Plane crash Virginia: Millionaire's family in onboard Cessna that set off DC sonic boom scare 

It does seem weird... perhaps the boom was from a missile blowing up the Cessna, and that's why they're so intent on convincing people it was a sonic boom -- it didn't sound like a sonic boom to me... and since they sent two F-16s, wouldn't there have been two sonic booms?

Maybe the boom was not cause by breaking the sound barrier. Amazing how quickly the sheep have swallowed this story without question after the last 8+ years of government and media lies.

I've certainly never left home in my car, gotten halfway to my destination, then realized I needed to make an emergency detour. I've never done that and I find it highly suspicious that anyone ever would. /s

Modern aircraft use a flight management system with GPS. You plug in a flight plan which includes your departure and destination airport; departure, enroute, and arrival; and an approach and missed approach to your destination. The plane will fly all of this automatically provided there isn’t a break in the route (which is called a discontinuity) right up to the missed approach point at the destination airport after which it will continue on in the same direction indefinitely. The plane can descend automatically too.. but that requires the pilot to move the altitude selector to a lower altitude as you can’t descend without a clearance.

Is it possible the “safe and effective” caused the pilot to lose control of cockpit causing plane to veer off course?

It’s called autopilot….the aircraft was on course to waypoint prior to descent. For whatever reason the pilot never woke up and the plane turned back to departure point

When I was a kid ,air travel was a roll of the dice. Many performers died in plane crashes. Their odds ran out. They were constantly flying and it was just a matter of time

Yes similar to the Payne's plane. They made a change to the "problem" directions (supposedly), to start with putting on O2 masks, instead of reading the trouble shoot issues first. I would have thought they would also have a sensor that monitored the Oxygen, since it is so important. Interested to see what changes were actually made and how is was missed.

We lived near Fort Bragg NC. Sonic booms often and we hardly noticed it happened so much. Did have a few cracks in some walls.

There have been videos of people in altitude chambers where they think they are fine, but clearly are not. You can see videos of it here on YT.

It does have a warning, assuming that the cabin pressurization altitude is set properly by the crew. Read about Helios Flight 522 in Wikipedia where an airliner crashed for that reason--crew error. Even if the warning goes off, the supplemental oxygen system for the cockpit crew has to be charged and operational. If that system fails, well, read about the Payne Stewart crash.

That had to do with base reductions at end of the Cold War, etc. I actually grew up near one of the pilots that day... he had told us very directly they were told to ram if needed, but they didn't catch up in time. A "down order" was indeed issued.

When the fuel runs out, systems will fail. The battery kicks in to power but would only last for minutes. The ACARS system ( Flight Tracker) will also fail to transmit and will broadcast the last activity of the aircraft. So the last broadcast was at 30,700ft.

So some small jets do indeed have "push one button" systems such that the plane will find the nearest airport, radio a mayday, talk with ATC and land all on its own. It just requires one thing: for someone to push the button!!! I do believe there are some planes where the pilot has to basically let the system know periodically, "Yep, I'm here" and if you don't, it automatically drops the plane to a low enough altitude where the passengers can recover, but it's an expensive system and older planes would have to be retrofitted to have it installed. Keep in mind that this is an incredibly rare event and most people simply aren't going to spend the money to add such a system in their plane. It would be like getting flood insurance, but you live in the Namib desert!

The sonic boom was from the F-16s out of a base near Atlantic City. The F-16s from closer bases didn't catch up to the aircraft until after it was leaving DC apparently.

They would have it was going to run out of gas and plummet into a large populated area. They assessed the Payne Stewart flight too, and were prepared to shoot it down if the fuel burn down trajectory were in a city area (not rural South Dakota). These pilots and passengers were long gone having died without oxygen and it wouldn't matter at that point.

The golfer Payne Stewart in 1999 had a very similar incident to this. A depressurization event caused eveyone to pass out and the aircraft continued on until it ran out of fuel.

Likely that was the next setting in the autopilot, so without pilot intervention, the plane went to the next step. That may have been the last setting to line up with the airport entry corridor for landing. Based on the flight to NY, the plane almost certainly ran out of fuel. You don't always completely fill the tanks, as that is wasteful to carry if you don't need it. So enough to get to NY and some extra for weather and delays, could result in the plane running out of fuel when it did.

Military aircraft rarely fly supersonic when they are low enough to affect the ground over populated areas. Not only can you break windows, but based on the audio, it sounds like an explosion.
