Sid’s toys first seem just disturbing! They were terrifying to me in my young years and for good reason; they look like they could haunt dreams. And one of the main reasons that is derives from them not speaking. If they could’ve just explained who they were and why they were actually very nice toys, Woody and Buzz could’ve avoided that whole accusing them of cannibalism and attempting to fight them thing. It’s like... loosen up toys. There aren’t any humans around! Why don’t they just say something?

Believe me, there has a lot of things in my life that did pretty much freak me out. But in Toy story, where we get to introduce to Sid's toys was not one of these moments where I indeed freaked out as much as they would do to other kids, but they did shock me as a kid at least for a short period of time.

I know most people know this but for those who dont: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is what happens when something super terrifying occurs and scars one persons mind so much they cannot function properly. Its like seeing a loved one die before your eyes and not being able to sleep thinking you couldve done something. My mother has it. She was in war and lost her husband. Shes lost so many people in her life. She has constant nightmares and has to go to a psychiatrist. Most Veterans are diagnosed with PTSD and thats why a lot of them commit suicide and go one killing sprees. They aren't getting proper help from the government they served to protect. I hate it when people who see Veterans shoot up people believe they are violent cus it isnt their fault they were damaged to begin with.

Their being mute... I had a theory. Basically, the toys went mute from the abuse. Basically, the abuse was so traumatic that they were unable to speak. Toys can retain their ability to speak when their heads seem attached to their bodies, but we see that a LOT of Sid's toys were torn apart, abused, and even if restored, it's like their being decapitated was the clincher. Decapitation for a toy would result in forced mute, or damage to the head in general forces the toy to be mute. Because we see a LOT of toys that went mute are decapitated in some way, or have severe head damage. This severe head damage is evident even with the green squeaky alien. He was chatty at first, then he suffered considerable damage, and thus went mute. Also notice how Wheezy the penguin was practically whispering because of his busted squeaker. Certain critical parts of their fun may have been responsible for their going mute. Squeaky toys need their squeaker, so this is what led me to this theory. Critical parts of a toy may have been damaged beyond repair to cause them to go mute, so as long as those critical parts remain more or less unharmed, the toy can continue to verbally communicate. Just a theory though. :p

@@katiekoo-koohead2551 Yeah, that or in the case of putting a doll together in a store, the heads might all have the same personality, logic, etc, like a hivemind, but only become individual toys when the customization process is complete. According to my theory, let's say there was a custom Barbie store where you could effectively make your own Barbie. You pick a head with varying skin tones, a body with various skin tones, etc. The heads without the body may have a strange hivemind, but say... You put a pale Barbie head on a body with tanlines in the pattern of a T-shirt and bikini bottom, she might wind up with either a personality like a southern belle, or might be a lifeguard captain, with the clothes being the final note on her personality. say a bikini in Lifeguard colors, but the open button-down Hawaiian T-shirt, with a wide hat. So your Barbie might adopt the personality of being a lifeguard. Let's say you were getting an action figure from a similar store. It fits a basic template. but the head could be cybernetic, with a purely mechanical claw for one hand that has a gun built into the arm, and a proper hand that has an extending tendril that has a corkscrew pattern etched into it to resemble a drill, the action figure might think he was revived from a lethal accident or something. Even build a bear toys might have this variable personality thing with the internal heart having the biggest influence on the toy's personality. So an elderly woman who loves her only surviving and still young grandchild may want nothing but protection for her beloved grandchild after her passing. So the toy might manipulate events to make sure the child is safe and happy. Like protecting from nightmares, or always being there for the kid, and passed down the generations. The grandma's wish influencing the protective nature of the toy. Again, just a theory.

I am glad that Toy Story went deeper than mute equals creepy. Which is not a good look for people who are actually mute getting stereotyped. Communication is essential and comes in many forms. Thanks for discussing this, Issac.

