This was David Bowie's favorite band in the latter part of his life. "Criminally underrated", he once said. They became good friends. Always referred to him as Charles or Chuck, never Frank or Black.
I imagined that Bowie referred to him as Charles, however I hoped he called him Francis , or Dear, or Dearest Francis. His cover of "Cactus" was excellent.

Charles just pulled off a subtle joke that very people would notice during the interview at 3.17 - she's asking if they have any weaknesses and Charles bends over and starts untying and tying his shoe laces - this is precisely what Salvador Dali did when he went to a meeting of the Situationists that infuriated them and got him kicked out of their group - if you look to the lyrical content of Debaser which is Dali-esque you may pick up the thread of his sense of humour here. Agreed. But it's a realistic phrase. Bands and influencers aren't required to "love" their fans. And its a hard thing for people to wrap their minds around. Their just regular people trying to make money and do what they enjoy

Between Pixies and the brilliant Frank Black solo, FB and the Catholics, The Breeders,as well as the new Pixies recording ..wow.. and thanks ! so much enjoyment over the years glad to have been along for the ride
One of the most influential bands of all time. And they still get close to no support in getting in to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It's been a trend with college radio/alt bands from the mid to late 80s. Sonic Youth, Husker Du, and The Replacements have all been on the final ballot at least once before. I'm rooting for Joy Division/New Order to get in on their first time. The world needs further proof that everything didn't start with Nirvana, or anything connected to Seattle. Or that the Early 90s wasn't really this moment of epiphany that the press and the less informed Gen-Xers with selective memories paint it out to be.
In reference to the Rock Hall , I'd add the Smiths, too. But getting those guys together in one single space might take an act of God. And a few restraining orders.
Joey says the whole point is fun. I have seen these guys in concert three amazing times. No performing musician appears to be having less fun than Joey Santiago. Maybe things changed or maybe that’s just his style.

The Pixies made incredibly fascinating, obscure, creative and refreshingly original music. The Pixies gave incredibly dull, awkward and boring interviews.
Not yet aware they will have a huge influence on the Seattle "grunge" (f*k I hate that word) music scene, especially some album called Nevermind, with all that quiet verse >> screaming chorus >> quiet >>LOUD>> etc. Also remember this was the era of the black&white jerky-blurry-grainy-cam video in sh*tty analog 4:3 resolution.
Frank Black Is a stage name which he used for his solo career after Pixies split up and Black Francis Is the one he used while in Pixies, his birth name is Charles Thompson and his bandmates calls him with his actual name ofc.
Frank Black (Charles) is such a brilliant song writer that was born to play music. A true genius. And I love how he doesn't give your typical answer of screw religion and spirituality is hilarious. When truth is, it's not so easily dismissed.. We are humans dealing with the human experience.. that's a handful in itself.

ytubeanon Am I the only one to find that Cobain's music has just nothing in the world to do with Pixies music ? I can't see any influence between those bands. And I can't see a single influence between Smells Like Teen Spirit and any Pixies song.
@sixpie Just because a band is influenced by other bands or artists doesn't mean they'll sound like them. A lot of times a band may take certain aspects of their influences' music and put it into the mix of their own style. The main influence Nirvana got from the Pixies was the big loud choruses and the quiet verses, also known as "loud quiet loud". Teen Spirit is a good example of this :)
Well, Pixies don't have many songs with loud choruses and quiet verses. I never understood the whole "loud/quiet/loud" idea when it comes to the Pixies. They have maybe a bunch of songs that sounds like that, but that's definitely not their style.
I love the pixies as much as I hate 'monkeys gone to heaven'...it's the worst song on Doolittle and over the last thirty years they've done little worse...bless em.
