I was stationed at Norton AFB in California thru Jan 1973. In 1972 I had the privilege of joining Gen Olds and others at a table for drinks and socializing. The stories he told were not only remarkable, but true. An experience I will never forget. GOD bless you Gen Olds!
Love the story related about BGen. Olds by Ltc. Dan Hampton (Ret.) in Lords of the Sky. He told how then Colonel Olds was returning from a mission. He got to the tanker and after taking a little fuel he allowed his flight to take their fuel. When it was his turn the tanker pilot said that they had given their limit, retracted the boom and there was no fuel for him. After basically pleading to no avail and with only 3 minutes of fuel left he dropped back, told the tanker pilot that he had one sidewinder left and just before he punched out he was going to trigger it. The boom came down immediately.
23:00 has to be the most real wake up call I've ever seen on RU-vid. Really. There is nothing else that comes close or is as accurate as this is and it's over 20 years old already
A real gentleman! He started out flying piston aircraft in combat, and lived long enough to see a man walk on the moon, and the Berlin Wall to come down. His leadership in SE Asia saved many lives. He perfectly grasped the problem with political correctness.
You can tell this Man is a leader,, he oozes confidence and charisma,, what a warrior!! I would follow him to the Gates’s of Hell if he commanded me to do so!! Where are these Men in this generation?? Rest in power General Olds!! 🫡🫡🫡🫡❤️
Just got done listening to "Fighter Pilot'. Great book. Takes a bit of glamour off being a fighter pilot but that's well-deserved. Top-Gun without the varnish.
Meeting BGen Olds in 1987 (and Tex Hill) was definitely one of the high points of this young Security Policeman's career. Both men heroes by every conceivable measure.
it is a shame the world has lost people like Robin Olds a true hero and all around good guy a great sense of humor and a profound sense of what is right the world needs more men like him RIP sir.
Telling it as he saw it no b.s just straight facts and wasn't afraid to speak his mind great pilot and a man's man RIP Robin Olds you will be missed by all stay the course Bruce
Wow, I'd never heard the story about his jet-show partner 'Pappy' Hearst. I am so glad he shared that and someone was there to record it! Robin Olds you were awesome!
Gosh, I am the dumbest dumb ass around. All the reading that I have done on WWII and 'Nam, and I have never come across great gentle soul of a warrior. Just to have met him and shake his hand would have been the highest honor.
I disagree completely, you would need to give them something that they would willingly fight for and I don't think the current rabble in Washington are worth even one drop of blood from one of our kids. Robin Olds' generation were fighting for a just cause, there is no doubt about that, they were very lucky in that respect,Subsequent generations have been fighting for the corporate "rights of the U.S,U.K etc
but, heres the thing he did not realize at the time. All those brave men, everybody that went to Vietnam and sacrificed, dont ever think for a second that it was in vain, thats the reason why we North Americans are on top. Im from Canada, but its so obvious to me all that was the reason why were so advanced. if it didnt happen, we might not be able to go outside right now and know we are safe. God bless you guys, youre the reason we live in the best place in the whole world. The united states gets so much critisizim, but they in my view are the only reason why this world is still habitable. You cant make everyone happy, but we try for sure. anybody who talks shit about United States or Canada just wishes they could live here. and one more thing, I thought Obama was awesome. Im talking about everything he did as a president, but as a man.
True.. Very True 🤷.... Actually he needs a Netflix series to be honest...2 hours is nowhere enough to encompass his lifetime exploits and achievements.
This guy epitomized class. I read in his biography that he once hit on Judy Garland but she was stoned out of her mind. Called her a four letter word and went on to other ladies in the room
Famous US fighter pilot Hub Zemke told a story about P 47s strafing a train. What made it interesting is the fact that he was a passenger on the train at the time as a POW. The train was a mixed bag of woman, children, prisoners and guards. The carnage was obscene.
Who ever gave the thumbs down dont know history or a hero. The stories omg what a life see why fighter pilots get the hot girls see his wife. Wow sorry it ended bad for them
Question, at 7:33 Robin states that he landed back at March after the accident that killed Pappy and Pappy's Wife was there when he landed. According to the account of the accident Herbst's new wife witnessed the accident, as did his 13-year-old son Tommy. Both rushed to aid in the rescue, but Herbst died shortly after the accident in a nearby naval hospital. Anyone know more about this accident?
Yes sir!: I've only served under one USAF officer I'd follow unquestionably into the gates of hell..but they exist! Bgen Olds would be another! Rest. in peace Sir your fight is over.! I hope you are looking down(along with General Washington, chesty puller and others) on this nation and influencing it's Military commanders today!.
I hope he just wasn’t thinking when he said he didn’t care if Iraq’s chemical weapons were blown up as long as the resulting cloud blew in the direction of Israel before he said or Syria or Iran.
FlaLawdog , if you heard the complete answer he said that it wasn’t our war and wasting Americans in a conflict that has gone on for thousands of years and will keep going long after we’re gone is a waste of lives. He listed all countries in the area but didn’t prioritize them in any order, it’s just how they came out. He had spoken about this many times before. Thus was edited and when that happens it always sounds different to those who haven’t heard the whole interview or have heard it before. A warrior is the most disgusted by war of anyone, if you’ve never seen it you don’t understand how much it affects you. General Olds lost many friends and did his best to bring back every one of his men. Having had four commands I know he wasn’t thinking about the countries involved. A commanders most important mission is to bring back every one if his people to their families. The politicians are the ones who uphold countries that often don’t deserve it.
General Olds is a Combat Created American Badass.......Faults - sure........But.. who do you want as your Wingman or at your 6.. I'd take General Olds.............
People who don't serve are the only ones who wonder about things like that. When you trust your life to the soldier next to you, philosophy doesn't matter, ideology and politics doesn't matter.
