Seen a couple of comments to test the phones in dim/dark environments. Pixel 8 does work in low light environments, however when it's very dim or pitch black it will require fingerprint or PIN. FaceID works in pitch black.

Not really, people who constantly work with different materials or get their fingers even slightly wet/dirty know the pain of fingerprint unlock. It's common sense to know that face Id is much more convenient as you HAVE to look at the phone anyway.

Agreed! Face unlock is nice but I get more frustrated with it. Having both is nice for when your hands are dirty you can use face unlock but when your phones on a desk and don’t want to reach your head over or pick up the phone you just use your thumb.

@sodapone
@sodapone 7 месяцев назад
Face ID with a mask works by focusing on the features around your eyes - presumably there's still enough datapoints there to still be secure. Additionally if you wear glasses with a mask, you need to add your glasses with a Face ID scan, ensuring that an iPhone will only make a concession if the conditions are met that you're wearing a mask, you're wearing a specific pair of glasses it recognizes, and your eyes aren't obscured by things like fog on the lenses.

For the glasses/sunglasses tests you're supposed to pull your glasses down and say, "Edna. Mode. And guest."
@its_argho
@its_argho 7 месяцев назад
The Pixel is basically looking for some depth in the image, it can detect imperfections like the edges and the bottom part which if you hold too high, looks like a head and torso is floating in air. Try getting a more refined cutout with a little bit of curvature and make the edges sharp and make sure there’s no gloss showing up on the photo which gives an indication that a flat surface is being held up.
@jrok680
@jrok680 Месяц назад
LOL Don't forget that pixels are the phones that are most equipped with artificial intelligence, it's not just about image depth. It is an entire algorithm that is put to the test.
@cassius_eu5970
@cassius_eu5970 Месяц назад
Where did you get that (wrong) info from? The Pixel uses dual-pixel autofocus to map the depth of the image. Even a perfect cutout won't unlock the phone because it will still recognise that the face a flat image and not a 3D model.

I remember reading up on the exact camera that google is using for the pixel 8 pro a couple years back. It is an RGB camera indeed, but there's some special science about that specific camera where it can pickup subpixel and some depth definition of an image, it's not as accurate as blasting IR or dot projection like the iphone but it gets really close. That combined with Googles ML software makes it really good at rejecting fakes. A flat images wouldn't work on it but maybe a 3d mapping with toning would.

I have used Pixels for many years now, and I love Android a lot, but let's not kid ourselves - while the Pixel 8's Face Unlock is very impressive, it doesn't beat out the dedicated hardware tailored for biometric scanning the iPhone has. In the real world, a software based unlock using just a camera will be inferior compared to something with multiple sensors on it (infared camera, dot projector, flood illuminator and camera.) When it comes to biometric security, the iPhone still wins on a technical level.

You do know that even though you can unlock wearing a mask on the iPhone, that is not considered a fully secured method right? But again, I will prefer to use fingerprint unlock than face because using fingers are much more easier and convenient. But in the name of science???? Erm...... But hey, you should have ordered a 3D printed face of yourself to test the iPhone because 2D photos are so old school now. As for the sunglasses test, you should have asked someone else to wear it and try to unlock the P8P and see if it works.... LOL

@DyadintheForce
@DyadintheForce 7 месяцев назад
While Face ID is vastly more secure due to its sensor array, the Pixel 8's ability to do this with just ML and front facing camera is astounding. You need not worry about how secure it is. While Face ID is about 20x more secure than Pixel 8 - The P8 is considered Class 3, which by definition meets the criteria of 1 in 50,000 spoof rate. I don't know anyone who is going to try and spoof your face 50,000 times for that one lucky chance (or even have your phone that long to do that). In that case, the phone is lost and you would have reported it lost anyway. 1 in 50,000 seems pretty secure to me. End of the day, for mask and glasses - use the fingerprint sensor. Best of both worlds. Options are always good!

This is like when Steve Jobs first announced iPhone 2G and said "it is at least 5 years ahead of anything out there". And lo and behold, 4 years later is when an Android phone finally had the same responsive multi-touch technology as the FIRST iPhone. Today iPhone 15 Pro is the hottest phone in the world (literally) with a 2500 nits display, USB-C with 10 gigabits per second transfer speeds, the fastest CPU on a smartphone and satellite connectivity. No one can outdo Apple. They're just unstoppable.

Lol, the power difference is inconsequential. Security is also a non-issue because the chance of that being exploited is virtually zero. As for convenience, I agree with you; fingerprint is definitely quicker.

Google should have you move your eyes around to prove it is not a cutout.

Generally face unlock is more about convenience on Android. Personally I always use my fingerprint even though I still have face unlock activated. It's just force of habit. I think Apple is the only company that has made it a primary way to get in your phone so theirs has to be the most flexible.

I wish apple kept the fingerprint reader along with the FaceID, it would've literally been the best of both worlds. Just put it in the damn lock button or below the screen!
