Fighter Pilot Reacts to the "Dusty Gets Lost" scene in the Disney movie PLANES (2013). Looking for a military/espionage/terrorism thriller novel? Check out the SPECTRE SERIES. HTTPS://www.cwlemoine.com/books/
The sequel where the crop duster turns racer joins a hotshot crew is better than most of the drivel coming out of Hollywood these days. Actually a pretty cool flying and firefighting movie.
@@ALRinaldi to be fair if you're gonna turn any kinda plane into a firefighting plane, the one designed to drop liquids at low speeds accurately is a decent enough choice.
@@TerryTerius true that. What Intrigued the most about the game series is the engineering of the super weapons. Especially from AC5. Also the storyline.
Tears of the sun : "...this Sidewinder looks one inch thicker, than it should be!" Planes : "LSO... that's real... I don't know that they're forklifts, but... I'll allow it..." :-D
I know right! It's always referred to as "the boat". Its pretty fun to see the boat donkeys get irritated at aviation guys. Its even more fun on a small boy.
@@Rummyson 213 was one of the other squadrons on the boat when I deployed. Except they were VFA-213 and flew hornets. I wish I could have seen the Tomcats
Actually the director of this movie KLAY HALL went to the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier specially to understand that how things actually work on the aircraft carrier that's why maximum of the comms and carrier scenes were correct.
The original animation of Dusty, Ice, and Goose flying by the carrier had the jets on deck with wings extended. When it was pointed out to Exec Producer John Lassiter that all aircraft on deck would have their wings folded, he had the scene redone.
They might not get it right 100% of the time but heard other stories like this that when they make an effort to get something right they go to the source and learn it.
Pixar does have a history of really nailing details even when they don't have to. Another example a lot of people point out is the radio protocol during the flight sequence in The Incredibles. It's probaby one of the reasons for the great quality of Pixar movies.
People often forget that the folks who made Planes are actually avgeeks and put a lot of effort to stick realism into the movie where they could (without sacrificing on action, cartoonishness, and being too abstract for general people). It's one of my favourite movies!
There was a South Vietnam officer who was allowed to land his cesna on a carrier when he was escaping with his family. The wanted him to do a water landing and them be rescued, but they let him land when they learned he had his wife and kids with him.
During Vietnam when they were evacuating everybody a local stole a Cessna with his family and kids and he put it down on a boat so anything could happen
Yeah, it was a South Vietnamese Army Major. I remember from a video that the Captain ordered a few of the Hueys on the deck thrown off so that there would be enough room for the Cessna to land in the high winds.
You watch the dark channels? They just did a video on this a few days ago. Crazy story. Don't think you could ask for a dad or husband to do more lol. Stealing an airplane and landing on an aircraft carrier to save your family. Quite possibly one of he greatest stories ever
This was too cute. "Runways are NOT supposed to move." I will watch this whenever I want to smile just for fun.🙃 Might even watch the whole movie. Thanks Mover.👍😉
This video was just WHOLESOME for me. Watching an animated kids movie to be more accurate than traditional Hollywood ones, and Mover laughing over it is just Hilarious!
Fun fact, the engine sound of the antagonist Ripslinger is primarily the engine that Mike Patey has fitted in Scrappy (that engine mixed with one other that I can't remember at the moment)
I thought it was Goose and Iceman. They are voiced by Anthony Edwards and Val Kilmer so if they were going to choose one of Mav and Goose it woulda been Goose.
7:42....I love how for that brief second Mover's face was like: "Does not compute". Keep up the excellent work Mover! I am glad to see that you're willing to "play" with ANYTHING aviation and do it with just enough seriousness to be legit, but not so much that you destroy the image of the movie. My next request would be "Airplane" with Lloyd Bridges..since you were Commercial Airline Pilot for about five minutes! :)
1:37 "FAA is _not_ gonna be happy about that." 😂🤣 Also, fun fact: _Nimitz_-class Aircraft Carrier USS _Dwight D. Flynsenhower_ (CVN-81) (Yes, it's revealed on 5:23, but what I mean is that *a **_Nimitz_**-class have an 81st carrier which, IRL, goes for the **_Ford_**-class)*
I watched this with my son and whilst watching the extras they say about the producer or director being a real pilot and a few others on the team so they knew what all the talk should be and sound correct.. good film and the extras were worth the watch also! enjoyed your reaction Mover! :)
Aaaaaaaaaand we've officially reached the end of the internet... LOL Good Job Mover!! FWIW, the Producers presented several scenes at Oshkosh before the movie was released and they talked about their documentation process. They received solid reviews and feedback from all the pilots in attendance.
It's funny when Disney/Pixar movies go out of their way to get the little things right despite the fact its a cartoon about talking planes. I remember Incredibles has a similar scene.
I owned the DVD and there was behind the scene footage of the directors and other people who worked on the movie actually got to go on the carrier for some insight if if remember correctly.
Huh...Didnt see this coming or so. What a surprise that you're reacting to Planes. Only reason I watched this because of: Anthony Edwards and Val Klimer making a cameo appearance there as F-18s.
