Pixelbook Go hands-on: Google’s cheapest Chromebook yet

Google's new Pixelbook Go brings the price down just a bit - to $650 to start. It's a small, slightly round, really nice looking Chromebook. With Intel processors, an option for a 4K screen, and a great keyboard, it could be a strong competitor to the other Chromebooks in that price range. Google is promising 12 hours of battery life, too.

@@jamesm568 Yeah, probably depends on user behavior limited by how many functions and features you want/need. Kinda like whether you want a streamlined, low-customizable iPhone or an open and feature-rich Android. Chrome OS is like you'd want something that is less custom to you and optimized for specific kinds of usage, but therefor does those very well.

For 600 dollars it's missing a lot of features that windows laptops have at this price, ports are limited and the OS is really limited. I really want Google to put more effort in the OS if you're selling a laptop for such a price it needs some more features for apps, offline usage, proper multitasking, and polished and smooth animations. It's still stripped off of many things. And with Ipad OS launched I see less and less motivation to buy a Chromebook.
@Argameus

Chromebooks have worked offline for years now. They support Linux apps with steady improvements in that department. Multitasking has steadily improved with Multi desktops recently reach stable. I don't have much experience with them but a lot of what people think is missing from Chromebooks was solved long ago
@tzeimet
@tzeimet 5 лет назад
@@SeeinHyrule The problem is, it doesn't do these things as well as Windows or Mac, and if they want to enter at the same price point and market segment then that is a necessity. I think Google has grossly overestimated the market for the "simple" computer, most people using laptops these days grew up with computers (and mostly far more unstable operating systems than now) and have a pretty good idea what they are doing.
@tzeimet
@tzeimet 5 лет назад
They would be much better shipping this as a dual-boot with windows, and just have ChromeOS as a kind of quick-boot OS as many laptops did with Linux 10 years ago, and have windows launch as an "app" (using hibernation states) within ChromeOS. Most users would use Chrome most of the time, but still have the option to use heavy applications when necessary.

I can only guess that Google views the Pixelbook line as halo devices to elevate the Chromebook genre in general, not as direct revenue makers. The prices on all Pixelbooks so far have been outrageous for a Chromebook, but it might cause people to reevaluate Chromebooks generally if they're seeing these lovely designs at their local electronics retailer or online. Alternatively, if you're really, really into Chrome OS for some reason, and also have a pretty good income, these might be the "luxury" Chrome OS devices for you.

Windows OS going arm for instant turn on and conectivity. While Chrome OS can boot much much faster on X86. So basicly its same but with a different path.

Purchasing this machine has made me a firm believer in Chromebook's capability. I use my Pixelbook Go for work and so far I am able to do everything for work with this Chromebook. The version I have is the base. I went with this machine because I was skeptical at first about them, so I didn't want to spend a whole lot. The second reason is I really like the form factor of the PixelBook Go was the simplistic design. I felt that with the current lineup from Asus and Acer, that the PixelBook Go looked the most attractive and it has the keyboard that I love. Lastly, I love the color. Ever since the black MacBook, I have been wanting a black machine. The reason why I finally went with a Chromebook for work is that I was tired of hauling my $1000 MBA with me, and am always paranoid that at some point I was either going to drop it or spill something on it. If something were to happen to my Chromebook, I would be upset but nothing like I would be if something were to happen to my MBA. What I also love about the Chromebook, is that if I need the use of a desktop, I can just remote into my MBA from wherever I am. For me, the Chromebook has been the perfect Machine.

I’m glad that Google made a cheaper Chromebook, but I still think it’s too expensive. If the computer only runs a glorified web browser as it’s operating system, the most I’m willing to pay is $500. For about $150 less I can get a cheaper Chromebook that feel great, has 2-in-1 capabilities, and better storage options. However, I think the biggest problem with the new Pixelbook is not other Chromebooks, it’s the iPad. iPadOS gave the iPad a tremendous boost in versatility to a point where they can do more than a Chromebook because it’s more than just a glorified browser. It has optimized apps and better system apps, and the iPad hardware is more powerful than most Chromebooks, considering you can do rather intensive tasks like graphic design and photo/video editing which is something that are nearly impossible on Chromebooks. If Google released this type of Chromebook a few years ago, I’d say they have a hit on their hands. However, with other Chromebooks providing more features at a lower price point and with iPadOS making the iPad the biggest rival Chromebooks, its less clear whether if it will be a success.

Once again, as with every Google Chromebook announcement, I question "who is this for?!" It's the price of a windows laptop, with poor specs, and a handicapped (albeit simple to use) OS. The only way I can justify the existence of Chrome OS at this point is educational tech and elderly people. And neither of those demographics are out there spending $600
@TudBoatTed

I love how everyone is complaining, but they have never used chrome OS extensively. Yeah, the price is still a bit too high, maybe reduce it by $200 by reducing processing power. But chrome OS is genuinely a delight to use, it's just so easy and snappy, I use a Windows custom built desktop at home and Chromebook on the go, I couldn't ask for anything else, it just works

This product makes no sense. To get a display better than 1080p you have to shell out $1399. The $300 iPad has a better display than any of these? The only way I can see a viable Chromebook with this "MacBook" design, being a sucess is pricing more like this: $399 with an m3, 8gb of ram, 64gb of storage, better display than 1080p (The easy choice, no brainer laptop to recommend to anyone who needs to replace their old windows machine - runs ChromeOS) $599 with an i3, 8gb of ram, 128gb of storage, same better display better than 1080p (You want a little more power and storage) $999 with an i5 (upgrade to i7 for $99), 16gb of ram, 256gb of storage (upgrade to 512gb for another $99), same better display better than 1080p. (A real machine, you probably should install Linux or another OS on if Google would allow it)

