The Morning Lasted All Day: A Retrospective is a compilation album released by The Dream Academy in 2014. It is the band's second compilation album, following the Japan-only release of Somewhere in the Sun... Best of the Dream Academy in 2000. While the latter album was assembled without input from the band, The Morning Lasted All Day was compiled, annotated, and remastered by lead singer Nick Laird-Clowes. Of the album's 24 tracks, 6 were previously unreleased. These include the instrumental version of "Power to Believe" selected by John Hughes for use in Planes, Trains and Automobiles and "Sunrising", the first song recorded by the band since 1990. Also included are two songs ("Living in a War" and "The Chosen Few") featuring guitar by David Gilmour, who co-produced two of the band's three studio albums.

I meet someone whose company I really enjoy, and what do I do? I go overboard. I smother the poor soul. I cause him more trouble than he has a right to. God, I got a big mouth. My favourite film of all time; love John Hughes and John Candy, love this music, love the sentiment and moral messages of this film. Beneath what many see as a standard 80s comedy, there was an undercurrent of deep truths about humanity and our natures; through social comparison it highlights how many of us take our luck for granted and only see the bad parts of our journey and lives, when really we need to give thanks and gratitude. It also teaches us how when we are travelling, and strangers seem so distant, how if we just got to know people there are so many friends out there to find. Also, how nobody is perfect; Del Griffith with all of his flaws and bad habits appears a nuisance, but when you get to know him, is a kind and gentle soul in a rough brutal world. He's lost everything, he has no home, hes a widower to his beloved, he has confidence and self esteem issues, but he doesn't take his misfortunes out on others, like so many in his position may. He is benevolent in nature and sticks by his morals and values, and there is a very strong unbreakable character beneath his humble persona, that has been through so much and is still smiling. In the car alone, when it's snowing, he questions his self-worth which is tragic and upsetting, as it shows that even though he's strong, there is vulnerability in us all, but he doesn't let bad times break his positive spirit and cheer; hes almost like the spirit of thanksgiving, Buddha or Christmas embodied. It's a bit like John Coffey or Jesus; like the guiding spirit of virtue is embodied in an unlikely hero. Upon first viewing, Neil Page appears the 'normal' one as his cynicism is relatable to us but really he is the Grinch, and though he has everything you could wish for; beautiful wife and kids, lovely mansion and high-flying job - he is often grumpy, miserable, negative and selfish. He is slightly nihilistic and misanthropic and avoids people if possible. He looks over all the great stuff he has and only sees upward social comparisons; this highlights the workaholic, wall street type psychology of the 80s and many of us working people in the west. I find it humbling and beautiful how Neil with all of his success and money learns invaluable lessons from a homeless man; on the surface Del Griffith is an imbecilic comedy character to many viewers but deep down he is so wise. He is almost 'sent down' to help Neil, and I feel the soothing female vocals in this song 'Del's theme', create the imagery of a guiding spirit for Neil and their journey together that teaches him to appreciate what he has; thanksgiving - the undercurrent of the movie. Thank you John Hughes for your moral lessons to us all and to John Candy for your lovable self. RIP John Hughes and John Candy.

james sheldon Thanks for name dropping the synth brands. I'm trying to read up on old school synthesizes and which ones have what sound. And I agree, there's something oddly ethereal about those cold synth sounds. The name of the album this was from, "The Morning Lasted All Day," I always felt was appropriate because this seems like the kind of music that could score a cold early morning.

"You're not saint. You got a free cab. You got a free room. And someone who will listen to your boring stories! I mean, didn't you even notice on the plane when you started talking, eventually, I started reading _THE VOMIT BAG?_ Didn't that give you some sort of clue like, "Hey, maybe this guy's not enjoying it?" You know, everything is not an anecdote! You have to discriminate! You choose things that are funny, or mildly amusing, or interesting. You're a miracle! Your stories have _NONE OF THAT!_ They're not even amusing _ACCIDENTALLY!_ "Honey, I'd like you to meet Del Griffith! He's got some amusing anecdotes for you! Oh, and here's a gun so you can blow your brains out! You'll thank me for it!" I mean, I can tolerate any insurance seminar. For days, I could sit there and listen to them go on and on with a big smile on my face. They'd say "How can you stand it?!" And I'd say "Cause I've been with Del Griffith. I can take anything." And you know what they'd say? They'd say "I know what you mean, the "shower curtain ring guy"! WHOA!" It's like going on a date with a Chatty Cathy doll. I expect you to have a little string on your chest, you know where they pull out and have to snap back. Except I wouldn't pull it out and snap it back, _YOU WOULD! AGH! AGH! AGH! AGH!_ And by the way, you know when you're telling these little stories? Here's a good idea: _HAVE A POINT!_ It makes it so much more interesting for the listener!" "...You wanna hurt me? Go right ahead, if it makes you feel any better. I'm an easy target. Yeah, you're right. I talk too much. I also listen too much. I can be a cold-hearted cynic like you, but I don't like to hurt people's feelings. Well, you think what you want about me, I'm not changing. I like... I like me. My wife likes me. You just feel so sad for Del Griffith, and to an extent, John Candy himself. The poor guy just wanted to make people smile with his silly, and sometimes really dumb humor, but also... his infinite amount of optimism and warm hearted nature. I could say the same for his role in Uncle Buck where he went from a sleazy, uptown arrogant slob to a very well-grounded father figure for his nieces and nephew, especially Tia. That's why I've always loved John Candy, and I miss him to this very day... RIP John, Gone way too soon, but never to be forgotten...

A mix of sad & sweet there are signs of their imprint for years to come, trying to slowly in my own time, make my imprint on this home & world. My parents also loved this movie & John Candy & Steve Martin. John had this way of communicating his soul with his eyes that was genuine. I may have to have a therapeutic cry fest this weekend. John Hughes didn't have a huge filmography but what he lacked in quantity he made up for in quality. Classic movies like Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, and PTA. He struck the perfect tone with PTA great casting with Steve and John. It's one of those rare movies that can bring both the laughs and the feels. The scene where Del opens up about his past always gets to me. And right before with Neal, he's on his way home on the tram he's desperate to get home and yet...he still comes back for Del. Great character development from where he was in the beginning.

Very fine piece of music. And the movie is awesome, they rarely do those kinds of movies anymore. They were a very 80's/90's thing.
