Randy Randall lmao Kurt literally said in a rolling stone interview that he felt like he needed to be in the pixies-- or to at least be in a cover band of the pixies
In the book Come As You Are, Nirvana stated that they actually thought that Smells Like Teen Spirit sounded too much like a Pixies song... as if More Than A Feeling didn't exist.. LOL.
Interviewer: "I get the sense that the songs are like experiments that you perform one at a time, you're putting them together. Is that an accurate way of looking at it?" Francis: "That's a pretty good way." Interviewer: "How would you describe the process of putting together a Pixies song?" Francis: "It's kinda like an experiment, the way we do, one at a time, it's like that, I don't know." I love this exchange. The interviewer describes how he thinks they write songs, Francis agrees, the interviewer then asks if they write songs, Francis just repeats what he said
I always thought Kim Deal has one of the best back vocals in the business. I am not saying she sings like Luciano, but that voice is just something else.
had front row seats, went to the August show 1989 Toronto at the CNE, they opened for Love and Rockets, The Cure... I HAD NO IDEA ABOUT THE PIXIES.. they blew me away..bought DOOLITTLE the next day on vinyl and still own... thanks for sharing this video
I love how, at the end, the camera pans to the rest of the band, who are just suddenly there, right next to Francis. I didn’t even know they were there.
It's weirdly fitting for the band's og dynamic. The focus on Frank doing the explaining and Kim subtly stealing the show, while Joe and David are pretty much ignored.
She has masculine like characteristics. She believes in herself and very outspoken. That just makes her even more attractive to me. I've always found Girls who do it better than boys so hot!
it’s crazy how unpretentious he was in interviews. If you were to guess what his personality was like by their music you would think he would be the opposite of his ‘aw shucks’ genuine, humble, regular guy personality
Thank you. I solved the problem by recording the (non existing audio) with Goldwave and just blending the left and right channels. At least I can listen to it now.
He's not a good guitarist? A good guitarist is someone who makes a guitar sound great even if he plays just one chord! That's why Joey Santiago is a great guitarist.
Bingo. What is a good guitarist. Im impressed watching guys shread, Im even more impressed if they shred with feel. But I love one of a kind abstract noise better when its done properly.
saw pixies in dublin in 88 when they had come on pilgrim and surfer rosa out.It had,the best album cover an adolesant kid could wish for,i was 15 and blown away by the show and the album cover.
Two people in the comments dislike the questions, one of em even called them pretentious. I think the questions were unusually good. I don't see interviewers probe the essence like this any more. And Charles came up with great answers too - seemingly simple, but actually rock-philosophical.
there was no weak link. her voice and bass style are a huge aspect of how great they are as a band. like i said, listen to pod by the breeders, it's so fucking good. her voice has something special. i think the whole band is great and would suffer without one of the members. it wouldn't be as good. just her backup vocals alone would hurt the band to be without. i'm a musician too since we're talking perspective. i love ringo btw. creative and influential drummer. unique style and personality.
I've got this theory: Black Francis wrote the best Rock Songs of the '80s and '90s because he was crazy in love with Kim Deal but couldn't tell her, or get her to love him. For example in the song called "Tame" he made their voices mingle as if they were consuming carnal love. He gave everything he got for her, all his love for rock'n'roll, all his rage. He gave everything for her, and when he broke the band, he was cursed: despite all their brilliance, his first records didn't work, and later the new Pixies will send back the weakened and sad echo of this first passion ( I love their last albums, but...) The drama of Black Francis is to have his destiny linked to a woman who has not recognized his genius. It's his tragedy, but it's also his glory: he never became a rock star, never sought to be one, was never pretentious, and offered the world hundreds of sublime songs. He owes it to Kim Deal because he owes him his suffering. Well, that's a theory, but from the way they look at each other at the start of the video, I just believe it's a solid one.
I miss City Limits (on Much Music) during the 1980s & 90s, it was the only show on TV were you could watch videos & interviews from Underground /Alternative bands, until M.M. created The Wedge in 1992-3. P.S. Christopher Ward is the interviewer.
I just listened to Doolittle recently for the first time and it's just amazing. Next band on my list is Husker Du. Already listened to nothings shocking by Jane's Addiction.
Its funny my kids (teenagers) like their music(The Pixies) but say to me this music wouldn't make it today Dad. I remember back in the late 80's all my friends saying their albums were shit and rubbish, its funny over time as gits like Radiohead said we wouldn't be a band if it wasn't for the Pixies, people my dorky friends included saw what the Pixies were unique and brilliant. Nothing of an alternative nature was considered listenable back then until Nirvana came along.
Love the Pixies. But sometimes I would love to have seen where they would have gone if Kim had been given more input. This video is a huge metaphor for the Pixies. Kim is sitting here with loads to say.... but Charles is oblivious to it. He's not concious of shutting Kim out - it's just that he automatically sees it as his band and he'll do all the talking. In a parallel universe if Kim and Charles could have collaborated they could have made some seriously amazing records. They made seriously amazing records anyway..... they just could have made MORE.
Listen to the Pixies second album then listen to Bleach you'll see the wicked similarities. There was a bucket load of great music totally missed because it had an alternative tag on it back then, Grunge came along as a tag and everything became listenable, timing thats all it was. You ask anyone that listed to JJ or JJJ in Sydney in 1990, you were considered well left of centre. Sunvolt, Guided By Voices, Died Pretty, Glide, Teenage Fanclub, Clouds checkout some of these bands you'll like it.
but the funny thing is that when they ask them about the songwriting, frank doesn't say a word about how he wrote all the material (so about the actual truth), just talk about "our stuff" "WE try to do like.." and all that. but egotistical, right.
No audio? I used Goldwave to record this and adjusted the channel mixer setting to blend the left and right channels and that solved the problem. I find that videos which were orginnaly recorded with a VCR and transferred to digital have a tendency to (compress?) the audio track to one channel only.
+Mad Mack "All songs written by Black Francis" (with the obvious couple of exceptions). That's how the credits are worded. Their songs were not the result of a team effort....notoriously so.
you're the joke. i've been listening to them almost 15 years. i have every album on cd and vinyl and have every single lyric commited to memory. i saw the pixies live and they were great. kim's voice was beautiful and so was her personality.
I saw a documentary called loudquietloud, its really interesting why they broke up actually, kim deal and charles thompson kept having problems, probably because they are the most genius, after that the drummer, david lovering pursued being a magician and medal detecting, really weird, joey santiago is probably the most normal out of all of them, has a wife and 2 kids last time i checked, then in 2004 the pixies got back together, after 12 years apart, and did tour that made them alot of money
@DickLodge68 Whether Santiago or Deal were over-rated, it truly narrows down to personal taste. Kim is NOT the best thing that ever happened to the bass guitar but it worked. Joey is NOT the best thing that happened to electric guitar but the textures he produced accented the songs in a way that, even though it sounded like he was killing his guitar, worked. Other than that, you're pretty much right except for the morphing part. I believe that charles knew what he was doing.
