Man, listening to Pizowell's early beginnings brings back memories. We were very similar in some regards. I had a HUGE VHS collection that I eventually completely replaced. I still have a few VHS tapes left though.

This is the type of stuff I love. Just talking about back in the days experiences etc. Some collector RU-vidrs are all about "look what I got, look what I got", and never really talk about movies and the times. You're channel is the best imo. Have a great wknd man ✌🏻

I remember seeing the VHS for Santa with Muscles, a Hulk Hogan movie that was in my local 20 auditorium movie theater for one day only, with a MSRP of $79.99 and thinking that was insane. Even at the time, I didn't want to pay $5 for it. This was in maybe 1997, so we weren't used to seeing those kinds of prices.

Great interview. I was a VERY late adopter of blu-ray because I'd only had hand-me-down CRT TVs for most of my adult life which were fine for VHS & DVD. It wasn't until 2016 that I had my first HDTV, a 1080i Sony Trinitron CRT from the early 2000s, another hand-me-down from a family member who'd graduated to plasma (that thing weighs a TON!) Even then, I didn't know how to use the HDMI cable until a few years later when my wife bought a blu-ray by accident thinking it was a DVD, so she bought used Samsung blu-ray player online because I was still convinced it was a marketing scam to get us to double dip on movie purchases. But when we watched that blu-ray, that's when I really noticed the benefits of HD. Since then, in the past 5 years, I've been going wild upgrading everything to blu-ray and also upgraded to a 70" 4K TV I got on clearance at Best Buy. At 45 yrs old, it was the first time in my life I'd ever paid for a new TV. Ha!

I knew Blu-ray would easily win that format war the minute it was announced that the PS3 was going to be a Blu-ray player, and then they did that 6 movie giveaway where everyone got Spider-Man 3 and then you got an order form to pick 5 more Blu-rays for free, like Chain Reaction and such. I picked the 5 most expensive selling eBay movies from that list and sold almost all of them because I needed it to help subsidize the cost of my PS3 at the time.

I remember my youngest memory as a child with movies (I was about 4 or 5 years old), was going into my parents room where they kept all of their vhs tapes lined up on the dresser. They had maybe 30 tapes at that time. Me and Dad would go in there to find a movie to watch and take it into the Living Room to watch. Among the tapes on that shelf were titles like Bloodsport, Kickboxer, and Children of The Corn. God, I miss those days. I could go on and on talking about this stuff.

Buying the E.T movie on VHS was an EVENT lol we got it at midnight day of release was so exciting to own a VHS tape when I was a kid. Fun fact - E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial* was released on VHS on October 27, 1988. The film was priced at $24.95, which was the lowest price at the time for a major movie, and became the best-selling videocassette ever.

remember video section in grocery stores. owned vhs, started collecting in the 90s, bunch of disney titles being born in the mid 80s. first dvd The Spy Who Loved Me in 1999. remember people complaining about black bars for the longest time.. didn't change to blu-ray till The Criterion Collection changed and I had collecting Criterions since 2000. its nice to still have old physical media releases. Pioneer's steelbook of Akira was one of the first movies i really remember hunting down hard.

I think the first US released DVD was Twister in March of '97. There were a bunch of reasonably priced sell through VHS I recall from the early 90s. These include Disney films like Little Mermaid, Beauty & the beast, Lion King, and Aladdin. Every kid had those back then. Also Die Hard 2, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Lethal Weapon 2, Jurassic Park, and Back to the future parts 2+3, and Terminator 2. I think most of those you could buy for 30 or less from places like Toys r us, Suncoast, tower records, etc.

Loved this. I do miss the local corner shops that rented VHS in the late 80s/90s- their horror selection was so much more diverse than Blockbuster, who took over and made everything so bland. I spent a small fortune renting NOES 3 and 4 in particular! Good times.

I must come to Twilight Time's defense here. The only release that was really messed up was "Night of the Living Dead", they didn't do new transfers they just worked with what they were given, so you can't really blame them exactly. And yes they were more expensive like $30, but not $50.

Great conversation CHH! Big fan of Piz. I worked at Suncoast from 2002-2005 while in college which was the heyday of Anchor Bay. Suncoast, Sam Goody and Musicland were all owned by the same company. No disrespect to Piz but he isn’t completely accurate about Twilight Time. Most of the releases were $29.99 and I bought a bunch of their titles and never had one issue. Their model was different they basically signed a deal up front with the studios for a set number so that’s why they were limited. The owner has since passed away but he did a great interview on Shock waves and Pure cinema podcast.
