Ive used long shank hooks with flourocarbon leaders with success like you said its your choice, love the videos tight lines 🎣

Hi Heath, I tend to use a little heaver tackle. I would go with wire on a planer. Why lose tackle when you have a choice. say "Hi" to the Crew. Have fun and good luck, Mickey

Hi Mickey, couldn't have said it better myself. I'm just old school and have faith in what I believe I know about finding fish and I let the gear do its job. Hopefully I can outsmart the fish. Personally I'm not a fan of down riggers... they take up a rod holder, or have to be permanently mounted to your gunwale. I prefer the planer because it does the same thing in theory, yet is one less piece of equipment. However, when it comes to exploring different depths and finding fish the down rigger is a bit more precise and helpful in that aspect.

What about using lighter wire. I have caught king fish on 20 pound titanium wire. For Spanish mackerel go with 10 lb and it seems to work great.

For those rich people who swear by mono or floro, I would like to know the satisfying catch to gear loss ratio and the cost. I for one have no issue with tooth proof wire because that is what it was designed for. I get my fish and keep my gear. Not incubus it a cost factor, you don't want to be that guy who hooked a monster and for carelessness, it got away. I rather tell the story with me and the fish in the picture. As opposed to, it must have been 12 feet long and 1000 lbs.... Lol It's not just gear you lose, it's time, gas, ice, bait, and you lost most of your hook ups. It's a very expensive hobby. When younger home and have to account to the wife and experience the result of that, you will soon know which way to go next time... Lol
