A video I made of the great movie Planes, Trains And Automobiles, starring Steve Martin and John Candy, from 1987. The music is from the film's soundtrack, and it's the vocal version of the song Power To Believe by The Dream Academy.
Movies aren't like this anymore. They made you laugh and made you cry at same time. I dont see anything like this nowdays. Well, this movie always remind me of my girlfriend, when she died long time ago. We were having a bad time when I watched this movie, then I realized how much I needed her. Oh well, like I was saying, I really liked this movie and actor cast were great. Both guys know how to really work in their characters.
Del is the voice for all us funny guys. 99% of the people believe that us funny guys don't have any problems in life and everything is good. Little do they know what we've really seen, what we really know and what we really believe. R.I.P John Candy. My hero
This movie, Planes, Trains and Automobiles is an absolute gem. Both Steve Martin and John Candy have never been better than in this film. It is very funny but at the same time tugs at your heart strings. The final scenes indicated to me that Neal and Del had developed a very close and enduring friendship and that Del had found a family which would really care about him. As I said, the film makes you laugh and it also brings tears to your eyes. A film which will last for many years to come.
I love this song. The first time I heard it obviously during the movie I was hooked to it. I believe it was during the motel room scene where Steve is just totally verbally abusing John. That scene alone by John had me in tears and continues to do so every time I watch it or hear the song by itself. A LOT can be learned from that scene about acceptance towards others and not being so viciously judgmental as we tend to be towards one another now a days. It's just an awesome song, and that scene was perfectly acted by John he is so deeply missed at least by me he is. I hope your resting peacefully John and may god bless you. And I sincerely thank you for the countless number of memories you left behind in this world of ours.
+tomtalker2000 Yeh totally agree - I think John stole the whole film with that scene, his reaction somehow summed up the message - that we should accept our differences and that we all have something to learn from others. Lovely film.
+tomtalker2000 I feel the exact same way! I haven't seen the movie and many years until last night. When the motel room scene came on with the song, I started tearing up too. That's why I had to look up the song today. Very touching scene.
The one that gets me is when steve martin realizes hes been such an ass hole to a guy who just kind of lost everything (no amount of time, let alone eight years, can mend the wound left from that) and he needed love
There were 4 of us in my immediate family, my parents & a sister. My mother rented ths on VHS and we all about died laughing the first time we watched it, and again and again. It became a family favorite. In July of 1990, we brought it with us on a 1,000 mile road trip to visit relatives. They loved it too. We would continue to watch it frequently into the 90's and still ocasionally after 2000. My mother passed away from cancer on January of 2010, I got away from watching movies in general for another several years. So in 2017, I watched Planes, Trains & Automobiles for the first time in about a decade. I still laughed hysterically, but the last 20 minutes hit me a little harder than I had thought. I ended it feeling depressed, but still glad I watched it. I think it has to do with the nostalgia from not having watched it in so long, and thinking about how we were all still together as one big healthy family the last time I had seen it. The mood of the music also amplifies it. Also, that night, I discovered that Dream Academy did this song and actually had a version with lyrics. It's not the happiest song out there, but it is warm and atmospheric. Before people think I'm putting the movie down, I acutally think I love it even more now than before, and I always will. You look at things differently as you get older. This movie brings back memories of the good ole' days, which are gone forever.
This was one of my dads favorite movies and he loved the music from it. As I grow into manhood, sneaking up on 30, I realize why. This song truly gives me chills. I always find this when I'm outside on my porch having a beer when theres a nice chill and I reflect on the lessons that man taught me in just enjoying real people and their art. Be it music or film.
In my opinion this is the greatest film ever made bar none. There aren't many you can watch time and time again and love it just as much the 100th time as you did the first. RIP JOHN CANDY JOHN HUGHES ☝🏻☝🏻
John Candy was a legend. Love the bit when the penny drops for Steve Martin. John Hughes was the master at putting profound moments into comedy. RIP the two Johns.
When Martin was on the train with his recollections and they kept talking about their wives and then there was that line about being home and Hal said I haven't been home for years - it all came together for me that woman was home - and he hadn't been there for years - I never cried so hard
I was 16 years old when this song was released. I am now 40 years old, but the emotion still remains. It's one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard.
A classic movie. A "sad/comedy" that can only be pulled off by two multi-talented genius comedian/actors such as Steve Martin and John Candy. RIP John. I know my little world misses you terribly.
John would have been 60 on October 31. I will never forget the day he died March 4, 1994 - at the gas station when the news came on the radio...one of the best.
I have to say also that no two actor/comedians could have carried this movie in the way in which Steve Martin and John Candy did. There should have been many accolades for this film and Steve Martin and John Candy but the critics etc really have no idea of what the public like in a movie. John Candy himself was a guy who it would be easy for anyone to love. In this movie, he shines bright as does Steve Martin.
I can't believe a film critic said at the time this film came out that it had a poor soundtrack! One of the best film soundtracks ever and used with great effect.
The last scene of the movie, where they are walking up the street to Neil's house and everytime you go away starts playing, I always break out in an ugly cry.