I think the reason why the Mutant Toys don't talk is because Sid's torture partially sucked the life out of them. They're still alive, but their faces are now lifeless as they never make any kind of facial expression. Take the LGM for example, he's talkative and full of life at first, but after being Skud's chew toy, not only is he now incapable of speech, but his face is completely motionless!

I think realistically, Sid's toys don't speak so the scenes with them are strange to go with how scary Sid is. The theories about it are cool though.

Counter point. Sid’s sister held tea parties for her dolls, and asked them questions so she loved them and expected them to talk to one another. But they never talk in the movie.

I agree with you to a point.....I do think Sid's toys don't speak as clearly as Andy's toys because they are scared of Sid.....but I think it goes even deeper than that. Consider this question.....what do Andy's toys have from their child that Sid's toys don't? Love. Andy LOVES his toys....deeply....to the point that he holds onto them until he is a young man, on his way to college and then instead of throwing them in the attic or the trash, he gives them to Bonnie to take care of because he wanted them to be loved and played with....even if it was no longer by him. Sid's toys remind me of the toys we meet in the Caterpillar room in Toy Story 3. Notice if you will....those toys don't talk very much either....like Big Baby with his squeaks. The only one that really talks is the Chatter Telephone.....and we only hear him speak for the first time when he is ALONE with Woody. Its only the toys in the Butterfly room like Lotso and Ken and the others who can speak clearly.....why? Because they are loved. The toys in the Caterpillar room, much like Sid's toys were, in a sense, tortured....like using Jessie's hair as a paintbrush, chewing on Mr. Potato Head, we see other toys cowering in fear. I am reminded of a quote from the book the Velveteen Rabbit. “Real isn't how you are made,' said the Skin Horse. 'It's a thing that happens to you. When a child LOVES you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real....Once you are real you can't become unreal again. It lasts for always.” I think Andy's toys....Woody, Buzz, Jessie and the rest, became real because Andy loved them and that's why they can talk. Sid didn't have that bond with his toys....

One thing that I would wonder about is the toys found in stores that are already alive. All of the Buzz's as an example are alive and claim to be the true Buzz Lightyear. I like your theory though, so I'm just gonna go with it in my head from now on lol.

Stinky Pete were never loved and never went outside his box (I think) but it's possible Jessie taught him to talk from her love with Emily. I'm not sure with the Baby in TS3 though, who were as loved as Lotso by Daisy. Perhaps some toys are having it more difficult to talk because they are designed not to be able to. Etch for instance or the racer car.

Well, when it comes to a person, mostly a child, that gets abused, feel that they're vulnerable and or dealt with a lot of violence, they will end up becoming mute and would fear their suppressors; fearing if they make one mistake or is in their suppressor's sights, they would get abused or tortured.

I was one of those weird kids who actually loved sids toys. Babyface was my favorite. I just found him sort of adorable in a strange way. They scared the heck out of my sister but I thought they were great. Sid was a creative kid

What I thought about it is that they don't speak because overall the atmosphere in the house is very hostile. Sid's parents don't stop him from being a nuisance to the neighborhood and there's signs of the dad being both abusive and alcoholic which manifests in Sid's unruly behaviour.

i've always wondered why the Jellyfish from "Finding Memo" didn't speak. That made them haunting,unless that was the intention.

Likely due to their real life biology. Every speaking creature in finding nemo (except peach, the starfish) have a brain. Even starfish have a complicated system of nerves to control them. Most Jellyfish aren't a single creature, as much as a massive collection of tiny creatures. I can't remember exactly how it works, but it's kind of like an extremely large scale and simplified version of how we're a bunch of cells.

That has been one question that has been on my mind for a very long time. Why the Mutant Toys were unable to speak. Funny enough, one of the LGM’s were able to speak prior to being chewed up by Scud and remained silent since.

That's also possible too. Hence why the LGM once spoke, but not anymore since Scud mauled him. And when Mr. Potato Head threatened Woody by saying "I hope Sid pulls your voice box out." this is possibly what happened to the mutant toys prior to their current modifications. That is, if anyone of them had voice boxes, that is.

