a job anywhere not just Pittsburgh. If you are a professional , I don’t know what the job market would be like, but Pittsburgh is a semi large city, there should always be work for healthcare professionals. Pittsburgh has been here for a long time, and we have over 1000 bridges within just Allegheny County. It’s always on the news so we have to start rebuilding our bridges, so if you or in the construction trades, I would imagine it shouldn’t be that tough to find a job. I know they want to replace hundreds of miles of waterlines in Pittsburgh and the surrounding areas because of lead. I have never seen so many truck driver Sedeo drivers needed. But that is a nation wide critical shortage. Sue if you are a CDL truck driver, you definitely won’t have a problem finding a job. I don’t want to encourage or discourage anyone. I always told my kids from a young age,...It’s rough out there. Don’t depend on anyone to help you in life, the only one you can ever depend on for sure is yourself..

Just because there is no state inspection doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad thing, it's just cause people are lazy and stupid when it comes to taking care of their vehicles, I have that tendency sometimes myself tbh.

actually, Pittsburgh is a GREAT place to live!, so much positive growth in this gorgeous than!, absolutely love my home than!, tried living in Tampa for a few years, dreaded going back when I came home for Christmas one year, Pittsburgh may not be as busy as say New York, but it has a ton of charm and many advancements in medicine and technology! it has come a very long way since it was once a smokey old steel town!, it's beautiful!, I'll never leave again!

I am just repeating what a friend of mine that recently moved to Arizona had to say about the roads in Arizona and the heat he was not expecting. My friend is an engineer and actually researched the federal or national highway report on the best and worst roads in the country. He found that Arizona is at the bottom because of the number of dirt roads they have .. he said it may be unfair to count all of those dirt roads, but he lives on a dirt road 10 miles from the Mexican border,and it’s bad.. About the heat in Arizona, he said something that made me laugh. He said ,do you want to know what it’s like to live in Arizona in the summer. He said they call it dry heat,He said let me tell you.....go and turn the oven on to broil, and let the oven heat up. And then stick my face right down beside the oven door and open the oven door..He said that is what it is like to open his front door to go outside in the summer in Arizona.... I live in Pennsylvania, and if it ever goes above 85°, The only reason I go outside if I dont have to,is to jump to the pool.

Jimmy Jack ... That’s just not true about it raining 70 days a year in Pittsburgh. 2018 was a big year for rain in the eastern half of the United States not just Pittsburgh. I have to commuted by motorcycle since the late 60s. Over the past six or seven years, I have only ridden home in the rain on my motorcycle less than 10 times a year. If it is raining in the morning, I will not ride my motorcycle to work. But if they say it is going to rain but it is not raining at that moment, I will write to work on the motorcycle. Most of the time that they say is going to rain, it does not. I guess it’s worse for a bicycle list in the rain, because you cannot carry all the reindeer you need for the trip home like I can on my motorcycle. Just remember this about the rain. When people move to Pittsburgh from Colorado or Arizona or California. And they have never been east of the Mississippi, some of them or flabbergasted at how green everything is from April to October. They say everything out west is dried out and brown... as I respond to your comments about rain, in California right now, they’re having fires, historic flyers. We have never had them in Pittsburgh. One more thing about Pittsburgh. There are more trees within the city of Pittsburgh than any other city of similar size in the entire United States. Pittsburgh is also recognized as being the most bicycle friendly city in the entire country. And they have announced plans to make it even better for bicyclists. There is a trail that goes past both football and baseball stadiums in downtown Pittsburgh. That goes all the way to Washington DC.Pittsburgh also has the largest bicycle museum in the world. I forget the name of it but it’s on northside in an industrial park walking distance from the casino and the football stadium.. Pittsburg also has the steepest hill in the entire state. It is called Canton Avenue off of Coast Avenue off of Banksville Road in Beechview. It looks like a cobblestone wall. A bicycle club in Pittsburgh takes a day and they ride up the steepest hills in Pittsburgh on that day. And Canton Is the one that very few of them make it up, but they do try.

Harry Lime my experience with Pittsburgh is the weather is terrible 9 months out of the year !! ok maybe 8 ..... it wasn’t a place for me . Are their nice things about the city ? Yes , but in my humble opinion living out west there is no comparison to weather & quality of life for me. That’s my opinion and my experience . Once again if you like cycling you’ll get 3 months and of those 3 months you’ll have a lot of rain . An Article in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette confirms that Pittsburgh ranks #2 behind Buffalo for the dreariest places to live and Cleveland #3. I concur .... Pittsburgh really is a tale of the haves and the have nots .... the moniker of Pittsburgh being blue Collar is long gone . The “yinzer”. Title actually used to belong to 80% of the population & when the Tech industry came in and manufacturing left a new culture dominates Pittsburgh .

Pittsburgh is decent and this impression is from an outsider looking to retire here. Streets are narrow, hilly and curvy but as a motorcyclist I like this. Not too great for bicycling and a good gym is not too close by but I live in Trafford, PA which is Westmoreland co. --- You've got the original pittsburgers and the rich tech kids with good paying jobs - also medical field that keep the old guard afloat - but this guy is talking about bikes now and there's one bike path into and out of the city but to try and walk, ride or jog seems dangerous .....but I am happy here and will work towards those things I want - There's always South Carolina for the real retirement

There sure are a lot of varying opinions about this place. I was born and raised there and lived less than a 10 minute drive to the Golden Triangle. I moved away in 1973 and never had a desire to move back. Used to go back and visit years ago and it mostly looked depressing to me. I'll go with that it is mostly that ,with a little bit of the good life for the younger crowd.

Pittsburgh is very, very hilly. Lots of hills. The hilly neighborhoods are undesirable and so that where the slums and the poor people are. The neighborhoods with fairly level streets are super-expensive.
