Perhaps you've seen tutorials on the Loomis Head. If you've got a wrap on that, then get ready to level up with the Asaro Head! In this head tutorial, we'll go over the importance of understanding the planes of the face, how it affects lighting, and why it's still important for stylized work like anime! Yes, believe it or not, it's true!
The Loomis Method is a simplified version great for getting down a quick lay-in, but the Asaro head will tell us all the information we know to make believable and detailed heads that more closely resemble true anatomy.
Follow along in this tutorial to learn how to draw better heads!

ABOUT ME:
I began learning how to draw in February, 2019. I was inspired by Into the Spider-Verse and told myself, "I want to be able to make something like that one day". SO I decided to pick up a pencil and start learning.
I've spent every day since scouring the internet for the best tutorials and lessons to help teach me how to be an artist.
But I don't have all day - I want to figure this out! I've structured my practice and learning in a way that has gotten me to figure out the fundamentals in 2 years - and I hope to have even less until working professionally.
Because of this, I sought out to make myself a curriculum that would train me effectively.
I called it "The Curriculum for the Solo Artist". It got popular on Reddit: / from_the_guy_who_made_...
Proko even talked about it on the Drafstmen podcast (time-stamped)!
• DIY Art School Part 2 ...
Since then, I've been working hard to improve. I take pride in learning, helping others, and pursuing creativity.
If you want to talk more with me, I'm on Discord all of the time.

@@moderndayjames With all due respect, that's the weirdest thing I've ever heard said about a legendary artist. his books are literally decades old, they can't be put up to current society's "standards", that's just silly. But none of his content was ever considered controversial or mean spirited. I have read all of his books and studied his lessons extensively for close to 20 years. I have to admit I'm not sure what you're even referencing, but having watched your videos in the past as well, I would have assumed you were intelligent enough to understand that just because certain things are "problematic" as you put it today, that doesn't make it historically so.

A mix of both Loomis and Asaro will provide good foundation for drawing heads. I often go back to the foundations a lot, and since I'm currently in school learning digital art I feel I've improved when studying the two heads.

Very useful, thank you :) been trying to look into asaro. Loomis definitely feels easier, but your exampl of Asaro being a sort of level up made it make sense. Like moving up a grade in school. I felt like I wasn’t ready to give upon the Loomis method, but Asaro was intriguing, so your idea to combine them until I’m used to seeing where shadows goes seems like a great idea. Thanks again :)

How have I never seen your videos before??? You’re so underrated 😭 Not only do you teach how to draw the asaro head, you’re telling us to start more simply and then build up to drawing more planes of the face. You help us start by using the loomis head, which we already know. I also love how you take time to explain how important it is to know how to draw the asaro head and to learn the proper structure of the human anatomy. Even if you don’t want to draw realistically, you can learn a lot from this video! Thank you!!! 🛐

The eye on the "simple side" is meant to be a closed eye, as artists must also learn how to draw faces with closed eyes. Asaro presents the planes of a closed eye to make clear a closed eye is not just a simple slit in a flat plane. Also, while it's nice to refer to images of the Asaro head online, I recommend that aspiring artists actually buy the physical Asaro head, a three dimensional plastic head one can place on one's table and light from different angles, etc.

hi, really love your informative video, is much more direct towards exercise and training. I wonder if I'm going for kinda semi realism art how many value range do I need?... I mean I got confused when I try to arrange them, this one for direct light, highlight, reflect light, this one for shadow, core shadow, then ambient light. etc ... And Is that if I go more toward realism, the more value range I need to add in order to make things closed to real object? Thank you.
@AlexHuneycutt
@AlexHuneycutt 3 года назад
Hello! You can use as wide a value range as you want. If you're thinking something like cartoon or anime, shadows are often just one value. But the more value you range you add, the more realistic the rendering becomes. However, the thing to catch here is that it does not mean your drawing has to be realistic subject matter. You can draw an anime face, or a cartoon, and still render it realistically with light, highlights, reflected light, etc. You can see this in Pixar movies, where the figures are not close to real life but still have amazing light details. To render more realistically, you will need to include those aspects of rendering (ambient occlusion and all the others). In the future I will do a tutorial on my process for rendering in greater detail, this video was more of an overview.

@ninja_tony
@ninja_tony 2 года назад
No. Just no. The Loomis method is not the only method to learning how to draw faces, and perhaps not the best either, but it's at least a valid one that is reliable and founded on anatomical accuracy. The asaro head is a complete joke that should have never gained this weird popularity it seems to suddenly be attracting. The asaro head is fundamentally inaccurate in multiple areas, and will teach inexperienced artists to draw planes that don't even exist on the human head. It could possibly be useful to more experienced artists, but then, they wouldn't need it in the first place.
