Another alternative for sharpening a 3-knife system is to have TWO sets from the same manufacturer and do them in pairs. You would just have 6 knives to sharpen each time but a spare set would be ready to go in the jointer as soon as the first set of three is dull. Just a thought.
I bought the system. I have a DeWalt 12". My blades are ground on different bevel than the jig. Only the outside edge touches the sandpaper. To get the same bevel as the jig it will take a lot of sandpaper.
This jig looks good for freshening up HSS edges between trips out to the sharpening service, which in itself is very valuable, both time and money. Could you comment candidly whether it would also be able to remove a couple nicks, say 1/16" deep, in a reasonable amount of time and with sub-herculean effort? Thanks.
Hi, I'm planning on getting one of these but you mentioned that the blades need to be the same width before sharpening. I gess this means I will have to get my blades all ground down to the same width first before using the sharpener.
A nice tutorial on the 3 blade sharpening, however one blade will always see ten more strokes of one of the grits as you move to finer grits... So, they won't be perfectly match ground. I guess it isn't a huge issue as long as you keep track of how they were ground from the last session or you are shaving off so little that it doesn't make a huge difference. So for example, let's label them knife 1 (K1), knife 2 (K2), knife 3 (K3). Now let's grind: K1 and K2 1st sanding ( ten strokes each), K1 removed and K3 placed in its stead. K2 and K3 sanding (twenty strokes now for K2 and ten strokes for K3). Grind K2 and K3 on finer grit now: K2 and K3 sanding (ten strokes each at finer grit), K2 removed now and replaced with K1 K1 and K3 sanding (ten strokes for K1 now and K3 sees total of 20 strokes). Move on to next grit.... and so on and so forth. As you can see, one blade always sees 20 strokes each grit whereas other two only see 10 strokes at each grit. Just explaining that it isn't a completely perfect setup for the 3 blade planers if you want them perfectly match ground.
do 1&2 @ten strokes, do 2&3 @ ten strokes, do 1&3@ten strokes all have 20 each do the same for each grit. if you 5 strokes each then all will get 10 strokes