Still one of my fav movies ever, no matter how often I watch it, I always have to laugh with Steve when he gets his flash on the street, while the car burns down
I always like this song in this movie. Remember when John Candy took his socks off on the plane? Haha, He was naturally funny, nothing was rehearsed. Like Bill Cosby, you can be humorous without being vulgar. Thanks for posting.
"N-no! It's a figure of speech, it's just I'm on the road a lot, but yeah." Then at the end... "I, uhh... I don't have a home... Marie's been dead for eight years." It just kills you at the end to know he was lying about his tragic life. And it makes you love John Candy more and more... It hasn't been said enough! R.I.P. John Candy. We miss you, big guy!
To anyone watching this who is, let's say 25 and under, it was a truly sad day when John Candy died. I cried so hard. I was old enough to remember (I was 13) and no celebrity death has hit me as hard since. I had been saddened, but not terribly shocked. I had seen footage of his on ET just two weeks earlier, and he was ENORMOUS. Rest in Peace, John.
hey i agree ....it is sad that there are people out there...and there is nothing wrong with shedding a tear at something sad....nothing wrong with it my friend.
What a classic for our culture no longer knows how to make quality movies any longer. I'm even sad to know that John Candy his dead, but kudos goes to Steve Martin. FYI... I just realized that John Candy was in Cool Running. Movie.
Everytime this movie was on tv i watched it with my family,I ´ve got this movie on dvd and watch it from time to time. I love this movie and espacially the end where Neil takes Dal to his home, they become friends even if they are totally different.I liked Dal from the first moment. this movie is so heart-warming. John Candy and Steve Martin are brilliant actors. This is one of the best movies ever made. Nothing compared what´s coming out today.
Funny how critics miss the point. This movie is a high point in culture because it portrays love and decency with wit and warmth. I also like Uncle Buck and The Blues Brothers for much the same reason. Here in Australia the brilliant local creations Pizza, Housos and Swift and Shift are also overlooked or looked down on by the critics.
Saw this for the very 1st time last night. I remember the TV spots from back in 1987. Dang; why did it take me 23 years to finally see it? Ranks right up there with Midnight Run! Gave me a whole new appreciation for Mr. Candy - so moving. I downloaded this song, going to send it to a friend, and also order the Those Aren't Pillows Edition. Awesome montage -thanx!
This movie wears many masks. It makes you want to laugh, it makes you want to cry, maybe even makes you want to strangle someone. But I firmly believe that in terms to John Candy's memory, this movie is so dear because it called on talents and emotions that he hardly portrayed in any other film.
Years ago, I would have told you I preferred the instrumental. But now I really have been stirred by the lyrics of this song. This is my own take, but the main character in the song's mistake was becoming fixated with the power OF belief, but did not realize that the real power you possess is the power TO have faith. Once you do that, it's nearly unshakable. But if you rely on the power to move mountains and fail you become dispirited. The mountains to move are within.
Great movie John Candy R.I.P. - Date of Birth 31 October 1950, Toronto, Ontario, Canada - Date of Death 4 March 1994, Durango, Mexico (heart attack) - Height 6' 2½" (1.89 m) - John Candy is one of Canada's greatest, and funniest, character actors. His well-known role as the big hearted buffoon earned him classics in Uncle Buck (1989) and Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987). His career has handed him some dry spells, but Candy always rebounded.
Definitely agree with you about Phil Collins. The style & arrangement are very, _very_ similar, to the point I had to double-check whether he was list the composer. Cyndi Lauper’s mellower songs also took a lot of stylistic cues from Collins (not just True Colors), so I’m not surprised that you bring up the similarity.
Spoiler Alert! This song came when they parted company at the train station. Neil was remembering their past adventures and then recalled what Del had said about 'not been home in years.' Neil put two and two together and went back to the station to find Del sitting alone. Turns out Del's wife Marie was dead and he had no home to go to, so Neil decided to take him to his home.
Del: You wanna hurt me? Go right ahead if it makes you feel any better. I'm an easy target. Yeah, you're right, I talk too much. I also listen too much. I could be a cold-hearted cynic like you... but I don't like to hurt people's feelings. Well, you think what you want about me; I'm not changing. I like... I like me. My wife likes me. My customers like me. 'Cause I'm the real article. What you see is what you get.

"Del?" "Mmm... mmm?" "Why did you kiss my ear?" "Why are you holding my hand?" "Where's your other hand?" "Between two pillows." "... Those aren't pillows!" "ARRRRRRRGGH!!!!!"
"Well, Marie, once again my dear you are as right as rain. I am without a doubt the biggest pain in the butt that ever went down the pike. I meet someone who's company I really enjoy and what do I do? I go overboard. I smother the poor soul. I caused him more trouble than he has the right to. God, I got a big mouth. When am I ever going to wake up?"
Jessica, you did an excellent job with this video clip. Great song. Great transitions too. They don't make them like John Candy or John Hughes any more. Great men in their own right. Great movie as well.