Here’s my theory: All toys are alive to begin with, like humans. Also like humans toys need fuel to stay alive. The fuel for toys is a children’s love, and, obviously, the fuel for humans is food and water. Now, I think that there are some differences though. For example, I think that if a toy doesn’t get love from a child it will very slowly start to break down. Much much slower then humans starve. Now you my be asking, well what about toys on store shelves? Will they “die” if there left on a shelf. I think the brutal but truthful answer is yes, however I do think toys can be brought back to life unlike humans. Another thing you may be asking is what about Andy’s toys sitting in the toy box for years? Do you remember in Toy Story 3 when Andy picked up Rex and then when Andy left the room Rex said “He held me, actually held me! I think toys can get there fuel from just as much as someone picking them up, and also I think it takes a very long time for a toy to “die”. Before they “die” they go mute like Sid’s toys. Eventually if there unloved for long enough they will eventually just be inanimate objects, unless someone loves them again. That’s my theory.

The abuse theory makes sense. I was always under the impression that they couldn't speak because Sid didn't have imagination in the sense of playing with his toys like Andy does. Because Woody and Buzz still belonged to Andy, they could talk, but once the alien was officially Sid's, it couldn't talk. Even the "Mama doll" most likely belonged to Sid's sister, so it could say Mama. So the toys reflect the mentality and imagination of their owner...just a thought

I didn't actually mind that sid's toys didn't speak. I didn't talk much as a kid so I had to find ways to communicate my ideas. Lots of miscommunication or lack thereof Communication in general lead the problems. So I sympathize with the toys, I never thought they were scary

I always felt more pity than fear towards Sid’s toys. When I was little I never even considered the possibility that some kids really did things like that (though probably less extreme than what Sid does in the film), so to see such nice toys in such a state pulled at little me’s heartstrings just a bit. Anyway, your explanation of a combination of shared trauma and a feeling of solidarity among the toys in Sid’s room leading to a choice to remain mostly nonverbal is awesome! Love the channel, keep it up!

Well, almost all of the kids who have been shown with toys don't really have legos, accept Andy in the second movie, but he has no minifigures or bionicles, so that is a mystery that has yet to be seen.

Marina maybe it would depend on the situation though because there are some dogs that are way too rough with their toys and tear them to shreds possibly even killing them..

Yes, Sid's toys did creep me out as a kid, haha! In the film and especially during the Disney on Ice Presents: Toy Story. Seeing them in person was insanely scary but I remember the overall show being incredibly awesome. I also remember leaving the show with a Green Army Man helmet on my head and a huge smile on my face.

I think when theyre damaged or taken apart on *purpose* they lose part of their spirit because what theyre originally alive for is to be played with, not harmed So they slowly just Die.

I believe that once a toy is smashed and rebuilt themselves.they no longer have the ability to taik anymore with the exceptions of moving.

How amazing it is for me to think they sent message that broken toys (people) fix those who are in danger of becoming broken too. In most cases, such people have lot more empathy than those who never faced something traumatic or overwhelming.

Awe, youre so cute when you get worked up talking. Anyways. When I was little I thought they couldn't speak because how they were given different incompatible parts, like it would be uncomfortable or even hurt for them to talk. Also, I was sorta like Sid with my sisters barbies growing upup, just a little less gruesome 😂😂

I always thought that they didn't talk about they were a conglomerate of a bunch of toys therefore they wouldn't have a specific voice. Like if you and another person became one then who knows what your voice would sound like. Who's voice is more dominant therefore they just don't speak. Idk that was always my theory and because I don't want to be sad im going to believe my theory 😂😭

Most of those toys belonged to Hannah. She treated with love and kindness. As we've seen in the tea party seen, she has gotten her toys back from Sid and plays with them the way they're intended to be played with despite them being broken.

my theory is that the fact that Sid's toys where RIPPED apart and rearranged, i'd say that their voices where damaged, making them mute. the dog that chewed the living heck out of the alien toy, must've broke it's voice while he got mauled by Sid's dog