If it's over $450...NO DEAL. That's too much for any spec Chromebook. Sorry. I have a Samsung Chromebook V2 Plus with a Core M3, and I got it for $400. And while I love it and dont miss my Macbook, it's still limited in many ways. Google needs to make these cheaper
@brightymcbrightface
@brightymcbrightface 5 лет назад
64GB is because Google expects users to be on the cloud, only keeping minimal stuff local, but how much would the BOM have increased to make it a 512GB device? $20? Really out of touch decisions going into this product. What I don't "get" is the price ... make this thing $299 with an i5 and decent folding touchscreen with a fast low parallax error stylus carried in the clamshell, give it to schools by the baker's dozen in a cheaper, robust plastic drop-proof body, and it could be successful, profitable and change lives. As it is, it's just another "this is why nobody wants a browser laptop" swing-n-a-miss.

This is a Chromebook, you're confusing it with a Windows laptop. It will run fine with a Core m3, 8GB RAM, 64GB storage. Unless you wish to store lots of local media 64GB is perfectly fine. I'm only using 9GB with Web apps, Android apps and Linux apps. Storage is used more like a phone.

The screen 3:2 is better for me than 16:9. Not a SD Card. And the processor is only 8th generation. This chromebook is’nt available for France. It’s just overpriced for design and lightweight. M3 is just enough but if you need more power, i5 8th generation with windows app for example will be more slow.

It's boring and I am very disappointed with Google. It's another clamshell Chromebook. There are already many good clamshell Chromebooks out there. OK, it looks nicely made, but you pay a premium for a device with very limited IO. Where's the stylus support, why is not a 2 in 1, has Google lost interest with Chrome OS tablet support? As an inferior cousin of the Pixel Slate, it could be destined for the same fate. I think Google should focus on what they do best, innovation. The Pixelbook was a great product pushing Chrome OS boundaries when it first appeared. It had some issues, but a next-generation Pixelbook would have been a better use of Google's hardware development resources. I fear Google may be going the same way as Apple ... risk-averse. In fact, iPad OS allied with Mac OS Catalina may be an indication that Apple is trying to turn things around. If only Apple could ditch their rubbish laptop keyboards and give their laptops a touch screen, you wouldn't need both laptop & tablet to be productive in the Apple ecosystem.

Reviewer seems to be Pro Google, consumers laugh at the idea of 64 storage and a M3 processor in a laptop for 600+ dollars as this is way over priced. The common argument to this is "well it's a chrome book don't store locally". The addition of Android Application on Chrome, means more apps and more apps not ran in the web equates to more space needed. A large video or power point working with can eat up a lot of the "left over" 64 Gb space, because it's never 64 GB + After the OS install. 64GB really equates to 52GB at best.... I do like the look of it though, but NO finger print or face scanner means I have to tethered another device to this machine to use "fast unlock" features and all options require additional hard ware purchase (titan key should be included) .

What an absolute steaming pile of 💩 Google have lost the plot on Chromebooks. WAY to expensive for not much more than a browser, and this is coming from a daily Chromebook user. If you're in the market for a Chromebook, you're better off looking at a midrange windows laptop which runs desktop class software and... chrome! 🤦🏻‍♂️

Please don't make my mistake. Don't buy a Pixelbook unless you want to get screwed out of a good chunk of money. My Pixelbook died after only 7 months. The replacement they sent me had loose screws under certain keys making them impossible to press. Google's customer support is the worse of the worse, they are incapable of processing an exchange, quite literally. It's been over 3 weeks and Google still hasn't called me back about getting a proper replacement. Avoid doing business with Google, you WILL get screwed.

There's iPads, Samsung tablets that come with S Pens, Surface Go, old Surface Pro's lol come on Google! Companies need to realize that tech is cheap now, why? Because technology is improving at a fast rate and last years tech is STILL decent, but because it's considered "out dated" it's more affordable. Plus after the slate I'm not taking the chance on this thing.

Google needs to wake up and smell the coffee... They need to drop this overpriced Pixelbook & Chrome OS rubbish and focus all their resources on making a solid Pixel phone, because frankly their phone efforts are very poor in 2019. I’m not impressed with anything that’s come out of Google in the last few years, it’s a good job they’re still Google because if all they had were these devices then they would have become a was was many years ago already.

Too expensive for a laptop without what seems like a bare minimum today: no fingerprint reader, no pen support, no 360° hinge, no thunderbolt 3 support, no Intel 10th gen, no bigger storage option. For a traditional clamshell format, its target audience of traditional folks is HIMO better off buying a windows laptop for that price.

Every product has it's buyer. To be honest the product is really impressive with it's lightweight, keyboard and speakers. And remember you're also paying for the brand not the product, as it is with every large company. Take apple, you cannot manually fix your laptop/phone nor any other of their products. And they are hella expensive for what they are.. The Chromebook is meant for people who just need a portable device that doesn't lag out for casual things, writing, listening to music, watching netflix and so on. The minimalistic look is also a big factor here. But hey nobody is forcing anyone to buy the product, yet they wouldn't make it if it's not going to sel