C'mon mover, you know you love the M18 Dromader. Where else do you still get to fly acrobatics for a living? 7:11 ripping the tail off: if the tailwheel caught the deck, then yes. Catching a cable I'm not so sold the plane would rip in two. Here locally they actually use an arrester made out of 1/2inch sampson weave nylon rope to allow the crop dusters to stop in an overshoot. Doesn't rip the tail off, but the pilot tends to eat the instruments. The local company that sprays the orchards use Dromaders, and the airframe is amazingly rugged, but a 120 gallon fuel cell and a short runway surrounded by trees doesn't allow for a go-around most times. The rope is all of about 3 inches off the dirt and the main gear just roll over it while the tail wheel catches the line. Each end of the rope is anchored with a 250lbs. concrete block. Not going to arrest a fighter for sure, and perhaps that's where you are going with that, but I'd imagine that the tail wheel probably wouldn't catch a 2inch arrester cable in the first place. Aaaaaaand, now you can bash me with a nerd stamp. Oh, and as far as speed. yeah, they are slow. They have an average flight speed of about 90KTS, and land around 70KTS. Not sure what that is as far as minimums or maximums in the jet world.
In One scene of this film, the old Corsair plane talks about his first and last mission during WWII,when he was the leader of a young squadron that see an enemy Japanese ship and thinks "oh!let's attack it!it's a lone ship!". Ignoring the fact that the ship in question was the Cars version of the IJN Yamato, they them discover that the entire fleet of Japan was there. And you wonder what ships had Japan in the Cars version of WWII? that's right: only Yamatos If in the real life both Yamato and Musashi (but more Yamato) were a serious problem for the US Navy, imagine a fleet of over 100 of them in the same angle of sea. Bold move for them to attack, with a bunch of Corsairs, that amount of firepower.
@@rubberwoody "it blew itself up" This sentence was wrong from the start, but this end bit definitely made you win the award "stupidest comment ever" Learn history, pal
@@rubberwoody still wrong. Its crew didn't blow the Yamato up,it was the plethora of bombs, rockets and torpedoes the USN launched at it during the Operation Ten-Go,you dork It's like, basic WW2 history
21000ft and they're literally no more than 1000ft msl. lol! Keep up the good work, Sir. I also work for RAAF, and happened to say "the boat" to some LCDRs and boy oh boy, were they mad
wasn't just the pilots that called it the boat, we all did, you might be out on liberty and tell your buddy, hey i gotta head back to the boat i have duty tomorrow, in formal conversations we called it a ship
It was fun watching you get excited at the moments where the writers got coms correct. At first it seemed like you were writing the suggestion off as a joke, but then gradually got more respect for it. Great reaction! :)
At the start of the video I thought Mover was about to tear this up a new one but I ended up being pleasantly surprised at the end. Hilarious that its got more realistic comms than a lot of serious military films.
Absolutely fantastic movies, my favorite. They clearly made the effort to get the aviation lingo and other parts right. For pilots, specially GA light airplane pilots these movies are an utter delight! Great escapism during these dark global times. Thanks for a great reaction vid Mover!!
Yes those were super hornets with the VF-103 Jolly Wrenchs. Planes are Bravo and Echo Voice by Val Kilmer in Anthony Edwards. If you look closely at the helmets you’ll see that one is Iceman‘s helmet from top gun and the other one has Mavericks helmet from top gun. You should review Planes Fire and Rescue.
Your tongue-in-cheek comments about the scene, well in Mover Ruins Movies" segments as a whole always has me laughing out loud, spitting food, drink, snot, Thanks Mover!
Gotta start talking good com early enough, to avoid any bad habits. By the time kids grow up and are able to get their pilots license, their com should be spot on... lol
When I was a young croppy I briefly worked with Dusty, the guy was ALWAYS getting lost so it does not surprise me they had to intercept. Last I heard he was last seen flying straight up into a mothership with some nut job screaming “I’M BACK”.
Hehe, it was charming hearing you approve the comm in a kids movie. Another animated fighter scene you might enjoy is from the 1993 movie Patlabor 2. If you search 'Wyvern Intercept' the first result is ideal. Take care!
The extras for the movie (in the Blu-Ray/DVD release or on Disney+) include a 15 minute film called "Klay's Flight Plan" featuring the director Klay Hall. John Lasseter is featured as the guy who came up with the idea. But they have Hall visiting the USS Carl Vinson, where he arrived on a C-2. A Hornet did a low-level flyby just for him. They also showed production footage to the XO and others. They noted that the wings would always be folded on the deck of a carrier unless it was landing or taking off. Lasseter actually approved redoing that footage. I don't really where I heard it (and it isn't in that documentary) but apparently they got the "We got you" from the LSOs on the Vinson and added that too.
Clay Hall, the director of Planes, actually went on an aircraft carrier during the production of the film. That’s where he got all the information on what happens in the comms and on the boat when aircraft land/take off on those carriers.
Mover, a civilian aircraft has indeed in the past been landed on an aircraft carrier, during the evacuation of South Vietnam the captain of the USS midway ordered a number of Hueys thrown over board to make room for an O-1 bird dog to land. It had a south Vietnamese airforce major, his wife and 5 kids onboard (pretty impressive for a 2 seat plane.......)
Apparently the Hornets were played by Val Kilmer and Anthony Edwards so we got Goose and Iceman on his wing. Also I've made a LOT of rider calls over my career. I was really surprised by the comms in this movie. lol
Mover, this is good stuff! Good comms’ also sold me on this! My grandson loves planes and wants to be a pilot and he loves this movie, so you may have further inspired him!
One thing they got *right* in Top Gun: Maverick was Maverick mentioning them pulling the cables for the barricade, but he wouldn't be making that call.
I love the Jolly Rogers, but I wanted to say that they have landed civilian planes in the past on carriers, they even pushed a helicopter overboard during the Saigon evacuation so a Cessna could land on it
