I am only sorry that I can cast only 1 Like vote for this, for it is the magic of God gracing us with sheer beauty. Thank God, we at least have this record for history and our souls. Please... do not let it ever die, our youth of today... please.
@sugarbist (I've never heard Del Monaco and I've heard Domingo only at old age - often with mic-). Perhaps Mario was absolutly thrilling live (with his charming presence and strong, passionate voice) but in cd recordings he sound too melodramatic for my taste (except, perhaps, in 1959 Karajan cd). Domingo is closer to my vision of Otello carachter. But, of course, Del Monaco voice and presence is amazing and (though I disagree with his rendition) I understand why so many people loves him!
@LordoftheTrapdoors Domingo's lirico spinto voice could not compete vocally with Merli,Pertile,Martinelii,Zenatello, that's whyPDapproaches the role in a 1 dimensional way.I have heard both PD&MDMlive.Domingo in Paglacci was almost inaudible. He is always better behind a MICROPHONE.Del Monaco live, Is a phenomenal listeninig experience with full command of his vocals&great artistry .Yes,MDM did take liberties with the music,But always had the ability to thrill the public with his uniqueness.Enjoy
@LordoftheTrapdoors Yes I must agree.Del Monaco was very melodramatic& did sing over the top at times.Lets not forget that MDM started singing in the 1940s,so perhaps that time in history somehow influenced his interpretations.Enjoy
@LordoftheTrapdoors I cannot disagree with you more.Del Monaco had 4 different interpretations for Otello,1 for the U.S.& U.K1 for Italy 1 for Japan & continually refined them.MDM voice was more than well controlled& there are numerous examples of his nuance singing here on Y.T.Forza,Ballo,Carmen,O Paradiso,Cielo E Mar,Otello arias "Gia Nella Notte".His phrasing was impeccable and the voice was more formidable than PD's.Domingo must be suttle&nuanced as he cannot Compete vocally with MDM.Cont.
